I cried at the part about Uibin and Jeongjo solving math problems together...that's so freaking cute😭, as a history nerd and kdrama addict I genuinely appreciate this kind content SO much! Theres really not much information about this kind of stuff in English! So Thank you for this!
Apparently, Seong Uibin was actually quite smart in reality as well! It was so nice to watch a show being so female centric and focusing on female empowerment without women having to do swordsmanship and being forcefully associated with male activities and skills at the time to be more badass or whatever, The Red Sleeve is all up for showing us that women could be quite powerful doing what that was considered traditional feminine activities at the time (all female characters are powerful and willing to protect the things important to them in their own ways). we also got the writer being brave enough to criticize a very beloved king of Korean history for having herirchal and patriarchal ideologies...this has to be the only Saguk drama that sided with women at ALL COSTS,

This was another excellent look into the history behind the drama. I found a couple of different things interesting in this one, the first one being the switch in the politicians favored by Jeongjo before and after his succession. The drama presents Deokro as a close childhood friend to Jeongjo, and it was because of that connection that Jeongjo has a hard time cutting ties with him later on. Another video stated that in reality, Deokro was 25 years old when he first gained political power, so I'm guessing he and Jeongjo didn't have as deep a relationship as presented in the drama and that Jeongjo eventually realized that Deokro was simply less useful to have around (and actually more of a hindrance). Historian Yonghwan (teacher? professor? I'm not sure how to address him) repeatedly mentioned Jeong Yakyong as a player that gained more favor after Deokro's deposition, though the drama doesn't include him. Instead, Sim Heewon seems to be Jeongjo's new righthand man in the latter portion of the series. A different video presented a complicated view of Heewon and Jeongjo's relationship, saying that they disagreed many times but were sort of bffs. I don't know about either politician so I'm wondering what encouraged the decision to include Heewon over others.
Another interesting thing was Jeongjo's reformatory ideas. Compared to other rulers, he truly does seem deserving of the words 'benevolent' and 'just king' that people use to describe him. It'd be great to know what influenced him to be more sympathetic towards his people (as rulers should be). I don't think he was simply born a good king. From the drama, it seems that his Confucian teachings taught him to put his people above all else, but Confucianism was popular since the birth of Joseon (from what I know). Did Jeongjo's receptivity towards the people's struggles make him an outlier among other Joseon kings or did most Joseon kings hold similar ideals (likely rooted in Confucianism)? Was Yeongjo before him as in tune with the people's struggles? If Jeonjgo was indeed an anomaly, what events might've inspired him and other elites of the time to be more understanding than their predecessors?
In addition to his benevolence, Jeongjo's keenness also comes to light through Historian Yonghwan's discussion of Hwaseong fortress. In the last video, we learned that Jeongjo used the birth of Munhyo to settle the political turmoil at the time. From my understanding, he does a similar thing here, knocking down several problems by constructing the fortress. One of his reasons for building the fortress was to honor his late father, so he likely harbored resentment towards those who instigated Sado's death (Yeongjo in particular), but we don't get to see much of this in the drama. I wish we got to see more of his political shrewdness in the TRSC, but we'd probably need like 40 episodes to cover everything that went on.
Also, despite his accomplishments, he didn't live long enough to achieve all his goals. One thing I'm still really curious about is the mystery surrounding his death. Some sources online shoot down the theory that he was poisoned, so I'm kind of baffled that we don't know how a figure with such extensive records (I assume) of his life died. I'm just as curious about Uibin's death. Wiki says it was lung cancer, other sources claim poisoning because Jeongjo favored her so much, and one video I watched mentioned preeclampsia (along with the back-to-back miscarriages and pregnancies that weakened her body).
Like everyone else here, I love the bit about Jeonjo and Uibin's 'intellectual pleasure.' Though I am uncomfortable by certain aspects of their relationship (and the drama explored those aspects), hearing that these two nerds found each other brings tears to my eyes again. It hurts that we don't know much about the brilliant Uibin, so any hint that she was happy warms my heart. I've been watching Korean dramas since I was 12 years old, but for the first time, I'm taking a break from them because I've been so greatly affected by Uibin's story (and Lee Se Young's phenomenal performance).
Lastly, thank you for translating your video. Idk about other places, but where I'm from, we don't learn as much about Korean history as we do about Chinese and Japanese history. It really only enters our discussions during the Korean War because for most of history it's been a vassal state or fought over other powers (China, Mongols, Japan, etc.). It's also a bit harder to find credible translated sources about Korean history, so sageuks (if done right) can be wonderful sources to learn more. If you watch other sageuks in the future and if it isn't too much of a hassle, I hope you can release videos then too. I apologize for writing essays in the comments lol.

I enjoyed reading your comment, but as for Uibin's death some court people including Jeongjo's step grandmother the queen dowager raised the possibility of Uibin and her son's being poisoned. After Uibin's death, Jeongjo sent one of his eunuchs, who involved serving medicine to Uibin and Munhyo (his first son), and Hwabin's uncle to exile in fury but not for any apparent reason. But he later called up the eunuch saying there's not much ground. Jeongjo wrote himself in Uibin's eulogy that he had always watched over her washing and taking medicines and he personally checked all the medicines she was taking to prevent any poisoning. Uibin was moved to the building, Jungheegung, which Jeongjo was using as an office, and he closely watched over her till her death. She died there. Also he attended the sick bed of Munhyo himself though his death was more mysterious in that he was recovered so Jeongjo left his bedside but then suddenly he got bad again and died. Anyway it seems he and Uibin decided not to investigate their son's death to avoid political turmoil and bloodshed when there was no apparent evidence. From what I read about Jeongjo's and Uibin's death, most historians seem to think the assassination theory is just a conspiracy theory. The cause of Uibin's death was unknown but it could be preenclampsia or cancer that couldn't be identified at that time. Jeongjo had been suffering with severe boils for a long time before his death. He was a workaholic who often skipped meals, sleep to work and a heavy smoker and drinker. By 40, he was quite aged with grey hair, wrinkles and lost teeth about which he derided himself comparing himself with his older subjects.

@@user-dh9bt9dk5u I, in turn, enjoyed reading yours. From what you said, it seems like historians lean more toward the theory that Jeongjo just died from poor health. The combination of his boils, which might've been a symptom of something more serious, poor lifestyle, and stress from his duties as king probably took their toll on him. On the other hand, it seems that there's more uncertainty in Uibin and Munhyo's case. I read about Jeongjo personally checking her medicine, but this, unfortunately, did not prevent her early death from whatever cause. I did not know about Munhyo recovering then dying suddenly. You're saying he recovered from measles only to die from an illness a short time later? If so, I'm wondering if there's a possibility that he died because the measles reset his immune system (?) So he might've died from some other disease because his body forgot the pathogens he's encountered up until that point in his life. idk I'm no epidemiologist. Regardless, it is tragic that Jeongjo and Uibin could not investigate his death further. The drama presents the idea that Jeongjo was a great king who couldn't fulfill his role as a husband. In reality, he might've also been unable to fulfill his role as a father. I cannot imagine how devastating it would be for a parent to not have closure on their child's death, especially when that parent has the means to attempt to do so. If you don't mind me asking, are there any specific sources you read where you got this info? I'm reading The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong and later The Red Queen, so I'll add anything else I find to my reading list.

@@EvilBunny12899 I read or watch Korean historians' accounts on blogs and RUclips, also Joseon Sillok, Joseon historians' records of kings' activities and court events. There are quite a few historians who argue that Jeongjo was assassinated too. First, Jeongjo suffered at least 11 assassination attempts. Second, just 2 weeks before his death, his doctors were changed and the new doctor, whom he hadn't appointed, put ginseng in his medicine which Jeongjo, who was very knowledgeable on medicine, had repeatedly emphasized not to give him because he wasn't compatible with it. Why Munhyo died suddenly 2 days after he had recovered is unknown but it's said that ginseng was mixed in his medication as well after he was recovered and the boy might be incompatible with the herb like his dad. Third, the Noron, the most powerful aristocrat faction from his great grandfather's era and the group that he tried to suppress throughout his reign surrounded him. His relatives by marriage--his step grandmother, his mom, and his last concubine Subin Park (aristocrat concubines were selected by dowagers the king's grandmother and mother, then finally approved by the king. But usually they were chosen as a political deal), who bore him his successor, Sunjo, were all from the Noron faction. His mom who dearly loved her son and Subin, whom historical records say a good wise woman favored by Jeongjo in his last years have never been suspected as a possible assassinator, but his step grandmother, who was ambitious and smart and who would rule the kingdom behind the 10 year old Sunjo, was often suspected. One could easily bribe a doctor to give possibly harmful medicine on the king and if the doctor insisted that ginseng was necessary to cure him--there's no way to clearly rebut with the knowledge of that era. But although the relationship between Jeongjo and his step grandmother was politically in tension, historians say that their relationship wasn't too bad and the grandmother actually executed some of his policies like freeing government slaves though she replaced most of important gvt positions with Noron people. Also in later years the powerful aristocrats who overwhelmed later Joseon kings were not from her family but families of Sunjo's wife, whom Jeongjo had chosen, and Subin Park's, to a less extent. Anyway the doctor might've been bribed by a Noron aristocrat or it could be that Jeongjo's death was just a misfortune. As for Hanjungrok, his mom's accounts on the events in her life, are purely biased on her point of view and purpose, which is clearing her family, the Hong clan's name. She was also known to change her ally often for her purpose and revised Hanjungrok several times to make it more advantageous to her, to her family, and to her ally. First she favored Jeongjo's queen and gave her accounts to her. But since Sunjo was born, her favor shifted to Subin, revised it and gave it to Subin. So historians say some accounts and tones have been changed, but I haven't read it. BTW, I am Korean so I just read various Korean sources but I'm by no means an expert.

@@user-mr5yw7mx4g 11 assassination attempts!? Wow, Jeongjo had it rough... From my understanding, you're positing that there's evidence for the idea that he was indeed poisoned. He attempted to give power to the Namin faction, which might've riled the Norons, with whom he was already in disagreement. Evidence of his death may come from the fact that there was a change in the royal doctor/the person treating his boils. A Noron politician, Shim Hwan-ji, provided him with a different doctor, whose concoction worsened his symptoms and might've worked in conjunction with his already poor health to cause his death (I'm curious to know how modern scientists were able to do that, but I doubt that the source you're referencing has an English translation (?)). Further evidence comes from the actions of the dowager queen, who took control following Jeongjo's death since Sunjo was too young. Using the Shinyu Persecution as an excuse, she undid many of Jeongjo's reforms and removed his men from power, one of whom was Jeong Yakyong. With that number of assassination attempts, the idea that Jeongjo was poisoned according to how you described doesn't sound so unlikely. I read that he suffered a lot since young because he had people constantly watching him and the historian said in the last video that he always made sure to display his best self in front of Yeongjo, so dying in such a way after a lifetime of being on edge is quite sad.
Also, thank you for describing how the actions of the Norons during Jeongjo's reign set the stage for turmoil once the Andong Kim clan took control. Again, 11 years of famine!? It's no wonder things hit the roof. You mention the Hong Gyeong-rae revolution, which I'm guessing, just based on similarity, was an event that might've inspired the Donghak Revolution. I read a bit about this when I watched Nokdu Flower, and remember reading about Kim Gu, as he was introduced as Kim Changsoo at the end of the drama. You're certainly right in pointing out the mysterious deaths of reformatory leaders and progressives who are on the side of ordinary people regardless of time period. Yes, unfortunately, corruption in different levels of government has been an ongoing cycle since far back in history, and in the present day, there is the added threat of the media, which is often used by those in power to push forth harmful narratives. I hope you at least take solace in the fact that in Korea, the former president was punished. In other countries, this is a wild dream.
