2 million homes in Britain had been destroyed before you came. But you had the money and the men needed.

@@richardduplessis1090 gotta give USA some credit, its hard to convince voters to go to war against a world power an ocean away that had conquered all of Europe. Not even the Brits stood against the Nazis until they absolutely felt that they had to, that’s why appeasement was so big. When they showed up though, the Americans were instrumental on the Western Front

@@Jasper-vr2zv I fully agree with your points. The strength of Germany is fully illustrated by the casualties and destruction inflicted on Russia, which in modern terms wouild be tantamount to a nuclear wasteland. 26m dead and every city raised to the ground.

@@richardduplessis1090 26m is sadly a conservative figure. Some put it close to 40m dead soviets 😔

@@smoaky123 I understand the higher allged death toll to be largely attributable to the sluaghter of their own soldiers by the NKVD. This was first alleged in the 90's. How true it is, I can't be sure.

Americans shipped out with their WW1 helmets, then switched before North Africa combat started. Also started Pacific Theater with WW1 Springfield rifles, then switched to M1 Garand as Pacific war heated up. Yanks is not offensive. Just short for Yankee. Just like Nip. It's short for Nipponese. What's offensive is people making claims when they're ignorant of the culture of the time.

I mostly hear the bad connotation comes from the southerners using it to insult the northerners. I think that's why it spread elsewhere.

    • @Pocoentertainmentstudio

It technically was offensive during the revolution but now it’s just a nickname for our people

    • @loganstroganoff1284

@RoseNZieg we southerners don't use it as an insult, we use it as a catch all term for ppl north of the Mason Dixon Line. Now when Yankees move to or visit the south and lament how things are different from back home we might refer to them as damn Yankees but generally it's just a benign term.

After watching this video, I wonder if my late grandfather was part of that first arrival of American Troops. I found out he had enlisted in the U.S. Army in October of 1941 at Fort Benjamin Harrison army base in Indianapolis.

The M1 Steel Pot wasn’t in widespread use at the start of the war. A lot of units, most notably those in the Philippines and the Pacific, still had the older Brodie helmets from WW1.
