The best advice is to keep it simple... don't go crazy with gadgets, accessories, and gear... get out there and do some fishing with one (maybe two poles) and basic gear. Buy the items you want as you find a need for them.
The one thing I would add is to bring an anchor. The anchor rode may also double as a tow rope. Just like my motorized vessels, I always bring an anchor. In a motorized vessel dropping anchor when the vessel is rendered inoperable will maintain your position. I suggest bringing an anchor on a kayak as well. Tie it off in the back of the kayak at an appropriate depth so it will hit bottom. Then coil the rode neatly and place the anchor in a back rod holder. If the kayak flips the anchor will drop and prevent the kayak from getting away from you. I mainly fish the flats in the Tampa area. My anchor rode is only 25 ft. I adjust the length using a loop in the rode and a carabiner clip.
I wish my kayak had a seat buckle! Some of the waves I take on feel like my spine is getting compressed! I have WAY to much $$$$ in my kayak. YOU MUST have a kayak cart too!
Only suggestion is that if one is planning on the Boonedox landing wheels, try to mount them just behind the seat as that will come closer to center of gravity.
In central PA Shanks Mare is the only outfitter I know that has demo days. They are also the only place I know that is actually on the water. The vast majority of new kayak fishermen around here buy from big box stores. In PA you only need to register powered vessels. Non-powered vessels can get a launch permit. It can be bought online, for 1 or 2 years.
If your wife says no more gear go to her closet and shoe shelf and say no more clothes she has "all she could need". Shuts down the convo real quick and better than having to lie.
fishing the sea and large saltwater rivers I've learned a few lessons, 2 rods max (more than two is overkill) - a net is a game changer (15 euro to buy) - get and anchor (rope needs to be 3 times the depth - i just purchased a fish finder I'm hoping to test it today
Wendell, love all the info, tips, diy's, kayak safety and everything else, you share. Heading into season two, in my 2020 Hondo Orange Bonafide ss107. Heading into season two of fishing from my kayak. 👍 🙏 🎣 😎
Thanks Boss, after 1.5 years and 150 videos, I'm just not getting subs at a regular pace. Just picked up last month and I'm tracking around 1200 a month now.
This is a great video, but for larger fish like pike, a net is almost a must. It is especially important for pike because they are heavy and are usually very pissed off and like to make fast and jerky movements that can break their jaw if you grip them by it with a fish grip. If you don't want a net or don't have space for one then learning how to grab it by the gill while supporting its belly is a must, or you risk hurting them badly. Just a heads up.
Net makes alot of sense. However, was pe-fishing for Turney once. Allone in my boat. Hooked large smelly on crank bait. Netted, in boat. Then treble hooked fish but also, ( same treble), stuck in finger. Fish kept flopping. (OUCH)😂. (Tiger by the tale). Net was good for getting to boat. But not after. Fish grips, would make more sense, maybe. Yes, pike are a big challenge, even in boat. They seem to always have a bad attitude.
Hi Wendell, love your kayak videos. You recommend the Eyson PFD. Quite a few questions and comments mention it's not USCG certified. How important is it to have this type of certification?
Hey Andrew, everyone is correct and if you want to be safer than sorry I would find one that is USCG certified so you don't get in any trouble with the game wardens. I will no longer be recommending the Eyeson moving forward because of this.
I would reach out to Fishin With Gramps.. he is on their pro staff and would know more about this than I do. He also owns an autopilot @@motodemon-qn9wx
lol... I can't tell you how nostalgic the video store is to me. We had a Family Video next to our house all up until last year when they closed it down.
I got my first kayak in early summer and as usual you begin to scratch it on rocks boat ramp so on. Well you/other talk about a Keel guard on the front ok what would something like a thin layer from front to back of like bed liner covering ? Could a thin covering of whatever all across the bottom work well it will save all that wear an tear?
Hey Michael, I did a lot of research on this and landed on the kydex...Going on 2 years with heavy use and it's help up like a boss. ruclips.net/video/gWgDEaZalbk/видео.html
This video is a game changer for me! I just picked up my first fishing kayak and you answered questions that I didn’t even know I had. Subscribed!

Put a single twist in an unsupported (tight) cargo strap. That will eliminate the vibrating.

Like a seatbelt strapping u to the seat? Lol that’s totally not dangerous at all

Right on Tim

Definitely have to in Texas if you have any kind of motor on it.
