My Dad trained for ww2 at Camp Barkley near Abilene. He said storms would come in from the direction of Lubbock and the rolling rain would be preceded by a dust cloud. I learned in the 90's that people down Abilene way call that event...Lubbock Comin".
I am from Lubbock originally. The large building is the Great Plains Life building. It was twisted in the May 11th Tornado 1970. Lubbockites are spoiled because there are some very excellent restaurants. Nice to see the old turf.
Me and the wife loved the prairie dog town, very cute inhabitants. Lubbock looked very nice. We recently drove around it and the roads are very good. Another great video that showcases the great state of Texas.
I live in Lubbock. Thank you for being favorable. Believe me, we have homeless. I’m surprised that you didn’t see them at intersections begging. Buddy Holly and Mac Davis are buried here. I’m an alumni of Tech, but we also have Lubbock Christian University, a Wayland Baptist University branch and a South Plains College branch. Think our crime rate is high due to gangs and drugs, unfortunately. I really enjoy watching you travel around Texas and the country. Safe travels.
You're pretty sheltered if you believe Lubbock has a lot of homeless. I used to live in Lubbock and by comparison to other Texas cities it would be laughable to call it a problem.
@miltonherron9237 Thank God we're not a lefty/communist city. Rather than moving back home to NY we chose to settle here in Lubbock. We were going to settle in El Paso but my husband got a job with corrections & was assigned in Plainview correctional for training and work.
@@dariusrucker7854 I live here currently, and it IS a problem, not just when it inconveniences people but any time people have no way out of homelessness. Any cornerstore around here at night might have 1 or two sleeping up against the building or any park theres people sleeping on the picnic tables.
Thanks for the tour. The last time I was in Lubbock, I was a teenager visiting relatives with my parents in the 70s. For me, it was a lot more fun being on the farms, hunting, and horseback riding when compared to the city life of California.
Great travel At 8:30 that yellow brick build seen was once Penney's downtown . The tallest building is now living rentals . The next tall near building is now also for retirees. The red bricked streets are depression era WPA builds some detest . There's a Ranching Heritage center at TTU and a WW2 glider museum at the old airport off I- 27 N. you might check next time . Also a windmill museum is in the county . When you travel Texas do you ever see the large wind turbines actually in use ❓️ The ones on e. 50th never turn in Lubbock it seems. 🎯 On south 87 westside there's a venue which has a mighty array of old gas station signage you should cruise to. Godspeed y'all
There is the Silent Wing Warrior museum dedicated to the GLIDER PILOTS of WWII. My dad was one of those pilots and that is how I discovered it. They have an actual WWII GLIDER in the building so you can see what was used before helicopters. My Dad flew one of these gliders on D-DAY. It is located on part f the airport.
I had the opportunity to go inside a WW2 glider at a air show back in the early 2000's. No way in heck would I wanna fly in one of these, much less pilot one. Those were some very brave men.
I notice Bobby Keys is on the walk of fame, a saxophonist and best of friends with Keith Richards. Bobby Keys performed as a member of several horn sections of the 1970s. He appears on albums by the Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Harry Nilsson, Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, George Harrison, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker and other prominent musicians.
I noticed that, too. Somehow, viewing that wall, I feel like it was kind of a failed thing as time wore on. I don't know if guys like Bobby Keys and Joe Ely had a lot to do with Lubbock. I wonder if Townes or Nancy Griffith or Lyle Lovett was on the wall. Anyway, I liked the video.
I'm from Lubbock Lubbock Born and raised. Thank you for shining your spotlight on the city. So many people hate on it who have never even been here. I personally love it because it has everything you need, but it's not difficult to get around, you can't get a new house anywhere else in the state is cheap as you can here, and the people are really nice. For entertainment Texas Tech sporting events provides a ton of entertainment.
A great video Joe & Nic ! The prairie dogs look like they eat very well ! Fat little butter-balls !! Lubbock seems to be a very nice place to visit. I really enjoy watching your videos !! I was really surprised to hear how many students go to the college, too....Safe travels Joe and Nic. P.S. Nic looks good as a redhead ! 😊😊
I grew up there from 1960 to 1972 when I was drafted. I was there for the F-5. Buddy Holly wasn't revered as he is now. My father was the news editor at KDUB/KLBK. I left and never looked back. It's astonishing how much it's grown. Our first house was on the edge of town which is practically in the middle today. Our second house on 64th was next to a cotton field. We would get sand and dust storms with tumbleweeds choking the streets. We bought another house at 2825 46th near College (now University) down from Clapp Park. The house is still there on Google. "Lucky Me I Live in Lubbock" was the motto in the 60s. "Lucky me I'm leaving Lubbock" was the reality. It was a hole back then.
Great video as always. Masterful presentation. Love your angle of perception. The red hair is very becoming. Beautiful Texas woman. Keep up the good work.
I like seeing these old things, murals, houses and buildings. Each one has an interesting story, even more so when it takes place in each city. Thank you Joe and Nicol!!!
I always enjoy delivering to the Walmart neighborhood market in Lubbock, which I always referred to as the prairie dog Walmart since there is a prairie dog town around the store
Waylon was from Littlefield, TX. He was Buddy Holly's friend and bass player; willingly gave up his seat on the fatal plane flight to an infirm Big Bopper so he wouldn't have to take the bus... Waylon's generosity saved his own life.
Thanks for visiting Lubbock. We live 80 miles south of there, in the town where Tanya Tucker was born, and go to Lubbock frequently. I've eaten at the Cap Rock. It's good. No shade thrown, but if you want chicken fried steak and get a chance to go back, go to The Cast Iron Grill. It's across the street from the Buddy Holly Museum. The food is the best and they're known for their chicken fried steak. Try the fried green beans and don't forget dessert. Delicious!
A wonderful video ! The town is lovely and so interesting. The signage on the old Cactus Theatre is gorgeous, and it's great that it's operating again ! The residential area is beautiful with the tree-lined streets, and it was awesome seeing the prairie dogs ! Thank you so much, Joe and Nic, enjoyable as always.😊💚
Lubbock is attractive and appealing until I heard the crime statistics. Glad a cat showed up. lol The prairie dog town is adorable. Any benches to sit on while visiting? I could spend a lot of time there. Joe, I haven't been up long and your meal looked like it would be a great breakfast on this cold, wet day! Nicole, your hair is fabulous! Happy, safe travels. 😻
Love Texas! Lived in Austin when I was little in the 70’s. Nothing but fond memories. I love Nicole’s hair!! I’m a natural strawberry blonde and thinking of brightening it up a bit. Looks beautiful on her! Definitely suits her.
Glad you finally did a video for Lubbock. I do love the small town videos around here, I think you have noticed all of the Quanah Parker Arrows all around that mark specific events from his life. I take my kids on weekends to different arrows and towns. Two days ago I finally took them to Buddy Holly's grave and historical sites. We live in the south of town right on the city limits, so they love it when we get to drive downtown and see stuff since we don't very often.
An excellent Video of Lubbock..Your singing reminded me along with Plaques of all the Great Country & Rock & Roll Singers that have appeared there although I'm sorry to say you are not in the same league..lol..A very interesting Tour of the City & all the Sights & Information you spoke of..Fantastic & delicious looking food as well..I'm sure your Video of Dinner & the Menu makes a lot of your viewers hungry..Nic's Hair color looks great on her...hope she keeps it...Keep on Rollin' Joe & Nicole..lot's of road before you to Travel..
Thank You for your video blog of all your adventures. I live in Austin, Texas... I thoroughly enjoy your informative, narrated history and specific breakdown of each town you visit. That Cactus Theater is truly a thing to behold. As you said: a work of art.
Hey Joe, you two would love the triangle of towns in far W.Texas. Alpine, Marfa and the prettiest town in Texas, Ft. Davis. (Elevation 5050)! Its a ways out there but well worth it.👍
Nice road trip! Lubbock looks awesome. The food looked excellent! Nicole u threw a wave in ur hair, good move! Thanx u guys 4 letting us tag along! Stay safe.
Was in Lubbock in 1974. Training employees at Texas Instruments. Remember the tall building downtown without bricks on one side and empty. They said a tornadoe hit the building and bounced off saving downtown. They fixed the building and reopened. Rained mud one night😂
That tall building is actually still twisted from the tornado. The tornado actually tried to lift it up and sat it back down twisted. My dad went to Tech in the 70's and said there are actually pieces of drapes in between some of the bricks where the walls separated & the drapes flew in-between the bricks and got stuck.
Welcome back Jack's, my new friends giving me a great passenger seat view of America aka Americana of those awesome small town main sreets that younger folks need to see and would have loved cruising the gut as I called it. Young Americans having fun as young men showed off in hot rods , nice cars or just a rusty pick up truck. Kinda like the movie American graffiti. Just sad about the times they are a changing
Hey, happy New Year! Seeing the coming attractions at the Cactus Theater, the act that piqued my curiosity is the "War Hippies" -- interesting name. Looking at their web page I got a chuckle out of how they labeled themselves--not just as a country music duo, but a "lifestyle brand" 🙂 The prairie dog park...kind of an odd "attraction". But, according to the city website, "Of all Nature's wild creatures, none is more appealing and entertaining to watch than the Prairie Dog." I kind of prefer Meerkats, but no accounting for (my) tastes, I always say. Happy trails!
OH, MAN!! Your chicken fried steak meal makes me miss West Texas. Got friends in Lubbock. He teaches at the university. Enjoyed this video. Thanks! ~ Mrs. C.
Love it when you sing 😂 your channel has grown so much! Congrats!! 🎉 your narration and videos are outstanding!! Keep it up! ❤ greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦
Thanks Joey and Nic for a look back at where Johanna and I started our life together. Fond memories of the Hub City. We were married at the Lubbock County Courthouse and enjoyed our wedding dinner at a restraunt downtown in a building you showed. We also had wedding pictures made by Buddy Holly's statue and enjoyed music performa ces at the Cactus Theater. Thanks again.
Hi Joe and Nicole, love your show. I like your story telling style, probably because we grow up about the same time, I.e., graduated high school in 1984 and college in 1988! I did get to travel many cities and states that you video, but not to the extent that you do now. I wonder if you two ever plan to travel abroad and do videos. Southeast Asia comes in mind, especially if you spend $90-$120 a night for hotel, you would get yourself close a luxury hotel room for that price. Food is definitely cheaper and great!
My brother and his wife lived in Wolfforth till they both passed within 6 months of one another some 4 years ago. I have a feeling, although Ronnie was affected by a rare condition, that he died of a broken heart. He loved Linda. She retired from Texas Tech some time back. I stayed there with them during the summer of 2003. She was totally hospitable and accommodating to her brother-in-law and we had a great visit.
I was very impressed with the video you guys made about Columbia, SC and Augusta, GA. I’m partial about these towns because I’ve been a resident of both of these for several decades. I was a little saddened however that you skipped the town of New Ellenton/Aiken, SC, home of the Savannah River nuclear plant, a facility dealing with nuclear waste. These two places have a lot of history behind them and I think your viewers will enjoy. Thanks
Great video! Loved everything about it, including the Prairie Dogs. We have wild turkeys, deer in the Backyard occasionally, crazy geese and stray foxes, at times, where we live. We also have a Roster that Guards the entrance to a goat and chicken farm!! LOL. My wife has been changing her hair so much since she turned 50, I have no idea who she is sometimes, but i am good with it. She has to be her, but I LOVE her free will...It's DIFFERNT. 😵😕😆 Wait until Nicole turns 60..+! LOL. Thanks, Joe. Looking forward to your next video.....both of us! Finally, an affordable dinner!!!! 😁😁
Thank you for showing Prairie Dog Town in this episode! This is something we would like to see where we live. We have to fight in Coloado to save them.
@5:20, that "tallest building" is the tallest building ever to survive a direct hit by an F5 tornado, in May of 1970. The only rose window in the world that can compare to the rose window in Notre Dame cathedral in Paris is in the First Methodist Church, @13:30 the statue of the man on the horse on the Tech campus is Will Rogers on his horse Soapsuds.
Lubbock County,in that court house on Broadway st I was sentence to 60 years!!!it was so funny😅😅😅😅😅😅😅!!!the old jail is there too...the new county jail in out north of 1-27...
My Aunt had surgery at the hospital in Lubbock back in the 60s. My mother went to visit and a tornado hit the city. My mother spent the week working 12 hour shifts volunteering at the hospital.
Mighty fine vid. And I luv the No Graffiti observation! I'm with ya on that. Btw..I'd be amazed, delighted & proud if I could look @ my pr of jeans to see it produced & sewn in North American with homegrown cotton. Can't remember when I have;sadly.
Hellooooo!!!I lived on 4th and Quaker Ave there in Lubbock, but was born in Plainview,40 miles north, you should of came to the sethward area here in Plainview,in Lubbock you should of drove to the Tahoka town....
I didn't hear you mention John Deutschendorf along with Buddy Holly, Mac Davis, Bob Wills, and other fine musicians. John was a student at Texas Tech in the 60s before he came to be known as John Denver. Interestingly Colorado claims him for "Rocky Mountain High' and West Virginia likewise for "Take me home, Country Roads" but he grew up in Texas and went to Texas Tech.
My great aunt and uncle are buried in the same cemetery as Buddy Holly. Their son and daughter-in-law were professors at Texas Tech. I've never been anywhere near Texas myself.
Funny Cat looked at you. Should of brought the Prairie Dog a treat. This town looks good. Chow looked good. Funny I cooked Chicken fried steak yesterday. Nicky's finger nails are fancy Thanks for the video. Good Job
When a kid in 50’s when we went to Lubbock and the Sears store, we would drive round and round looking for a spot to park in! I saw a little kid run across the road in Mackenzie Park and get hit by a car. Kid went flying! Don’t know if hurt bad.
Glad you stopped by the Hub Cityy recently...don't forget the Stubb's monument on Ave. A and Broadway...and places like Bryan's Steakhouse on 50th to eat it...among some of established institutions around here...
I just moved back to San antonio from lubbock, great mid city and plan to go back. You mentioned you didn't see any graffiti or homeless. I will have to disagree with you. You just didn't go to certain parts of the city and there is a huge problem with homeless and addicts near the University. You can find a lot of this on 19th and 34th Ave. There were three shootings, drug related, near the campus this past few months. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
My first thought is remembrance of my uncle and the times in Lubbock that I spent there. 40's ,50's,60's ,my Uncle was Chief of Police for Lubbock. Great video❤
My parents and all of my relatives are from Texas, Lubbock and Wellington. My mother's last name was Barton and my father was Wood, maybe your Uncle knew them. They were farmers in the panhandle area and my father went to WWII in the 40s flying 52 missions in B17 bombers. Happy New Year.
I was born and raised in Lubbock and moved to East, TX in 1996 about 80 miles east of Big D. I left Lubbock because I got tired of all the dirt storms they were depressing, but other than that it was a great place to live. It is a trade off no matter where you go. Now I deal with super high humidity instead of the dry dusty conditions I grew up in. I have now lived slightly longer in East, TX so I guess you could say I am half West, Texan and half East, Texan. East, TX is better though!
Every thing goes better with bacon. lol Great explore interesting city. Heard quite a bit about Lubbock but never been there though. Thanks for sharing and you have a great day and safe travels
Another great video Joe. Still trying to catch up on watching all your vids. Always wonder why they call it chicken fried steak until i googled it. Here down under we have what's call a beef scnitzel which is bread crumbed steak and then deep fried. Then you put any type of toppings/gravies on top or just eat plain.
My Dad trained for ww2 at Camp Barkley near Abilene. He said storms would come in from the direction of Lubbock and the rolling rain would be preceded by a dust cloud. I learned in the 90's that people down Abilene way call that event...Lubbock Comin".
Haha! Never knew that! We here in Lubbock say here comes New Mexico blowing by !!!
Arizona coming over to Texas
The best part of Lubbock is the people. I lived all over the central US and miss those true Texans there. Thanks for the coverage.

Buddy Holly...GREAT!
My oldest friend, new him from his birth in Brownfield passed away in Lubbock 09/2022. RIP old friend. Two weeks short of 71 yr old.
Keep making these videos please! Everything is bigger and better in Texas!!!

We were married at the Lubbock County Courthouse and enjoyed our wedding dinner at a restraunt downtown in a building you showed. We also had wedding pictures made by Buddy Holly's statue and enjoyed music performa ces at the Cactus Theater. Thanks again.
Awesome!
We do plan on going international, hopefully beginning in 2025. :)
Another great video.
Great video! Happy New Year!
Well I've always been interested in Holly's town, and lo and behold you answered the call.
Waylon...The best!
Thanks
I'll put them on the list. :)
I absolutely love chicken fried steak. Plus Buddy Holly & Mac Davis were the best singers back in the day ❤❤❤
Very interesting town Lubbock . Loved the Cactus Theater and the Buddy Holly Plaza . Happy New Year to you and Nicole 🎉
So the Buddy Holly statue a cool factor of 10 !!! I'm going to Lubbock just to eat out DEAL ! I love prairie dogs ❤
Love the hair Nic!!!
I love the Texas videos. I remember we had prairie dogs in ND they were everywhere in town. Anywhere there was a field they had holes dug.
American Blossom sheets are made from organically grown West Texas cotton.
Thank you for your videos! We really enjoy them. We're in Australia - can you take us into a Dollar General? Thanks!
Nicole your hair is very pretty 😍 plus I enjoyed seeing the Prairie Dogs.
im jealous of nicole's new hair she looks elegant❤😘
I was born and raised in Lubbock and moved to East, TX in 1996 about 80 miles east of Big D. I left Lubbock because I got tired of all the dirt storms they were depressing, but other than that it was a great place to live. It is a trade off no matter where you go. Now I deal with super high humidity instead of the dry dusty conditions I grew up in. I have now lived slightly longer in East, TX so I guess you could say I am half West, Texan and half East, Texan. East, TX is better though!
You had me with the CFS. I'm going to have some before the sun sets and I'm dedicating it to you guys!!
You must live in Texas Joe you don’t have to say where but I enjoy theses especially panhandle of Texas
