Many Croatians are complaining about tourists and tourism but they have absolutely no problem ripping off every single person that sets a foot in Dubrovnik. I'm going to Dubrovnik each few days and there are a lots of people. It reminds me on zombie hordes, lol. Anyway, Dubrovnik is a nice city, but overpriced (hype and prices). Speaking as Hrvat.
The problem is that all the guide books point to the old city as the focal point. There are many beautiful things to see in the Neretva-Dubrovnik County. Most tourists for example don't even visit the Lokrum Nature Reserve, or Mount Srdj Fortifications... Instead they end up paying for example to see the Synagogue (& its badly stocked museum of replicas, reproductions & outright fakes)... and yet some of the wall murials & paintings found in older churches right outside the city walls are probably the most authentic... They just don't know.
I spent a fair bit of time in Croatia in the '90s. I think anywhere along the coastline would be nice..... lots of small towns and islands that are probably not visited by many tourists at all. Let the owners of the cruise ships pay 20-30 euros for each passenger on board the ships. At the same time, it would increase incomes and reduce tourism.
This video confirms my innate dislike of holidays. My last one was a two night trip about 12 years ago. I couldn't wait to get home. I feel sorry for the residents of places like this. There is a belief that tourism brings money in, as stated by one of the tourists, but that money rarely impacts on the majority of residents, who do not own shops and bars, etc.. In most places many of the staff in hotels, bars and restaurants are outsiders, there for the season, often foreign students. Stratford-upon-Avon was the place that I used to go to do my shopping, but it became impossible as the ordinary day to day shops were replaced by tourist traps. The out of town shops are like every other out of town site, and traffic is appalling. I no longer shop there. The same happens it places like Dubrovnik, people move out because of the crowds, the lack of shops for day to day living, and the lack of facilities. However, I also feel sorry for the tourists who are falling for the lure of these places. They arrive at a place, are herded like cattle, see only things above head height, and are ripped off in every bar, restaurant and cafe they enter. "Ah, but the memories they have" you might say. Well friends of mine who have travelled to many countries have admitted that they get confused between different places they've visited, and have often said that they did not see very much because of the crowds. So not many memories there. I shall continue to enjoy my home, with, perhaps the odd day trip (though it's almost 2 years since I was more than 20 miles from home). If I want to see a place, I've got RUclips, and now I can also say I'm doing my bit to save these sites from destruction by over tourism....
Fees/taxes costing in the hundreds, to land and enter countries. Reduce flights, and implement different prices: locals/citizen prices, and then prices for non-locals. Enough is enough.
they could just sell tickets at the gates, to non-residents, non-citizens, etc. Charge enough money during the busy season, to actually reduce the incoming crowds. Problem solved.
Banning big cruise ships seems like an obvious solution.
