Ricky Compton No one's ever asked and I'm surprised it's never come up. I notice it every single day and my daughter holds her pencil the same exact way. It's something I've always done.
Finally a video where someone shows the real process. Jon do you ever get creative blocks? If so how do you resolve them and keep up your creativity? Would love if you responded to this! Your work is incredible man keep it up!
Josh Diaz Yeah I definitely get creative blocks...the problem is that as a working professional, you can't really afford to have them (or at least for too long.) I always try to keep my work fresh and interesting, but when I get caught in a creative block, I go back to styles and techniques I feel most comfortable with. The stuff I can do in my sleep, ya know? As soon as I start working (even if I find it boring or played out), it gets my brain back into the creative mindset and I eventually start realizing how to get back to doing something I feel good about. It's kind of like a brain exercise. Sometimes you can't just go off an idea, sometimes you need to push through it and just get comfortable thinking that way before you can do something new and exciting again. And thank you!
I know exactly what you mean. Thank you so much for the detailed response, it's so appreciated. I'll definitely keep this in mind in the future. Keep up your great work man.
I had/have a bad experience with the skillshare class. I found out that I never got any feedback from instructors. Sometimes it would take a while to get feedback from others/classmates. Another thing that I found out about skillshare is that first to post get all the 'thumbs up' whether or not the projects were strong. Be smart, save the time and money. You'll get more feedback in a classroom or showing work to designers in person.
Hey nice tips & thanks for sharing... I am using coreldraw for all my vector graphics designs should i have to learn illustrator too cause i have pretty much grip on CorelDraw...I don,t know designing software to stick with & which is better...
John, In your live trace setting you should add the check box "Ignore White". Then you don't have to get rid of all the white manually and have a nice outline.
fkylw Thanks, but I leave the white in because sometimes I change my mind about whether I want the color to drop out or not. Sometimes you don't realize you need a fill color until you're actually playing with it in Illustrator.
there a 2 things you did in illy that i've got know how to do...... first the settings in livetrace? i can't for the life of me get a great trace like that. second, when working with the squares on top of the banner (you called them hooks, where they hang from the horizontal pole) how did you select those objects and they automatically spaced themselves apart?
+Tim Pratt Auto trace. Search for it in the help menu, selecting "line art" usually works good. 2nd, the align buttons. Once again, you can search for them in the help menu.
Trollimus Prime thank you! yeah after watching some more and just playing around with the interface i figured it out. been using illy for like a decade and have never used align buttons. that will now change lol.
Hey, Jon! Thank you for the great video! I've been thinking about doing something similar to what you're doing - Designing something by hand, putting it in Illustrator then print screening it to a fabric. I noticed you're using your mouse to design. I do too! I've also noticed some designers use tablets to Illustrate. I thought to myself, "Should I be using it too?" What's your thought on that? Is it easier? Better? Thanks much!
FWIW, Jon said he's shifted to a more digital approach using iPad Pro now. Not sure that he does it all on iPad or also uses pencil/ink. (via his podcast nosecast.com)
I've been thinking about careers and thought that maybe I could be a graphic designer. Maybe you could give me some tips and pointers on where I should start. Also I'm 13 and don't know practically anything about this career.
I highly suggest checking out tons of tutorials on graphic design and start working on it to get a feel for it. I know exactly how you feel, when I was thirteen I really liked expressing through design and art but never really knew much about anything. RUclips is a great tool for learning about pretty much anything, make good use of it, you're at a great age to become great at anything you want. Good luck!
+Jovasaurus Rex thanks for the advice. I've learned a decent amount now about this career, such as the tools I need need, a basic idea of how to kinda do it, and a few other things.
***** Haha, yeah. My daughter went on a nail painting spree a few days prior and that stuff is a lot harder to get off than I thought. I wish it had something to do with a design trick or some fantastic cause that I could share. Just being a dad and having lingering dad stuff.
+Priya Pulikkal It's actually never the same. I change them all the time based on the look I'm going for. I just set it to "preview" and adjust from there. I already set it up for this video to save time, but really it's all about experimenting.
This is the difference between a real designer who knows his craft and all those people who claim to be designers stealing other people´s work and where you can´t see their hand or style.
The only way you can have an established online identity is by having your very own website. Therefore, you invest and hire web developers and graphic designers for the job. However, a creative web design is not always a big factor in your online identity.
I am not a hater. I create things myself. And I always question the process of creating stuff. But I think that the process you do is more of coping others work and change it a little. At least in what I see in this video. In some cases like the scull and the bird you copied completely. And I sometimes find myself in this position and then have to make sure to draw the line between getting inspiration and coping art. I know, sometimes we look for styles and what not. I think with the internet our imagination starts to leave our brain. We look way more at others work then finding ourself in wandering our mind to find something creative.
walkingonwater Not sure where I copied anything. The skull and bird I copied...from another original design that I drew as part of the overall brand narrative. The whole point is to repeat a theme that I designed for the brand so that it would be recognizable to the brand's customers and act as repeating icons throughout the story of Past Lives. I know it's a long video, but make sure you watch the whole thing and pay attention before making bold claims like that.
Eres una de las razones por las que decidí ser un ilustrador, grande Jon!
Awesome little bit of inspiration before bed. Love Jons Style!

Has anyone ever asked you about the funky way you hold your pencil? It's quite an odd grip....
Love the video!
Ricky Compton No one's ever asked and I'm surprised it's never come up. I notice it every single day and my daughter holds her pencil the same exact way. It's something I've always done.

Jon Contino Yeah, I paused, wrote this then started watching again. I saw why you did it and felt like an idiot for posting. Never again!
fkylw Haha, that's basically everything I write on the internet.
Jon Contino Hello, Jon. Thank you for this video! Say, please, your trace settings? If it is not a secret.
Really liked it, but I didnt understand how he keeps that hand made borders to everything, even in Illustrator his work looks made with the pen.

Great video. From curiosity, is there a story behind the pink fingernails at 10:12?
***** Haha, yeah. My daughter went on a nail painting spree a few days prior and that stuff is a lot harder to get off than I thought. I wish it had something to do with a design trick or some fantastic cause that I could share. Just being a dad and having lingering dad stuff.
+Jon Contino Don't be embarrassed about it. It shows you're a great father
Thank you!!!

very cool bro... (y)

Inspiring. I should spend some time doing this kind of stuff instead of DIY.
Look up Aaron Draplin.
You sound more Boston than Matt Damon.

Jon Contino Oh. I missed that the skull and Bird thing already was something you did.
Jon Contino the skull and bird is his own design?! You killed it brother, keep doing what you're doin! so sick seeing how this came together.
