Full version of Ike and Tina Turner on Hollywood Palace in 1968. Features Sammy Davis Jr. They perform "You Got What You Wanted" & "We Need an Understanding".
I know right? I was thinking the same thing. I really liked it though. Rap wasn't new like everyone thought it was. It came from the roots he was singing it in....JAZZ, and religious chants
"Rap" is not really a new thing. "Rap" literally just means a talk or a speech, but long before hip hop it often referred to a rhymed and/or rhythmic speech. You can see Muhammed Ali pulling that stuff off in interviews and press conferences, and it was a big thing in "blaxploitation" movies of the 70's. What happened in the Bronx in the mid- to late 70's was that during dance parties - at which a DJ would play old funk records, preferably with a good ear for the best breaks and loop them - an MC (Master of Concert) would introduce the DJ, often in the form of a rap, *just like Sammy Davis Jr. is doing here.* In other words, a rhymed rhythmic presentation - a *rap* - was already a long established form of expression when hip hop got started.
Besides the incredible vocals, Tina was in charge of the dance routines too, and worked with the Ikettes to put them together. These were very hard working ladies who took their responsibilities seriously. Notice how great they looked; the act was beyond exciting but never cheap. There is a difference. It already was evident at this point Tina would become one of the greatest stars in show business.
+Wayne Brasler all talented and energetic and hard working.. but clichéd by this point.. and the songs here just plain awful. Tina is talented beyond measure... Ike is a punk. What are you gonna do .?
No he means trite and too much of the same, whereas someone like Diana Ross had the luxury of doing many different music styles and getting accolades for it. Tina did blues a la BBKing and rock. She really wasn't a soul music singer persay
5:50- 5:55 Sammy looked at Tina like damn how the hell she do that??? He was shook! 😂😂😂😂. Sammy was looking like he was ready to risk it all for Tina but damn Ike was standing there with his eye on him😂😂😂
I love the rawness and power of Tina's voice. Even though her voice is clearly female she has the edge of a male singer. You can just feel all the grit!
Nobody, and I mean nobly brings the thunder like Tina Turner. She puts so much heart and soul into her music its almost threatening, but in a good way. Just brilliant
Two of the Ikettes here remained with the revue, off and on, right up to the end, particularly Esther Jones, in the shortest wig on the right. Lejune Richardson can also be seen in many clips from the 70's in a blonde wig. She was also backup to Tina for many years of Tina's solo career.
Yooo. I keep on coming back to watch this over and over again. I don't even know what to say. Just amazing! From the beginning of Tina and the iketts, to the way she sang the first song. Tina was a bad mama. Tina Turner and James Brown are the best performers in history! I put that on everything.
I love this performance, this performance has really made me like the song We Need An Understanding and sammy was hilarious throughout this whole thing lol
Sammy rapping. I & T Review was AMAZING! And it’s still amazing to see. I hated learning what went on in their lives but appreciate with my whole heart & soul their performances.
Wow...just amazing Tina Turner moving and singing like that. Just give me chills!!! I can see how you inspired Beyoncé, Jill Scott and Keshia Cole.#loveit
Of course better than Beyonce. Beyonce learned everything from Tina. She has said that Tina is someone she idolized. Even down to the dancers and how they are synchronized. She pick the right person to follow.
zoezanj right lol people act like Beyoncé just arose out of nowhere knowing what she knows. No she worked hard and learned from the greatest. Also when you realize Beyoncé has been apart of many many tributes including Tina’s and Micheal’s , which also all loved her as much as she loves them!
I'm here for Tina after watching her farewell documentary at 81 years old, she's been one of favorite artist since the 80's I love her style and love for music, she is so talented.
