Great video. I’ve been thinking about an early retirement in Vietnam. All the videos I’ve seen about it don’t explain the legal part. Hopefully you’ll still be around in ten years when I’m ready.

Don't need to buy property or Vietnamese passport. I have a friend (swiss nationality) and former UN Interpreter. He has been living in Saigon for 4 years. Only rent a villa at Thao Diên for 1.200 USD and renew the visa every 3 months (70 USD). Doesn't need to leave VN and return each time. My French passport is enough for me. Even if you buy property legally, it is not secured because it could be lost at anytime !Thank you for your Vlog.

This is very True, i have some French friends that owned property legally due to the War laws before VN war. They lived in Lagi which is south of Phan Thiet this past Nov, they where "Ordered" to sell their land back to the gov to build a Vicom shopping mall
      THe options where 2.
      1. Accept money from GOV that was almsot 30% less than real value
      2. Just lose the land no money
Buying land in Vietnam or China is just as safe as putting money in a slot machine hoping for a jackpot. Stick to renting long term, and if anything get an agent to build a work permit for you guys and get a 2 year TRC you can just renew. As of now ONLY Americans can get a Visa past 3 months and with COVID, it is stupidily over priced to renew your visa and you CANNOT, repeat CANNOT leave VN and come back (Visa run) as you will be locked out of VN up to 14 days and this is saying they even let you back in .
Most people locked out where up to 21 days than refused because they just had a long term tourist visa (No value to VN visa in their eyes)

My wife and I retired in Vietnam 🇻🇳 last year. A few tips. Best place to live is in Da Nang for expats. Don't buy property, just rent. Our monthly bills are around $1,200. We own a fuel efficient car, and a scooter. Generally, we like to travel around the Philippines 🇵🇭, Thailand 🇹🇭, and Cambodia 🇰🇭. Vietnam is perfect for getting to those countries, given it is in close proximity. Lastly, it helps to have residual income in the United States to live abroad. We own several rentals in the United States, so our residual income is around $6,500 a month. Given the low living expenses in Vietnam, we have more than enough to travel around and still live in Vietnam.

When you live there, you need to learn to kiss ass. You will be in trouble if your opinion doesn’t align with the government. Keep your mouth shut. For example, you see an 80 years old lady, carrying a large basket of corn selling on the sidewalk. The weather is hot and she looks as if she would collapse anytime. After you see this scene and you might ask, “such a old lady, still working? Should the government take care of you?” I don’t know well but the regime only provides like $10 a month or something. If anyone knows better, please share.

@@powercomm hello John, why all of the hating? Every country has its own problems, we will solve it gradually. If you compare Vietnam right now vs 1980s, we are in the heaven now. The goverment still improving every year with good policies, some evils and some angels. Some people say they fight for democracy in our country but what they did was increasing hatred within the country, they say they fight for our rights (my rights) but I don't need them fight for me (it's just their excuses to make money from donations or mercy from US). Look at the US now, freedom of speech, BLM, LGBTs, Feminism.... too much freedom could destroy you totally. I'm happy with my country right now, lots of things should be improved in the future.

I don’t expect you to fight. It is for you and for the people still live there. America is good compared to Vietnam but it is not so good as you mentioned BLM, etc... I can live well in any society just like those who can live in the poorest countries because I can work and I find things that other people want. However, i care about being fair and how humanity move forward as a planet. I don’t have a good opinion for the society that doesn’t allow freedom of speech. In Vietnam, people are not allowed to express love of their country. For example, Vietnamese fishermen have hard time because they are regularly invaded and harassed by the Chinese regime. Vietnamese people are not allowed to protest against China. Things get worse.

If you were one of those whose parents did not see a future in Vietnam for you, and thus left, I wonder how your parents feel about you living in Vietnam? I had a thought of traveling in Vietnam and stay there for a month or 2. Once I learned that the cruelty the Vietnamese regime treating the south Vietnamese soldiers, I changed my mind and if I do, it would be an insult to them who had fought for my freedom when I was in Vietnam. I solute to the South Vietnamese soldiers who fought the Viet Cong. You might not agree with me but I am sure your parents who ran away from Vietnam would agree with my idea.

Retire in Vietnam looks like a good idea. But do you know that if you have a chronic disease, it is impossible to import specific medicines for your personal use? For example, even you have Imatinib delivered by the NHS, you cannot have them shipped to Vietnam. Because of this, it is impossible to live or work in the long terms in this country.

By other meaning the US forced us into an awkward position either remain as France's colonies or join Communist party gain liberty then get devided by the US in an attempt to stop communism from growing in the Indochina. I want to know how I can regain my Vietnamese citizenship. I was born in Hue back in 1972. My family immigrated to the US in 1975. I haven't been back since, but I hope to retire in Vietnamese in a few years. I live in the DC area, so I think I will consult with the Vietnam Embassy some time. Need to find my birth certificate. I want to start a business and get into real estate in Vietnam when do I retire.

Since the US and Vietnam has a treaty that allows for avoidance of double taxation, as a retiree in Vietnam if I keep up with my US tax filings, do I pay ANY tax to the Vietnam government?
Note that I will have no earned income at all (not working in Vietnam in retirement).

I am an ex entrepreneur and been advising my friends from India and Europe that Vietnam can be a great place to retire or run your freelance business from. However despite the country being incredible haven't figured out a way beyond investment or registering a business ( lots of paperwork and decent money) to do that and retirees don't even have those options. How do people stay legally for a long time?

what is the minimum amount for required investment in company or own business..says cafe or restaurant or retail to get business visa? i am not interested in work visa or working for company in Vietnam; however, i really like the option of business visa. Second, I was told many time, buying a land or home properties is impossible in Vietnam but apartment or condo during my fourth visits there last Feb; however, you have mentioned that buying a land is possible for 50 years lease and optional to renew one time. This is a new thing I've ever heard. I have been to most of the places in Vietnam. My first and second choices are Da Nang and Da Lat. Is it possible to purchase the land there to build a dream home?
