Hi, great question. Getting rabies from bats is actually really really rare! Worldwide, it’s more likely to get rabies from a dog. The only way you could get it is if a wild animal bites you. Never touch an animal on the ground because if it is on the ground, it is more likely to be sick. Most healthy bats flying around do not have rabies because if they are sick with rabies, they die within a week and research shows that they usually don’t pass it on to the other bats in their colonies. Also while bats fly in patterns that look erratic to us, they are actually quite precise flyers (you’d have to be to catch mosquitoes!) so it is unlikely that they would run into you. It’s safe to have bats in your yard. If you ever did somehow touch a bat, go to the hospital immediately and ask for a rabies shot and you will be ok. Dr Merlin Tuttle told me that you’re more likely to be killed by a dog or your spouse, so if you’re brave enough to get married and own a dog, you shouldn’t worry much about bats. It sucks that there's so much silly cultural negative perception of them that has a real impact on how people treat them or think about them... when it just takes a minute of watching them interact with other bats or with people to see clearly and obviously that they are sweet, social mammals which can be just as cute and affectionate as any other fuzzy little forest animal that people think fondly of... it's so unfortunate and silly that this is still a problem.
Very true! But that’s why even telling people little facts like ‘Did you know bats eat mosquitoes?’ Can really help change peoples attitudes and behaviors towards them :) Thanks for your help

channel 13 It does exist today, but only 1-2 people die from it a year in the USA, out of tens of millions. If someone gets bit by any wild animal, they should definitely get a rabies shot. As long as people aren’t handling or coming into direct contact with wild animals, they have little reason to fear. :)
@@planetaustraliachannel Yes but less than 2 percent of all bats at max. On top of that a rabid bat will exclude themselves far from their colony and others and will die quickly and alone after they are infected with rabies. Even sick bats exclude themselves from the colony until they have recovered. Bats are harmless and are highly valuable. You are far more likely to be bitten by a rabid dog, raccoon or cat. A good rule of thumb is do not ever catch or handle bats especially if they are on the ground. Only trained, vaccinated and licensed individuals should have any contact with a bat. Oh and it is a federal offense to kill a bat or destroy their habitats. Automatic felony per bat. The government has ways to find out. Instead put up a bat house or two about fifteen feet high on a post or pole at the back of your property and enjoy being outside at night and not being raided by tons of mosquitoes and other pesky insects.
I love bats...
I came here because there were bats in the house, learnt something will change my perception
Master Roshi @ 3:47 😂
The way God created and designed His earth is amazing.. How He designed it to function and work together in such an amazing way! How brilliant He is!
Anyone in Chicago who could use a hand tackling this important work please let me join the fight with you. So many atrocities need voices and hands to right our wrongs, & many of them have great numbers fighting for them. Bat's do not, I know, I keep looking. I care about this and want to put my work to this.
BladesWillxBleed Thanks so much, I’m glad you care about the bats! :) Two things you can do to help them are to share this video, so more people learn about their importance, and putting up a bat house to give them a safe home! (You can check out BatBnB.com for bat houses)
@@WanderingPathProductions I know. I have the house & encourage everyone to put them up. What I'm referring to is a meaningful way to assist field research in things such as white nose syndrome or tracking feeding patterns. Real boots to the ground work.
BladesWillxBleed Great! We need more people like you! :) Have you heard of the North American Bat monitoring program? www.usgs.gov/centers/fort/science/north-american-bat-monitoring-program-nabat?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects they’re using acoustic acoustic recordings to better quantity bat populations, and I thinkkk they might be accepting help from citizen scientists :) Check it out!
@@WanderingPathProductions Wow, thank you 1000x for that! The site isn't easy to navigate but there's contacts so I'll be on my way with this. Good thing you care to respond to people looking to help. We need more teams like you!
BladesWillxBleed Thanks so much! I’m really glad I was able to help! :) Best of luck moving forward with it! 🦇
Why are quality bat houses So Expensive?! Even the ones that offer very little protection are pretty pricey.
💕 thanks 💕🦇
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it! Please feel free to share it :)
Thank u all
Perhaps we fear what we dont understand
I agree… I think that’s very true
❤
I love bats there amazing creatures and these creatures are not dangerous if you don’t bother you like the saying if you don’t bother it it won’t bother you. There cute too and I wanna protect them and rescue them
sorry but what does she mean with that bats eat ten tons of insect per night ???
Wow that's sad.
A big bat was flying around my basement last night, first time seen inside my Vermont home. Not sure what to do. Now, afraid to enter that space. It flew around the entire basement four times and then, disappeared. Likely hiding in rafters or left thru space it entered. Hmmmm
I’d recommend leaving windows open so it can hopefully get out by itself at night. Keep pets away - cats will try to catch them. Don’t ever touch a wild animal, if you see it again call a wildlife rescue center. :) Hope this helps… MerlinTuttle.org has some good resources as well 👍
Bats are awesome!
I shared this per your request because a. I love bats and b. you didn't mention "global warming".
wow
I love bats.
We have too many people on the planet. We take the habitat away from every other living thing.
❤❤❤❤
Bats are also able to show us our "dark zone" and transform it...

on fruit bats depend thousands and thousands others species
Make bat friendly architecture instead of modernist eyesores
Ive saved alots of Bats in Israel 🇮🇱 especially the species European Free Tailed Bats ( Tadirida Teniotis) in Israel 🇮🇱 we have got about 37 species of Bats the Fruit Bat, and insect eating Bats
That’s awesome! Thanks so much for saving them!
awwww so cute
Well not in Australia
Our native fruit bats are everywhere
Makes me sad that ignorance is what it’s going to be the overall end for a lot of things because people are too stupid and lazy to actually go out and learn.
destroy first ,ask questions later ,ignore the answers….
People owe bats help, and apologies home. Vaccination for bats
I use to think bats were disgusting until I watched this video. I guess I was the jerk all along.🤦♀️
Well I’m glad your opinion on them changed. Bats really are amazing animals
I like bats :)
Save the bats

sorry but it is ridiculous I would ask those people how much in your life you met bat??? perhaps and highly never so I dont understand that fear of bats, lol
Rabies is not a rare disease it exist today doesn't it??
channel 13 It does exist today, but only 1-2 people die from it a year in the USA, out of tens of millions. If someone gets bit by any wild animal, they should definitely get a rabies shot. As long as people aren’t handling or coming into direct contact with wild animals, they have little reason to fear. :)
@@WanderingPathProductions and that is correct
It's a win win for all.
@@shawndubay4050 not talking about Bats just rabies in general
@@planetaustraliachannel oh ok cool. Yeah if I see an animal acting strangely or more aggressive than natural I keep a good distance or go inside if I can and possibly call animal control for my communities safety. Lots of kids, older folks and pets where I live. Gotta be safe.
The bats have to do with disease the same way as chimpanzee has to do with HIV virus mean sarcasm
Talking rubbish
Did the insects get fuel so that’s how you know it was 10tons
