Napoleon Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - Once he meets Josephine though, both Napoleon the man and the movie change, for a tone that can only be described as humorous. The epic war film takes on some Big Lebowski hues, as Napoleon, convinced of his righteousness and peace-loving ways, delivers some epic one-liners and zingers, including calling the dinner on his plate a lamb chop of destiny. Thankfully unlike Scott’s last film House Of Gucci, no actor in the House of Bonaparte has a fake French accent - Joaquin Phoenix sounds American, Vanessa Kirby British, and they just make it work, allowing us to focus on the many many things happening in the screenplay rather than how r and ts are being enunciated. The film’s screenplay moves on from being largely episodic thus far once it begins to become clear that Napoleon and Josephine's toxic romantic relationship and how that shaped Europe as we now know it, might be what the filmmaker is most interested in exploring. In a fit of rage, Napoleon makes Josephine apologize for taking a lover in his absence, making her teradully declare that Napoleon alone is the most important man in the world. Almost immediately after they make up, seemingly only a few moments later Josephine, now not fearful at all, turns the tables on him, as he breaks down and repeats after HER that he is only a brute and nothing without her in his life. With the new layer of acidity in their relationship, Napoleon turns even more insolent, falling asleep in political meetings, being chided for his bad manners, literally running away from policy makers, just about falling short of pulling faces and going phhhbbbttt at army generals.
How much of this is historically accurate, Ridley Scott clearly doesn’t care. The man is shooting Gladiator 2 with Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal right now.

Thanks for mentioning how movies like these often offer zero character development to women characters. I'm just so bored of movies which don't even pass the Bechdel test. I'm yet to watch this movie and I hope it isn't as bad as Oppenheimer or The Batman or some of the other "good movies™" which are even worse offenders. Like, it's 2023. Write better characters.
for real. Both Scott and Scorcese are from a different time, and only ONE of them got the memo ki its 2023.
You should wait for Sofia Coppolla's eventual Josephime biopic
what is wrong in watching full male lead movie? Not every movie should pass the Bechdel test, which by the way is not the right way to evaluate a movie. Please look at the limitations of it.
also, I love "little women" , so should I cry about "the missing men' in the movie.
Let Nolan make his kind of movie and Greta Gerwig hers
@@shailendra9564 of course nothing's wrong with a full male cast. And I know how the Bechdel Test is a very simplistic, incomplete, and frankly, bad way to look at a movie. In no way do I want anyone to make movies specifically for that test. That being said, I do think (and you'll probably agree with me on this) that a movie fails to reach its full potential when it has badly written female characters. I'm not asking filmmakers to make films that pass the Bechdel Test, I'm asking filmmakers to make better films.
But somehow Barbie forgetting the basic movie rule of "show, dont tell" in almost the entire second half should be appreciated? If only IdPol fans could develop the humility to see the benefit of self doubt. But, sadly IdPol has become an avenue for virtue signalling by the rich and elite, so cant be expecting humility there. 🤷♂️
Who are waiting for animal review from her 😂😂

Who else is waiting for Sucharita’s Animal review. IYKYK
This is one of the freshest takes on Napoleon out there. Thanks Sucharita.
Waiting for Animal review 😁
Animal review please 😅😅
Vaneesa kirby as princess margaret in the crown, has been the most beautiful portrayal i have seen in a long time.. I wonder how British actors are so immaculate and precise and immensely talented in their acting skills..
wil have to watch it just fr her and ofcourse joaquin ..
I have been keeping an eye out for Vanessa Kirby ever since I saw her in the movie “ the world to come” not known to many. She is truly a phenomenal actor!
Loved her in The Crown :-)
She was brilliant in 'pieces of a woman' !
When Marie Antoinette was executed and while leading the attack on the Seige of Tulon, Napoleon was 24. However, Joaquin did not look anywhere near 24 in those scenes.
Animal released ....😂
Waiting for ur ANIMAL review😢😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Very good thoughtful insightful review. Loved it and learned a lot from your analysis, thanks🎉😊
The movie could have been better if it was not just about Napoleon's obsession over Josephine. Napoleon is known for his wars, his strategies, his reforms. Wish it touched those topics too!
Wait for the directors cut
I agree. But I think Hollywood only is interested in Napoleon's love life, which is a shame...
Wrong! Josephine was as important, if not more, to him than his army and France
@@ArthurKnight1899 There's much more to Napoleon's life and legacy than some love letters and his relationships with woman, which is the only thing that fascinates the filmmakers for some reason... I think that the movie would have worked much better if they had edited out all the battle scenes and instead focused on his personal life or edited out his love life and concentrated on his military career along with the battle scenes because it all happened too fast the way this movie was presented in this shorter version. Not to mention the lack of knowledge that ruined this movie...
@@alcottdevalte7440 I agree! It was too chaotic and poorly done.
Animal movie will be your nightmare, u should not watch😅
Animal review please 😂
cutest most adorable reviewer there can be. I have never watched a film before seeing your review since 2021 and I am proud of it.
what a super articulate and enjoyable roundup.
DD please react to Animal. I really want to listen to your review of the movie. While watching the movie, I kept on wondering what would be your take on this movie
Excellent in depth review, as for the historical accuracy of the movie I don’t know what Ridley Scott was smoking there are some clever decisions like the letters which napoleon did send but the movie was boring only offering a semblance of depth in its last moments
I don't like hollywood historical movies but I like history 😂
@@raja-jl9os I also like history and I am also French, i don’t know wat they were smoking on set but damn
Such an insightful review!! I would love to hear your views on the show 'The Railway Men' as well!!
Thank you !
I may not always watch the movie, but I will always watch your review, Sucharita! As panoramic as the silver screen itself ❤
so kind Nandita. Thank you!

Ridley shouldn't be allowed to make historical movies anymore. This movie was hastened too quickly during the story telling, the relationships, and the development of the main character. Not to mention that Phoenix at 49 is playing Napoleon from the transition of a teenager and onto his 20s, which made no sense until much later on at the end. Even the lack of Napoleon's character direction, his behavior and education throughout the years, accents being over and under played, understanding and evolvement from Ridley has made Phoenix limited in his performance.
He is directing Gladiator 2 😂
@@ChetanPatil-zc4ex I know, and he would be directing several other movies within the next year as well. A shame that we don't have any good filmmakers anymore besides a very few ..
Only if it was more about Napoleon & French Empire rather than Napoleon and Josephine, it would be a good watch..
Good to hear so many fancy and new English words in the review... I watched the whole video and still can't figure out whether you liked the film or not! :/
Mostly hollywood movie boring hoti h 1 time watch hoti h
Ridley Scott is what Spielberg isn't, the same way Coldplay is what Radiohead is not.
Perfectly put
Should be the top comment
Review Animalllllll
I don't know if its just me, but, I found the movie very choppy.. I get it, Napoleon's life story cannot be captured in a single movie but, hmm.. Maybe a series would have worked out better, the director would have had time to explore more, smooth out the transitions better, maybe..
Okay, saying this again, you are cute and I'll subscribe you after all. :) Also, love how you never give the rating on a scale of 1 to 10 and yet get me hooked every time you say that :) More power to you!
I just wish Scott would be upfront about the liberties he takes with historical figures. Personally, I don’t know why anyone would take a life as intriguing as Napoleon’s and relegate it to the background of a fictional love story, but at least be honest about it. And don’t throw a fit when people point it out
Hey sucharita!! Pls do review Jeo Baby's (the great indian kitchen) new film 'kaathal - the core'. It takes on the theme of homosexuality and handles it with such sensitivity and tenderness. And importantly, its helmed by a superstar, Mammootty, which gives it a lot of reach amongst general masses. Really looking forward to your take
Please review "Three of us".
I'd like to see less of applying 21st century standards to 19th century France by calling him a war-monger so many times. For all his faults, he built the first nation state with a law code which is the basis of all modern states.
The most detailed review! and the “….some inept global heads of state that it might remind you of…” waah waah waah!! I am high fiving remotely to that !
Thanks for watching!!

Animal review kb 😂
This movie was like " Good fellas", so badly directed that I didn't know what to make of it.
Phoenix is the worst Napoleon in any Napoleon movie. Any one of his characters sound and behave and react exactly the same. A waste of time.

Review animal !!!!!
The second wave comes out of the... trenches at the battle of Austerlitz... Napoleon leads (???) a cavalry charge at Borodino. Ridley Scott's Napoleon: where 1917 meets the charge of the Rohirrim (Lord of the Rings) and where a series of silly and historically inaccurate vignettes is served up as a some sort of a "vision". You were not there either Ridley Scott nor have you read much on the subject.
Review was great but keep it spoiler free.
Sucharitaa, review toh sahi hai but how pretty is the jacket! Where can I get it from?
Just found it on amazon ya
A slamdunk of a dumpster fire--one of truly Napoleonic Proportions! Ridley Scott's greatest attempt at utterly hysterical historic revisionism! His career-penultimate Waterloo.

When left wing feminists describe the movie 😂
Do you want the films to be a close depiction of history or politically correct? How do you expect feminism in 1800
Thought it was a terrific film. The best living critic Peter Bradshaw himself has given the film 5 stars. Vanessa Kirby has said she felt empowered playing a strong female part like Josephine and it's hilarious that some virtue signalling clowns (ahem!) are telling people the opposite. It is the director's vision and not a historical doc. Plus history is often misconstrued and extremely subjective. If he wants to portray a flawed version of the Emperor it's his choice. And believe me the woke and toxic feminism is the worst disease that has perpetrated in modern times.

I saw the movie today. I would give it a 6. It was worth seeing in the theaters but it has a LOT of flaws. It ended up being a Napoleon highlight film. The last media on Napoleon was a mini-series and they did a good job. The problem with doing a movie is it HAS TO BE targeted. Dino Delaurantis 1970 Waterloo is the gold standard. Pre-CGI, 15,000 extras, solid attention to the history and Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer as Wellington is exceptional.
Everything in this movie was highlights and what I thought they would get wrong they did a good job on and everything I thought they would get right they screwed up to the point I had to ask if it was alternate history.
Example of what they did a good job on: The relationship between Josephine and Napoleon they did an very good job on. They mentioned but didn't get too into why he called her Rose.
Example of what they screwed up badly: The Battle of Waterloo seemed like someone took a version of a Total War Napoleon they played and presented it as history. I was so WTF that I walked out of the theater to go to the bathroom because it was so historically inaccurate.
Scott's NAPOLEON is a great masterpiece. I agree with the NEW YORK TIMES: "“Napoleon” is consistently surprising partly because it doesn’t conform to the conventions of mainstream historical epics, which is especially true of its startling, adamantly unromanticized title character. (The movie also doesn’t always conform to the historical record, and some may take issue with the portrayal of the Battle of Austerlitz.) In the early scenes, Napoleon seems to be another of Phoenix’s taciturn, unnervingly volatile, enigmatically damaged, violent men. The difference is that this Napoleon, with his bloat, scowls and consuming needs, often resembles nothing as much as an angrily petulant baby, one whose cruelty and pathological vanity make the horror he unleashes unnervingly familiar." A MUST SEE MOTION PICTURE!
Calling all Feminists to gather their arsenal for Animal Bollywood movie!! 🫡
