lol he wasn't taking the air out of his tires folks, he was locking the hubs on his 4 wheel drive because he was afraid he didn't have traction enough to get out with just normal 2wd. manual locking hubs do just that, you have to turn the hubs to lock them so you can engage 4wd and get power to the front wheels.
+John Thompson Came here to say this. You can't take the air out of your tires just by taking the valve caps off...which is apparently what the lady thought he was doing. Not many people keep a valve stem tool in their pocket.
I remember this day, was my day off and I turned on the tv to hear the news about how certain parts had flash flooding coming through... almost couldnt believe it, since Toowoomba is on top of a range and it just seemed very unusual to me at the time.
Several people died in this event and I am disgusted that the full truth of what happened has never come out - so here it is: About 3 km upstream from the town centre is a large flood retention basin - located just to the south of the Golf Course. Ironically, this structure is designed to protect the town from flash flooding, by holding back floodwaters and letting them release at an acceptable rate through a set of pipes. Unfortunately, this structure had a design fault in that the rim of the wall was not fully protected by concrete. Probably nobody ever thought that the wall could be topped. However, on the day in question, the rainfall was so intense that the wall was topped, and from that moment onward, a 30 metre section started to collapse and erode away. All in all, the erosion cut away about a metre from the top of the wall, so you could imagine that it would have released a torrent of water some 30 metres wide and 1 metre deep. You can sort of see the effect when watching the video. For quite a while, the water is filling the channel, but not bursting the banks too badly. This is because the outlet pipes in the retention basin would be sized to the downstream channel such that they release water as quickly as possible - but not too quickly to exceed the capacity of the channel. Then, suddenly the water level starts to rise quite rapidly - to what looks to be around 30 metres wide and an extra 1 metre deep - this would be when the wall was over-topped. I checked out the scene a week after all this had happened and someone had already been in there with a loader 'patching the breach up'. It seemed a bit suspect, like they were trying to hide what had happened. Anyway, I took a set of photos of the situation and sent them in to the authorities, with a description of what I thought had happened, but nothing was ever said about this. I'm not saying that if the wall had not collapsed, peoples' lives would have been saved, but they certainly would have had a better chance. In any event, I think that the full truth should always be told where people have lost loved ones. I note that NOW the flood retention basin DOES have a concrete cap (a footpath) all the way along the rim.
That little bridge took that like a champ. very little debris in the water, logs and stuff. but then again this is in a city and not much forestation around. We had a flood here and tho the flow wasn't as fast as this the rise where significant and there where logs and forest debris being swept with he water so they had to bring excavators up on the low bridges to lift up the debris since the pressure builds up immensely. But we lost a few roads and buildings just because of that.
HIIL ExoticboyzTV I find it funny he bothered holding an umbrella while letting the air out his tires like a baller lol. Seriously though, why wouldn't anyone try to move their cars once they realized what was happening?
SImply amazing video! Can't believe the guy with the 4x4 is the only vehicle owner who attempts to gets his car out. Also the scene at the end is almost artistic in its expression of the power of water. Dramatic stuff!
ok to all the people who think this guy is letting air out of his tyres, first of all LMFAO, secondly, has anyone ever heard of a hub lock? google it, then sit back and laugh at yourselves with me.
+charlesl7 my car is 200.000, and I would have moved it as soon as the river get out.... People are so fucking stupid they never learn what happens (I bet this has already happened dozens of times at this spot)
I do engineering talks for students in Canada/US and show them this for rainfall-runoff. 160mm of rain doesn't sound like a lot until they see your video. Thanks again!
The other thing about this summer was that the ground literally felt sponge like even a few weeks before this happened, i lived Hume,South street way back in toowoomba 2011. So much rain before and this just pushed it over the edge.
3 Years ago. :'( I will never forget this day. It didn't seem real, but I'm proud to say that I helped with the clean up. R.I.P. To all of those people that lost their lives. :'(
Oh my god. 9 years today. That flood was absolutely no good. We were coming back from a old friends house and we were on the Warrego highway and the company with intent launcher was telling mum to get off the road and she wouldn’t listen witch was stupid and then the company with intent launcher phoned my granddad and then he phoned my mum and he said get off the road in a firm voice and we stopped at the last hotel at Helidon and we were with no power and food for 3 days and I nearly died and it was absolutely trumatising and when someone talks about it I feel sooooo trumitised.
what fantastic footage! scary stuff but thank you so much for posting this its really helped me with my a level case studies on flooding! thank you! and hope your car was okay!
Great presence of mind to film this event. I understand the laughter was nervous laughter, you weren't making fun of other people's losses. It's just bizarre watching cars float along in that way.
For those thinking it was a dam breach or dam related, or climate change related: Australia was experiencing a La Niña weather event, and a large quantity of rain fell in this creek's catchment in a very short period of time.
I am very sad to see what has happened in Australia. May God be with those who have lost so terribly and who have suffered so much. I hope every one of you family and friends are well and unharmed. God bless
This was a terrible disaster that occured however it taught me that it doesn't matter how bad things are, we as a country pulled together as 1 to help. To help rescue those in risky situations, gather together to mourn the loss of those who didn't make it through, to help clean up, rebuild... that was amazing. Those who we lost in this tragic disaster will always be in our hearts, we will move forward and always be there for each other remembering those who have left us.
That dude who let the air out of his tires in the 4x4 is smart! Cause if u let are out if tires it makes them dagger which makes them heavier so u have more grip. Art dude!
We have some of the worst floods in the world. Always the Australian spirit shines through these tough times. Last year my cousins house was completely wreaked from the Queensland floods :/
Well I was so impressed this man this one man risked being swept away in that merciless torrent to save his vehicle the brilliant touch he also took an umbrella FOFL if that isn't defiance in the face of the odds I don't know what is.Kudoes to you sir whoever you are.
So sad, so many people, including children died in this flood. It was tragic and captured the hearts of all Australians :( rest in peace to those lost in this horrible act of mother nature
Oh my gosh. 10 years today. I almost got bloody killed coming back from Brisbane with my mum and sister. I thought the exact same parts of Queensland would have exactly the same flood disaster from the 7th of January to today but it didn’t thank heavens. Please subscribe to my RUclips channel please. From Jordan’s car reviews.
What's unbelievable is that Toowoomba isn't located near any major rivers or oceans, it's 1200 ft above sea level and the water came from no where. Kudos to mother nature.
I remember this event. Honestly I have never seen so much water. 2008 there was a bit but nothing compared to how extreme this was. Even 2013, it was close but still not more
Wow... I don't know whether to give a thumbs up for the great video... or thumbs down for all of the destruction... great video though, : ). Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "flash mob"....
My office is ~500m from this spot. It had been raining for ~2 weeks beforehand, and the heavy rain came through about 1:30pm, water was up within 15-20 min, and would have been back within the banks of the drain by 3-3:30. The torrent you see here is usually a concrete drain about a metre wide, in the centre of a grassy ditch. The whole catchment upstream from here is either suburbia or the eastern side of Tba CBD. Lots of rooves, road and driveway to create a sudden runoff in a downpour.
Yeah I feel so sorry for the owners of those cars that got washed away in that flood I hope your car was safe mate like you said it was parked out the front
the QLD floods was a terrible thing. took the lives of my cousin&aunt, Jordan and Donna Rice. r.i.p to them and whoever else lost their lives in the 2011 floods..
I watched this video repeatedly three years ago, then made a Relief contribution. What I'd like to know is, have you made [or would you please make] a follow-up showing the current condition of this area?
@gyoungins321 don't judge the person who took the video because seriously we didn't know what was happening, phones were down, we just knew what we could see and we were, scared, shocked and absolutely in awe of what was happening. The entire town has grieved for those we lost on 10/01 and they live in everyone here who knew them and those who have just heard their stories. Jordan was an exceptional person and as a community we are very proud of him.

+blitzv10 ....he wasnt letting the air out of his tires.
+- Jeff - but everybody has got a key in their pocket... and your usual car key will just do fine.
+blitzv10 where did you actually SEE air going out of his tires ?
"Fortunately the rain has stopped" I think the damage is done, love.
I disagree. Had the rain not stopped, the damage would be BIGGER. No ?
I remember this day, was my day off and I turned on the tv to hear the news about how certain parts had flash flooding coming through... almost couldnt believe it, since Toowoomba is on top of a range and it just seemed very unusual to me at the time.
this is why i drive a boat to work
+Dogg9 how do you know that...
of course not because you're poor
Very smart lol 😂
I visited this town about 8 years ago--what a wonderful place. This makes me sad. I hope everyone's recovering now.
i wonder if someone woke up with a bunch of free cars in his backyard
hehe why not if you're living in a river :D
Actually theres no river in toowoomba its on top of a mountain.
+Brandon Poirier-Blair Prices all are Half Off
+Brandon Poirier-Blair Omg I was Thinking that xD thnx so much for sayin it :3 I did see a car in our school when i was 7
Brandon Poirier-Blair lol
Can’t believe this was 9 years ago today still get goosebumps thinking about it
This video is by far the best footage of how quickly things escalated!!!
"this car might have been saved by being pushed up"
"i dont think you would call that saved, maggie"
lol
10 years today since this video was released.
Looked to me like he was putting his hubs in for the 4WD.
Yeah all that 30 seconds of locking the hubs in
Yeah I was gonna say taking air out takes for ever and it doesn’t look like he slashed his tyres ahaha
I remember seeing the 2011 qld floods on the news as a kid I didn’t understand how bad it was until I grew up
the 2022 ones were way worse
He's not taking the air out of his tires, he was locking his hubs. You can't let much air out of your tires when you spend 3 seconds on each wheel.
cut the tire

@Jeff Stacy even if true, that's one too many
My heart goes out to the 35 people who died in this flood :'( Much love from Auckland, NZ
I’ve driven through this city and I can say that the flooded river is at least 35 feet deep. Imagine how much water there was
It was 3 years ago today.
It's hard to believe so much time has passed already, but we'll never forget that rain.
We watched this in school and everybody was like ohhhh and aww and where angry at the man who was saving his car 😂😂
This is my hometown and I remember that happening
Same
I was in range ville at the time near the water bird habitat, luckily we didn't get flooded. My grandparents weren't so lucky.
Michael Lyons Oh was your grandparents okay?
+Jack KaiserCapewell yeah, the floor on their bottom floor in their house got ruined though. The office was down there and some of the computers died.
Michael Lyons oh dear, that sucks ass

in some area's during this flood the water rose by 20 feet in a matter of minutes.
Well in most if it makes more sense
Magnus Bekkengen there would’ve the flood water was about 30m deep
William Stokes no most reached about 62 foot
That bridge has been around for ages. It still stands.
Amazing video, I can't believe how calm those two sounded!
He's locking the hubs in, not taking air out
I find it funny how only one guy went out to move his car lol
That guy, had 4 wheel drive. The only thing that gave him any chance.
HELLO!?
HIIL ExoticboyzTV I find it funny he bothered holding an umbrella while letting the air out his tires like a baller lol.
Seriously though, why wouldn't anyone try to move their cars once they realized what was happening?
When Mother Nature throws up...
He wasn't airing down he was locking his hubs mate! Haha.
i remember the floods cause in from toowoomba
Fair Dinkum Good it was not just toowoomba it was also in the locker valley which is around the toowoomba area
It flooded a little in Bundy too
I live 20 minutes from Toowoomba and our backyard was a pool and the park in town had more water in it than the pool.
I live in Toowoomba but I was a baby when it happened so I didn't see it
I use to live in Dalby which is 1 hour away from toowoomba i was 6 when the floods happened
rest in peace for every single person who died that day
Miss Anonvexs it was over about two weeks
WeatherStruckGaming I was 3 on that day and I thought somebody made a GIAGANTIC pool In our yard
WeatherStruckGaming sorry I will remove it for you 👍
I know this is old but, next day on craigslist "For Sale: Low miles. Slight water damage, left the window open one night."
SImply amazing video! Can't believe the guy with the 4x4 is the only vehicle owner who attempts to gets his car out. Also the scene at the end is almost artistic in its expression of the power of water. Dramatic stuff!
"Should we move our cars?"
Stands there and does nothing.
Wow
ok to all the people who think this guy is letting air out of his tyres, first of all LMFAO, secondly, has anyone ever heard of a hub lock? google it, then sit back and laugh at yourselves with me.

Great presence of mind to film this event. I understand the laughter was nervous laughter, you weren't making fun of other people's losses. It's just bizarre watching cars float along in that way.
The only reason why I put a thumbs down is because the cars got flooded away and cars are worth a lot of money

I don't want to 'like' this video because of all the destruction and loss. But it is amazing.
Any time the weather service issues a “flash flood warning,” they need to remind people what that means by showing this video!

"So what did you do yesterday?" "not much, just enjoyed watching cars float down our creek :)"
I remember this event. Honestly I have never seen so much water. 2008 there was a bit but nothing compared to how extreme this was. Even 2013, it was close but still not more
you've never driven a Subaru. Very lovable cars. They very quickly become part of the family once you own one.
holycrap i just watched this on the tv
There are some videos out there which genuinely make you scared and others which just give you a fright....
Wow... I don't know whether to give a thumbs up for the great video... or thumbs down for all of the destruction... great video though, : ). Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "flash mob"....
I'm still amazed how i drive down this road almost every day. It's scary and strange that this happened is my town.

that was amazing. I am speechless.
