I grow potatoes last year like this! The best part is digging them out on harvest day! Digging for gold

    • @Painted_Owl

When is harvest day? How do you know, or do you just keep going until you’re tired of waiting?

    • @moorefamilyfields
      @moorefamilyfields Год назад +24

@@Painted_Owl you can tell visually. The plant will look sick and die back. You can start harvest then but I stop watering it and wait several more days to 1 week depending on the weather before harvesting!

I know it sounds weird but try growing them in washed-up seaweed! You don't need to dig a hole or anything just put a layer of seaweed on the ground then the potatoes and then more seaweed on top!

We Asian eat rice, so I save my 50 pounds rice bags to grow potatoes. I harvest a lots of potatoes.
First, I rolled the bags down 2/3 of the bags. When the plants grew I rolled the bags up, added in more dirt. More roots more tubers, more potatoes.
In Fall when the plants die down. Put the bags into the wheel barrel, cut the bags from top to bottom to harvest the potatoes. Dump the dirt into the garden, sort the potatoes and eat. Fresh potatoes are so good!

I did it once to prove a point to my 16YO son. We had a potato grow roots in the pantry and he was confused as to what was happening. I told him that it was a plant and it was trying to grow. He didn't believe me! 🤣
So I grew the potato out on the back patio. We got about eight small potatoes out of that little plant when we harvested. 😁

Do not place your potatoes 🥔 with onions 🧅 as it’ll help it grow roots. Onions produce a high level of ethylene gas, which will cause potatoes to ripen - and go bad - before you're ready to use them. However, those spuds aren't completely innocent, either; potatoes' high moisture content can cause onions to liquefy and leak.

My aunt used to use the kids old swimming pools. She had her husband drill a few holes in the bottom, threw in some straw, emptied a bag of soil on top. Place the potatoes in. And had another bag of soil on top. As they grow, just add more soil. When you're ready to harvest just dump over the pool. No digging. I like the laundry basket idea better. Much easier to deal with.

I threw cantaloupe rinds and seeds in our compost a couple months ago. Opened it up a month later and had probably 50, 60 cantaloupe seedlings. I dug out 6 and transplanted them, but next time into the compost and I must have about 80 6 inch cantaloupe plants, sturdier and with more leaves than the ones I actually planted in the sun! I guess my compost is good quality and ready to use in the garden, just as soon as I figure out what to do with all these cantaloupe plants!

Yesss!!! I’m growing some now! I put the entire potatoes uncut In a large plastic tree pot. The ones when u buy a tree you remove it from the pot to be planted… well I recycled that one and now it’s a potato garden. One month down and two more to go before I get to pull my potato surprises up! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

If it's anybody's first time growing potatoes in their yard... Get ready to find new potato plants popping up on their own for the next few years.

So, my sister-in-law discovered potatoes growing in some of the empty lots in her subdivision. Turns out, long before any houses were built, the area was a huge potato farm! There were so many, she got some neighbors to help her harvest them, and everybody shared the bounty

When I was in grade 4 (1990) composting was pretty new where I’m from so my teacher asked me to start a compost as makeup for being a poor student. We accidentally grew new potatoes in the compost but never consumed them

I do this often. Seed potatoes are expensive! I just spent $7.99 to buy 6 seed potatoes of Russian banana. I felt lucky tho. I got 7 taters in the box 😅
But I save about 20 seed potatoes each year from the ones before and I also grow out any store bought ones that sprout and go bonkers.
I'm quite addicted to the mini potatoes that you find in the store. They end up being almost invasive as I cant always find every one whilst harvesting and get plenty of volunteers 😊

Yes. We do it every year in Romania. But we do it in a big garden. That is a great idea. You eat what you grow. It's more healthy. You can do it with any potatoes, is not necessary to be rotten. Just that the process of growing is longer👍🏻

When I was a kid, we planted something called a tomatoe-potatoe plant. The tomato end didn't do too well, but underneath we had some darling potatos to lift!
