I got the privilege of performing this piece for my senior recital and got nothing but rave reviews on it. I highly recommend getting this piece for any solo percussion performance.
I rarely leave comments but i was so impressed and inspired I must compliment your performance and this composition. I am I high school Instrumental Music teacher working on a remote learning lesson for my percussion to watch as we work on our timpani unit. I know they will appreciate and be motivated by this video. Bravo and thank you!
Wow Sandra, thank you so much for the comment! Very nice of you to say, and I hope your students enjoy learning about the Timpani!! It's a pretty awesome instrument :)
Jarryd after watching this performance over and over again for the last 8 yrs... it still blows me away! Thank you from 1 old Tympanist to another for sharing!!!👌
I'm really liking those raw super saw wave synth bass sounds with lots of delay! And a nice soft airy PAD further into it. I'm also hearing this deep bass pluck sound, too (part of the intro). Nice light show to help excite and accentuate things. And fantastic playing of the timpani. I always enjoy percussion compositions as well writing them, too. I've incorporated timpani in electronic dance music, which was a lot of fun!
I'm gonna be playing this for my senior recital. The theme for my recital is beauty created from the most average, everyday things. Superhero movies are everywhere nowadays, especially when it comes to the MCU, and it's to the point where a lot of people take their presence for granted. Yet, these apparently run-of-the-mill films can inspire such a beautiful piece as this. Even the concept of a comic book superhero, (something that has existed for over 100 years and is now ingrained in our pop culture to the point of feeling average and unsurprising), is such an amazing and gorgeous idea once you stop to think about it. It might be a bit of a stretch, but I think this piece fits quite well for my recital, and I can't wait to do it justice. Goddammit with your weird stick crossings though lol
WOW! Very impressive! The mix of modern electronic music with timpani is something that I never would've thought of! Very creative and outstanding performance! You seemed very much into what you were playing! I find it sad that things like this doesn't have a lot of attantion on youtube... You have my hat! Once again, good job!
Hero's Journey is not just another technical etude. I really enjoy listening to this jazzy instrumental tune! There is no better arrangement to legitimize the timps as a solo instrument.
I'm super excited to perform this for my recital this semester, and on my senior recital also! It's such a fun song to play, my teacher loves it also :) Nice work Jarryd
Hi Courtney, thanks for the kind words! It means so much that you are putting it on not one, but TWO recitals! That's so awesome- thank you, thank you :-)
fantastic! (unfortunately i haven't room for any timps, [and i have neighbours!] but hoping to get some electronic drums and already dabble with electronic composition! this has inspired me to do more!)
Hi Robert! I started practicing the timpani in High School, when I decided I wanted to pursue music with a percussion focus. I've fallen out of it now, since I have switched to composing (mainly for film and television)
The lighting scheme was only done for the music video, so my apologies there. However, a percussionist named Chase Banks performed this piece on his senior recital at FSU, and he programed his own lights! Feel free to contact him at chh.banks@gmail.com if you want to get in touch about this, I'm sure he has some thoughts to share on it :-)
This is by far the most entertaining timpani solo I've heard. We need more solos like this. Absolutely incredible performance!

Hello fellow timpanist here and I was wondering If I could make a few technique inquiries I wish to improve my playing
+D Seidens (blacksilk) Hi! Thanks for reaching out. Feel free to email me at jarryd.elias@gmail.com with any questions!
How long have you been playing the timpani
Hi Robert! I started practicing the timpani in High School, when I decided I wanted to pursue music with a percussion focus. I've fallen out of it now, since I have switched to composing (mainly for film and television)
Oh cool my names Claire and do have any advice for me because I'm 13 and in chorus and I need advice
Oh, hi Claire! What do you need advice on? Feel free to email me at jarryd.elias@gmail.com, if that would make things easier!
What movies inspired you for this piece?
Honestly, just superhero movies in general! I love the action and adventure of them. It also helped that a Spider-Man movie came out that year :)
do you have sheet music for this, I would love to play this
Hello! If you hop over to the "shop" section of my website (jarrydeliasmusic.com) you can buy the music there. Thanks!
Awsome piece! What kind of mallets did you use? Thank you
Hi Anda! I used Herbert 1s and 8s. Thank you for the kind words!
Does this piece come with the way to program the lights?
The lighting scheme was only done for the music video, so my apologies there. However, a percussionist named Chase Banks performed this piece on his senior recital at FSU, and he programed his own lights! Feel free to contact him at chh.banks@gmail.com if you want to get in touch about this, I'm sure he has some thoughts to share on it :-)
What microphone do you use?
Hi Blake! I had actually borrowed a couple of zooms from the school!
Nice performance! :)
Which mallets are you using?
Hello Sancha! I am using the David Herbert's 1s and 6s, from JG Percussion.
Thanks for the kind words!
