    Napoleon Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - Once he meets Josephine though, both Napoleon the man and the movie change, for a tone that can only be described as humorous. The epic war film takes on some Big Lebowski hues, as Napoleon, convinced of his righteousness and peace-loving ways, delivers some epic one-liners and zingers, including calling the dinner on his plate a lamb chop of destiny. Thankfully unlike Scott’s last film House Of Gucci, no actor in the House of Bonaparte has a fake French accent - Joaquin Phoenix sounds American, Vanessa Kirby British, and they just make it work, allowing us to focus on the many many things happening in the screenplay rather than how r and ts are being enunciated. The film’s screenplay moves on from being largely episodic thus far once it begins to become clear that Napoleon and Josephine's toxic romantic relationship and how that shaped Europe as we now know it, might be what the filmmaker is most interested in exploring. In a fit of rage, Napoleon makes Josephine apologize for taking a lover in his absence, making her teradully declare that Napoleon alone is the most important man in the world. Almost immediately after they make up, seemingly only a few moments later Josephine, now not fearful at all, turns the tables on him, as he breaks down and repeats after HER that he is only a brute and nothing without her in his life. With the new layer of acidity in their relationship, Napoleon turns even more insolent, falling asleep in political meetings, being chided for his bad manners, literally running away from policy makers, just about falling short of pulling faces and going phhhbbbttt at army generals.
    How much of this is historically accurate, Ridley Scott clearly doesn’t care. The man is shooting Gladiator 2 with Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal right now.

    Thanks for mentioning how movies like these often offer zero character development to women characters. I'm just so bored of movies which don't even pass the Bechdel test. I'm yet to watch this movie and I hope it isn't as bad as Oppenheimer or The Batman or some of the other "good movies™" which are even worse offenders. Like, it's 2023. Write better characters.

      what is wrong in watching full male lead movie? Not every movie should pass the Bechdel test, which by the way is not the right way to evaluate a movie. Please look at the limitations of it.
      also, I love "little women" , so should I cry about "the missing men' in the movie.
      Let Nolan make his kind of movie and Greta Gerwig hers

    • @gaudaddy
      @gaudaddy 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@shailendra9564 of course nothing's wrong with a full male cast. And I know how the Bechdel Test is a very simplistic, incomplete, and frankly, bad way to look at a movie. In no way do I want anyone to make movies specifically for that test. That being said, I do think (and you'll probably agree with me on this) that a movie fails to reach its full potential when it has badly written female characters. I'm not asking filmmakers to make films that pass the Bechdel Test, I'm asking filmmakers to make better films.

      But somehow Barbie forgetting the basic movie rule of "show, dont tell" in almost the entire second half should be appreciated? If only IdPol fans could develop the humility to see the benefit of self doubt. But, sadly IdPol has become an avenue for virtue signalling by the rich and elite, so cant be expecting humility there. 🤷‍♂️

I think that the movie would have worked much better if they had edited out all the battle scenes and instead focused on his personal life or edited out his love life and concentrated on his military career along with the battle scenes because it all happened too fast the way this movie was presented in this shorter version. Ridley shouldn't be allowed to make historical movies anymore. This movie was hastened too quickly during the story telling, the relationships, and the development of the main character. Not to mention that Phoenix at 49 is playing Napoleon from the transition of a teenager and onto his 20s, which made no sense until much later on at the end. Even the lack of Napoleon's character direction, his behavior and education throughout the years, accents being over and under played, understanding and evolvement from Ridley has made Phoenix limited in his performance.

Personally, I don’t know why anyone would take a life as intriguing as Napoleon’s and relegate it to the background of a fictional love story, but at least be honest about it. Thought it was a terrific film.The best living critic Peter Bradshaw himself has given the film 5 stars. Vanessa Kirby has said she felt empowered playing a strong female part like Josephine and it's hilarious that some virtue signalling clowns (ahem!) are telling people the opposite. It is the director's vision and not a historical doc. Plus history is often misconstrued and extremely subjective. If he wants to portray a flawed version of the Emperor it's his choice. And believe me the woke and toxic feminism is the worst disease that has perpetrated in modern times.

    I saw the movie today. I would give it a 6. It was worth seeing in the theaters but it has a LOT of flaws. It ended up being a Napoleon highlight film. The last media on Napoleon was a mini-series and they did a good job. The problem with doing a movie is it HAS TO BE targeted. Dino Delaurantis 1970 Waterloo is the gold standard. Pre-CGI, 15,000 extras, solid attention to the history and Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer as Wellington is exceptional.
    Everything in this movie was highlights and what I thought they would get wrong they did a good job on and everything I thought they would get right they screwed up to the point I had to ask if it was alternate history.
    Example of what they did a good job on: The relationship between Josephine and Napoleon they did an very good job on. They mentioned but didn't get too into why he called her Rose.
    Example of what they screwed up badly: The Battle of Waterloo seemed like someone took a version of a Total War Napoleon they played and presented it as history. I was so WTF that I walked out of the theater to go to the bathroom because it was so historically inaccurate.

    • @freeedward8
      @freeedward8 10 месяцев назад

      Scott's NAPOLEON is a great masterpiece. I agree with the NEW YORK TIMES: "“Napoleon” is consistently surprising partly because it doesn’t conform to the conventions of mainstream historical epics, which is especially true of its startling, adamantly unromanticized title character. (The movie also doesn’t always conform to the historical record, and some may take issue with the portrayal of the Battle of Austerlitz.) In the early scenes, Napoleon seems to be another of Phoenix’s taciturn, unnervingly volatile, enigmatically damaged, violent men. The difference is that this Napoleon, with his bloat, scowls and consuming needs, often resembles nothing as much as an angrily petulant baby, one whose cruelty and pathological vanity make the horror he unleashes unnervingly familiar." A MUST SEE MOTION PICTURE!
