What are you talking about.i asked to see instinstallation on a rod iron screen door and I did not see no video for such thing I saw the video on time but shares
Great security door installation Allen! We don't have many here in Michigan. We typically install storm doors, to help keep the cold air out! Thanks again !
I find it is helpful for future re-installs to fill the old screw holes with a oak wood dowel with wood glue so if by chance you need to drill next to an old hole you have solid wood for that screw hole. This also ensures that any moisture/insects that may get behind the frame has no direct path into the frame (rot prevention).
Yes they are on the same side but they do offset them so they should work with a traditional front door well depending on the style of door knob that you have there may be some interference
I noticed you had a heat barrier on interior of your garage door. I thought about doing this since in I live in Central Florida. Anything to stop the heat. What grade of heat barrier do you recommend. I had a few extra car windshield blockers I was thinking about canabalizing.
They are pretty made to fit with an existing door. So just open your front too and measure the door itself and that will tell you what size security door you need. Thanks for your comment!
Thank you for this info! Great video! Can you please tell me what the opening size of your door is and what the size of the security door is (including rails)? I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!
what are you screwing the security door frame into? the interior door thin jam or did you add some molding around the opening to screw into? how thick does the molding around the opening need to be to fit the security door frame? i haven't seen a video yet that explains what to drill the security door frame into? right now i have the interior door thin jam and new drywall butting up to interior door jam. the jam isnt wide enough to drill big screws into for security door. please help
Im curious, it seems like it would be better ti fit the lockset PRIOR to installing the seperate side peice it latches to? So you can be sure it's actually going to latch? Lee, i make my living doing the same as you in the same town. Thank you for the video.
Im in sacramento. Ironicaly enough i justdid a door, ended up a little off level. I pulled the blocks as i was running the screws, didnt allow for the slop in the holes. Giod customers of mine. Ill be grinding and replacing the screws in the next week cause i also found out the Ryobi screw extractor dosent work for poop.
I centered and plumbed the door, then marked the holes. When I predrilled for the bolts, they lined up with the gap between the door frame and the stud. The bolt would only be attached to the brick molding. Any suggestions for making a structural connection that doesn’t require removing the molding?
The casing of my front door is about 1/2" will that be enought to install security door? I saw another video where he said casing needs to be a minimum of 1'? House was built in 2005 in clovis ca
I tried to install one today following manufacturer directions and used a 3/16 drill bit but the one way screw is stuck after going in for just half an inch. I even added pressure but its not moving at all so i stopped. What am i doing wrong? Do i need a bigger drill bit to drill bigger holes before j put screw in or do i need a hammer drill instead of a regular one?
I have the same problem with getting the screw in, it stuck half way in. Not sure what I did wrong. I even drilled a bigger hole than the 3/16 as instructed in the manufacturer instructions.
No, on the security doors the hinges are welded on for security so there's no way to remove the door from the frame unless you really hack into it and reweld it
Question i want to buy a security door but i notice the inside door knobs are on the right....does it matter Cause i see in your video there to the left even the security door Or would i have to install the security door the other way so it can be lock on the left?
The security doors are reversible so you just need to install it upside down. This only works if the design is the same on the bottom as it is on the top.
hey thank you for your comment, I do not but it would be pretty much the same installation as this just remove the regular screen door and install this security door in the same manner.
Great video. Thanks for posting. I've got a security door like this that rubs the floor when the door swings out. I don't see any hinge screws or really anything adjustable on the frame or door itself. Any ideas how I can adjust or raise the door so it doesn't rub the bottom on the floor?
Very good video. Succinct and to the point. Most importantly, the video didnt jump around like a Go Pro on a jack in the box spring sitting on somebody's shoulder!!!
Question?? If security isn't really a concern, but having air flow through the house, is it really necessary to install those screws? What about a hex head lag screw instead - painted black of course. Some one who really wants to break into my home will need to travel with a socket or impact drill to break into my home, or better yet - just go through my window
I'm going to install one of these soon. I am curious how the new door knob for the security screen door doesn't hit the door knob for the regular door? Am I missing something, it seems they would hit one another?
A typical knob wont hit each other, there is enough distance between the front door and the security door and the screen door knob is slightly higher than the front door knob.
Excellent very easy to follow thank you,I have never done this before I’m going to take another leap of faith and try to do this as a single mom do you think I should
Nice video. Re: security screws. If you don't want to mar the old finish you can cut slots in the fancy screws with a Dremel and use a flat blade screwdriver to easily remove them. Your old security door would sell, on-line, in a heart beat with a bit of refurb. You should maybe put someone in charge of resale of job spoils. I use a neighbor lady and pay her 33% commission. Just about everything will sell at the right price.
Great video! I am going to need to get some knowledge on installing one into stucco...it has that stucco bump out that is a hollowing behind..any tips?
Hello, hoping you are still active. I need to install a new front entry door and also need a new security door. The entry doors I am looking at come pre-hung, so I am wondering how do I adapt the new security door to the pre-hung entry door?
Well actually, they also sell chains you can just wrap around your bumper/hitch and then you can affix it to the door and you can just yank it off completely. Let's be honest though you're just trying to be a wet blanket and Meth Mouth Mary isn't going to have all the special tools for all that to do a typical residential B&E. Unless you're holding government secrets and have access to their measures any security you can get in the civilian market is just to make it so you're a more difficult target than your neighbors.
Good Day , I like your new door & want to install it to my back yard door. Pls pls advise the name of the door or item number of the door you got from home depot. Is it surface mount or recess mount ? How much is cost. Thanks .
Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately I don't have that information as this was a while ago. Your best bet is to go to home Depot and check their doors out. Thank you and best of luck!
@The Handyman Journey I want to install a security door inside the home to divide the house for AirBnB rental. Can this be done without ruining the walls?
We have a roll up bamboo screen that hangs in front of the door. Blocks the sun to keep things cooler also. Otherwise, just leave the interior door partially open; 6”(?). That’s more than enough for adequate airflow while blocking almost all line of sight.

Thank you for the vid, just finished installing one around an hour ago today. You saved me $180 which is what HD wanted to install it.
What are you talking about.i asked to see instinstallation on a rod iron screen door and I did not see no video for such thing I saw the video on time but shares
HD near me now wants $260 for installation. I called a handyman he says $250 🤦
Fast forward to 2023. HD just quoted me $350 for installation only.
It looks plain and simple. Yet you are thoroughly explaining all of what we need to know to make it easier and full proof. Thank you for the lesson.
Your so welcome! Glad this was helpful!
its "fool" proof
Great security door installation Allen! We don't have many here in Michigan. We typically install storm doors, to help keep the cold air out! Thanks again !
Hey thanks for your comment Dennis! Yes, The climate is much different here, Much warmer

Thank you for the DIY security door installation. You make it look so easy.
You are very welcome!
I love it when I see people make things look easy !!
Hey thanks for your comment!
Nice job! To the point and no BS! Yeah and the grinder method. I’ll take a drill and tighten the chuck onto the threads and reverse them out.
you can grinder cut a slot in the bolt head and remove with large flat blade screedriver too
Good info! My house has like this weird vinyl on it and it doesn’t seem very sturdy like wood. What would you suggest?
If it's what I am thinking you may need to remove the vinyl
@@handymanjourney yea it’s pretty flimsy and not very dense, thanks for the quick reply
Ive always wondered if the security deadlock and Knob are the same side as the front door knobs if there is room for both?
Yes they are on the same side but they do offset them so they should work with a traditional front door well depending on the style of door knob that you have there may be some interference

I think the ones from home Depot work just fine!
For someone who does not have a pre-existing security door, how do you measure to ensure you get the right size?
They are pretty made to fit with an existing door. So just open your front too and measure the door itself and that will tell you what size security door you need. Thanks for your comment!
Thank you for this info! Great video! Can you please tell me what the opening size of your door is and what the size of the security door is (including rails)? I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!
For front door most doors are 36 in wide. So you'll just need to buy a 36-in wide security door
@@handymanjourney Thank you
Where did you get the door? Like the look of it.
Lowes I believe
Your installation is way easier than the instructions included or ads from the manufacturers...

Is this door any good? I’m purchasing one tomorrow for my back door
Yep! Have been very pleased with it and installed many of them for clients!
Do you do other security doors if so how much? we live in Sacramento

I paint houses, this is something I can add to the job. Lots of rusted security doors out there 😀
Thanks

You ever have to replace the exterior door moulding/trim to get the screen to fit?

Did the old bolt holes not cause some issues with he new holes? Those two holes looked close together.
They didn't cause any issues. They appeared to be far enough apart so that was good!

The door knob on the security door fits over where the door knob is on the inner door?
hello from Stockton!
I used a grinder with a cutoff wheel to create a slot on the screw and was able to reverse the screw out. Less sparks and metal dust.
What screw size.?
The screws come with the new security door
