After seeing a bunch of cheap iMac's on my local Craigslist. I thought, How bad can it be to game on an 11-year-old Apple iMac I paid $160 for?

Okay everybody just simmer down. I do know the difference between MacOS and IOS. I just misspoke. My videos are unscripted and that's why sometimes things come out a back weirdly. 😂
it's ok man....no one is perfect....love your videos....fan from India
I Still liked the video it was great! 😀
Dawid Does Tech Stuff Dawid you can buy a spiral screw extractor to remove the screw they are 3 bucks at Home Depot
That stand cost 1k man.
i useing the veary same computer i feel the same way about it
"Running crysis 2 on imac except Im streaming it from my PC"
lol
Really making a case for 11 year old imacs there.
LPT for dealing with stripped screws like this one had for the RAM access: Get a rubber band and lay it over the screw, then jam in your screwdriver. You'll be surprised how well it works. The rubber will compress where it needs to, fill the gaps your screwdriver can't, and because it's rubber, it'll pretty much stick in place.
That’s a brilliant tip. Thanks I will use that
@@davidlewis1787don’t act like him
Not bad for 256mb of video ram and a core 2 duo.
No! Its bad af. 40 fps on half life 2 is not good lmao
@@fps8786 I think they were talking about how for the specs it's not bad especially considering that's it's a mac
@@_._shinonome_._ I have this. I upgraded it to 8gb ram and a new faster cpu like a E3500.
WHAT???
with this setup jt should run at 60 fps without ANY problem..
@@AndroidFerret do you forget that it's also a mac
a tip, in steam when you turn on the fps counter, also turn on "high contrast fps counter" turns it green so we can actually see what the frames are.
iMacs have a great feature that stops you from gaming on it for prolonged periods. You can see a reflection of yourself in the screen that makes you rethink the life choices you made that led you to this point and you stop
good thought
I do the same thing when the screen blacks
I like the old apple products, but the new ones are just to expensive for me.
They are so crazy expensive. 😳
@Gaming Yorksame
@@DawidDoesTechStuff sus emoji😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
For sure. Vintage Apple products, like the 68K macs and PowerPC macs are great to collect and restore. Even the relatively newer stuff is pretty durable and beautiful

My dad still uses one of these I fixed for him around 2011. It lost a couple hard drives before I realized the hard drive fan assembly was bad and replaced it. He still uses it to this day running Ubuntu.
Basically, the Imac is just a screen for your powerful PC running in the background, I was hoping games to run natively ha ha
I had one of these all the way through school, I remember playing Minecraft hunger games on it, it played surprisingly well. I’m going to buy one at the end of the month just for the nostalgia 😂
I currently play MC Java Edition on it and it isn’t half bad! Granted, I did buy a Logitech G300s mouse and add an extra 8gb stick of ddr3 ram, but it holds above 50 fps on Hypixel
Edit: I’ve now installed Lunar Client and get an avg of 120 fps! Should be getting a gaming PC by the end of the summer but I’ll miss my little iMac, it’s served me well
These old Macs have aged beautifully they still offer a decent enough experience for simple tasks
It might have an apple on the screen but It is still a potato. Great video!
@Gaming York stop trying to defend overpriced trash. Good looking trash, but still trash.
Mammutbrot it is a 11 year old pc lol, back in the day it was a beast
@@frederikvanreusel welp, macs now suck in price to performance. Only good if you edit videos or pictures because the software is good.
@@imsosuperduper macs dont necessarily suck, but youll get a 300% better pc for the same money. And not too many games are playable on the mac.
@@imsosuperduper oh if youre planning to play roblox you are for sure gonna get a good pc for that. You can build a pc for roblox for about 200 dollars, but if you wanna do some more gaming in the future youll be abe to get a capable pc for about 500 dollars. I would always recommend building your own pc. You usually save 200 or more dollars (prebuilts are waaaay to expensive in my country) but the downside is that youll have to watch some videos and read up on what pc you want to build and how to build it. When it comes to building, its basically like lego, you only need a screwdriver for a few processes. I would suggest watching some videos on budget gaming computers.
Omg I remember when your channel was so small I knew from the start you would succeed as a tech channel! Keep it going love your vids!
Dawid we love you but stooping to an iMac? What went wrong in your life dude? (Jokes aside, fun video dude :) )
Haha!! Really scraping the bottom of the barrel. 😁
@@DawidDoesTechStuff You write exactly as you speak so I heard that in your voice 😅
I think the rubber banding feeling you mentioned is the awful mouse acceleration that OS X has.
Some years ago I actually tested Windows vs Linux vs OS X on the same hardware to check the performance under the same OpenGL games and benchmarks, OS X was the worst by some margin.
Im glad they fixed this in MacOS Catalina
Use a flat head for that stripped screw
Or drill it to get it out.
Stabbing the screwdriver into the screw with some excessive force might also work. It's not like this would be a terrible loss if something goes wrong.
02:00 one more reason why a cheap 3d printer belongs into every tech enthusiasts home!
Print a slightly oversized PH bit in ABS, then heat it up and press it against the stripped screw
Voila, now you have the perfect bit for that stripped screw
This way I unscrewed pretty much every (not fully) stripped screw
Ofc there are other options too, but 3d printers are just super versatile
I had this exact model imac before I built my first PC. I was able to play the Orange Box, CSGO and Civilization V on it.
Hey, I do the same thing but with a 1.6 GHZ dual core processor only on MacOS. No GPU. 10/10
Hey, the speck of dust is easy to remove. The glas can be pulled off with one or better two suction cups. This can also help with the dullness of the screen.
"Screen too dull? Just remove the protective glass!"
what happned to the iMac running Windows that we saw on your story
My old school uses those I macs, they’re pretty great. For flash games lol
May I recommend trying out some emulation on it? Like Playstation 2, Dreamcast, Gamecube? There are plenty of fun games there, the graphics are not end all be all in my opinion.
"I've never used iOS before." And you still haven't.
Last time I came across a Mac like that I installed Windows 7 On it and it handled that very well.
I’m a simple man, I see a Dawid video about trying to use old pointless hardware to game with, I press play......
😂
Did you try turning the Brightness up? Brightness will be a high F Key on a Standard PC Keyboard or there should be an option in System Preferences.
If I'm not mistaken the 20 inch iMac used a TN panel, only the 27 inch model used an IPS panel. This changed with the 21.5 inch in late 2009 also receiving an IPS panel.
"the rear io it's okay to plug some several overpriced peripherals" xD
I still rock an early 2009 iMac with original HDD. I feel like a pimp.
how did you install fortnite your imac, i have the exact same one bbut it would say imac too old to install epic games
Get a screw extractor set Dawid.... It's a tool set that you will use with PCs.
Usually how I deal with stripped screws, I would use like rubber bracelets and squeeze it in between the screwdriver and screw. Then I'll try to turn the screw to at least get it out.
At the exact moment when he said "but how important is audio really?" My audio stopped playing and the video continued. I thought he was just doing that to be funny, but then i Look and my phone had connected to my car over bluetooth. Haha
one thing, if you change the hard drive to a hybrid drive or ssd then the temps will go 20c lower. The old hard drive does get very hot
This video could be titled 'Trying To Game On An 11-Day Old Apple iMac' and you would've gotten the same results, lol..
Such a steam answer, "welll that should just work" lol GREAT!
I use a 12 year old iMac on the daily ngl. Got it handed down, have upgraded CPU, GPU, hard drive to SSD, 4GB stock RAM to 16 GB RAM. etc. Works like a charm except for the fact that I had to take a saw to the case to make room for a better fan and is missing the temperature sensor so the fan just runs 24/7, also running it "Hackintosh" as they say. Lack of support from softwares really drives me crazy but I game on it quite often. Usually running games through Wine Bottler or Bootcamp though. It's a lot of work for gaming tbh, definitely NOT worth it for gaming, but I only have it for the purposes of writing and producing music. Slowly but surely putting together a windows build for gaming and non-music related stuff.
Is there a sound output on the streaming pc side otherwise there will be no audio.
Dawid : *I never used iOS before*
Apple users : OMG HE SAID IOS INSTEAD OF MACOS
Wait... are there even Apple users watching this channel ?
xD
Cringe
Yep that was just 🤦♂️
"Beautiful slow poke" lol
Look, you can make fun of Apple all you want... But don't play with my cashew cheese
Have you tried running Windows on it, would most likely solve the graphical issues
Hey Dawid! If you want to run Crysis on Windows 10. You need to copy the 32 & 64 bit binaries folders from the expansion "Crysis Warhead" back to orginal Crysis and just overright the folders. Then orginal Crysis will work on Windows 10 👍 Great video, I love your stuff and comedic value.
I got one for free. A 2011 model with the 1TB drive. That slow screen start up happens right after you plug it in, I saw that plenty of times when I spent hours trying to install the OS because none of my options worked.
What you do with a PC like this is make it a kitchen PC for really basic web browsing, streaming, email, etc. Throw it on a counter and don't get upset if it dies.
Patrick Goodhart that’s a really good idea!
You can get something to get that screw out, so might be an idea to have a look and see if you can upgrade it or something. That can't just be the only screw for the thing.
Maybe the rubber band trick?
What's the point of using geforce now or streaming
I guess I need a mac something now... Just to laugh my ass off :)
Finally the Real question being answered.
8:11 I had the same problem, don't exit out of the game while it is running and don't make any changes to the audio settings. Btw try resseting it
Can i know the name op this iMac?pleasss
As someone who has never used pc’s before, so here I am trying a 2008 iMac for gaming
To open a stripped screw you take flat head screwdriver and hammer it in to the screw. Works perfectly on screws stuck on walls but pc/mac work it might have one or two downsides.
That method could work, however, you don't want to damage your entire machine by inverting the thing and then hammering away at it. All of your components, ESPECIALLY your screen would be in danger.
Better solution would be a stripped screw removal kit from the local hardware store used in a low powered drill. Take your time with it and it will open up.
Unfortunately, once you're in there, you're going to have to try to find Mac specific RAM from 2009, and then try to find a screw that fits the compartment to close it back up.
@@vshakir622 You don't need Mac specific memory. Standard DDR3 SO-DIMMs work fine.
The shot of the Apple in front of the window is just so on point
My mom has that computer and I’ve always wondered what was in it
Use a flathead to get that Phillips screw off. Sometimes if it won't fit you can use the corner of the flathead.
I used to game on an iMac for 7 years, just built my pc yesterday and I’m never going back
Bros experiencing everything I experienced before I built my PC. Screenflow was convenient tho
Tbf, I can imagine that if you are going to be using cloud gaming services like Geforce Now, buying an old Windows or Mac all in one computer would probably be a very good way to save yourself some money considering you don't need to buy a monitor, keyboard or mouse.
"I've never used iOS before" i cringed my teeth out. sorry guy but yikes LMAO
Corrects himself after bro
Dawid never used iOS on an iMac. Every iMac owner never used iOS on an iMac
try usng a flat blade screwdriver that is tte correct width on the stripped-out philips head screw.
HOW DID YOU UPDATE IT TO MOJAVE? PLS REPLYYYY
was the iMac at max brightness?
did you add any upgrades to it or no?
I think imma repeat this with my $130 Late 2012 21.5" iMac i use for my video editing... when, I dunno. But i feel compelled to now.
One word: Bootcamp.
dawid you know that geforce now is basically just outputting a video signal right? no rendering is being done on the mac hardware so messing aroudn with settings doesnt affect perfomance of the client pc only the host. Im very familiar with remote gaming, i highly reccomend using a 3rd party app like Moonlight if you ever wanna see what the nvidia tech is really capable of.
i have a question when you runned fortnite was it in geforce now or was it the native game?
AT&G GeForce now
@@RealCobby oh ok well now i will not buy it lol
You and randomgaminginhd should do a vid where you make the best pc you can with a set budget! And see how they differ in the uk and us
Is bootcamp not supported on this iMac?
I just hit up a huge warehouse full of new old stock iMacs and dells, (weird to see them playing together) I brought back 38 dell workstations all with i7 3770's and i5 4670's. I did however pick up 2 iMacs and they are both a1311's. I wanted to see the gaming performance one these beasts and who do I find when I fire this up and duo a search??? Good old Dawid!! Mine are a bit newer and I felt the same way...did not want to set it too close to my pc. . . why does 1080p on this iMac screen seem sooo much better then 4k on my pc?? lol fyi the scroll wheel on iOS is set inverted....
I used to play Minecraft on one of these exact imac
Fun Fact. Im literally using that exact mac right now
Coild someone explain this crisis issue?
Back in 2005 I was building computer systems which ran without any issues?
I also ran fortnight on a 2006 q6600 with a 750gtx and got on Dec settings 120fps.
So seems odd that old system struggle in some ways...
World of warships went well...
Even just about on a 6800gtx....
I often get better benches than some guys and channels..
But forget all that a iMac...
What was ciniebench results...
Imac are all about video editing..
All led screens were like that back then.. dark room required!
Meanwhile, I have that same model iMac you have in the video... But, I paid $20 for it, quite a great deal ngl.
I still miss my Mac Quadra and System 7.6. I got a Mac back in the 80s and remember the PC people ribbing on me for wanting to use mouse and graphic user interface.
im watching this video on that Exact i mac
Stripped screws can be removed by drilling it with a reverse drill bit. The blade will bite into the screw and it will turn.
why does this trash still go for 160? also do you know anything good for vancouver/coquitlam area for cheap thinkcentre/ optiplexes?
thinking of putting a 1650 super low profile in iit
It runs Mac OS not iOS lols. And also it's Geforce Now, not Nvidia go... Like bruh
He Says Mac OS later in the vid... when He's testing Half life.
I realised afterwards, but still
Hahaha!! I have mouth typos all the time. 😂
Lols. Love your videos man. Do more mouth typos, they're quite funny and entertaining 😂✨
I thought they were on purpose
i had the same issue with og crysis and apparently the accepted work around is to just launch the game through the system files as an admin
i had that imac and all I did was play hl2 and struggled in the benchmark lmao -
Dawid: I never used iOS
Me an Apple fanboy *screams in macOS*
GAMER TIMEZ BROSKI! I love the great work, keep it up dawid
Hahaha!! Thank you.
I'd try a flathead on that screw.
How did you get Mojave on your 2009 iMac?? Did you use a Mojave patch? my 2011 doesn't support mojave and looking to upgrade to get a little more life out of it.
I don't think he did, if you watch carefully it seemed edited maybe to hide serial
Dawid, you can still into the head of the screw to get in there
I’m getting one of these in a few days time :)
*iMac powers up*
Me: BEZEL
If you ever need a front LCD screen and front glass just holler ...had a buddy gimme 1 to fix and it was done for but I saved the screen and ram :) suction cup on front glass will pull screen out so you can get to mobo :) love the vids ! That's awsome you and Timmy Joe are friends ..I love to watch him too :)
crysis works on win 10 but one has to get bin 64 files-folder and rename to bin 32 and replace in crysis. i am still playing that way.
I just got a 13 year old iMac the first aluminum model for $30 slapped in a new CPU and RAM, also an SSD, did the dosdude1 Catalina patcher and it's running Catalina almost like a new computer.
correction, a new, really bad computer.
@@JohnSmith-li5pj all things considered, "good"
Hey David I've got what I think you be a cool video idea for you.
Ive got an old Alienware m15x. It's was pretty impressive new but is pretty mediocre at best these days. Interestingly it it quite upgradable for a laptop. Cpu has a small but not insignificant available upgrade path and according to online posts the GPU is actually significantly upgradable. Ram is only dd3 but still can be bumped up.
Anyway, the catch is these parts will run me about $400 to upgrade. So Im not sure it would be worth it.
Tldr; get ahold of an old but upgradable laptop and max it out. Is an old high end upgraded laptop better than a new "shit" laptop.
You could try a Torx bit on that stripped screw you shown at 2:06
Can it run the crysis though? With out spending 5000 dollars just to play... With tax
That imac looks more futuristic than the new imacs
This was like watching you playing in front of a mirror XD reflection was intense
I have 3 of these laying around in my basement lol
