  • Alice Howell was a silent comedy star at Universal Pictures in the 1920's.
Alice Howell appeared in vaudeville in New York and on the road before moving to California to begin a film career with her friend from vaudeville, Mack Sennett. Early reviews of her movies describe her as the scream of the screen. One reviewer likened her to a "sort of Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., and Max Linder." All of this was compressed into "one more or less diminutive package of femininity." She was sometimes called "the girl Charlie Chaplin." she worked for Mack Sennett and later L-KO Kompany and her early comedies were often produced by Universal Pictures.
It's raining heavily, but at first the young husband and wife are not concerned about it. But the husband gets soaked on the way home from work, and then finds that the butler has left all of his suits hanging outside in the rain. Next, when some friends come to visit, they find that their troubles with water are just beginning.

Neely Edwards and Bert Roach seems to have been a comedy team from 1923 to 1925, making some 50 shorts together. Alice Howell joined them for the last 20 or so.
I liked this one. No big laughs, but a lot of smiles and chuckles.

At 3:22 it shows gas at 13 cents a gallon, equivalent to $1.98 in October 2020.
