    Good video about dynamic rollover, Mischa. But you omitted one big factor in getting into it: Yaw. If a skid is stuck and you don't have your yaw trim just right, tail rotor thrust will cause the ship to roll to the right. The T/R is way behind the pivot point, remember, giving it lots of leverage. No amount of left cyclic will stop the roll - only lowering the collective will. Yaw trim is SUPER important when lifting off from sketchy surfaces.

    Good video. Question: is it possible to roll a helicopter over while in flight. While flying a Jet Ranger 206 simulator I attempted a very sharp turn with the intention of backtracking. I wasn't paying attention to the airspeed, which was quite low. I input lots of cyclic to the left, but didn't use much pedal. Suddenly the horizon flipped over and I flew inverted into the "ground". Talk about an unintentional maneuver.

    Hi, interesting difference in instruction philosophy. I had been trained from private through CFI (and trained my own students) to fix dynamic rollover only with down collective, since the net moment of a full cyclic deflection away from the pivot point would still be towards the pivot point once a significant roll has started. I had always thought of/taught static rollover as pertaining to when the blades were stopped, not as separate phase of the 'dynamic rollover' process. Considering how fast a roll can happen with a newer student who might be too eager with collective on takeoff, I feel safer having them immediately lower collective rather than take the millisecond to judge wether the angle is too extreme for a recovery with the cyclic.

    • @venkyvenkatesh999
      @venkyvenkatesh999 5 лет назад

      You are absolutely correct. Static rollover happens without aerodynamic forces, when rotors stopped and typically while jacking up one side. Here the rollover happens after the CG goes out of the wheels.
      Dynamic rollover tip over point is far much earlier

      Down collective is the only remedy, unless full power n up collective can pull you up immediately, opposite cyclic won't help

    I know weight is always the enemy, but I wonder with modern lightweight 'chip' cameras, if it would be possible for manufacturers to put a cam lens in the front curve of the tailboom, integrated into the PFD (in the case of the Cabri), which would provide a view of the skids during takeoff/landing. It's one area that has zero visibility. The interface would be a challenge to find room in the PFD, certainly, but pilots who do frequent off-field landings on complex surfaces might consider it a desirable option. I thought your story was great and I'm sure it will help a pilot who never thought of snagging something like that!

    • @chriseaves9762
      @chriseaves9762 7 лет назад +2

      That's a cool idea. It would be nice to have a down/rearward view from underneath the cabin. Basically the same view as a backup camera in most cars these days. Would also give you a view of obstacles behind you that could interfere with your tail rotor.

  • @venkyvenkatesh999
    @venkyvenkatesh999 5 лет назад

    Hi there. It was a nice explanation. However, many other conditions can lead to dynamic rollover, such as drifting sideways while pick up or sit dow. Strong especially gusty beam winds exceeding transition speed of the helicopter can induce serious dynamic rollover, which is lot more complicated to recover from. Once the roll over sets in the rate of roll can exceed the lateral control power of the cyclic, rendering recovery with cyclic impossible.
    And most important to study the tipping forces and moments and restoring forces and moments.
    Incidentally, rotor thrust forms major part of tipping force and hence should never try to lift off once the rollover starts.
    Weight is major restoring force and hence lowering collective restores the helicopter from the impending rollover

  • @supermarioisacat

    Another thing that helps is not flying Robinson's which all have that dorky looking, super long main rotor shaft that raises it's overall CG making the roll much quicker if a skid sticks.

    • @tristanwalker4020
      @tristanwalker4020 5 лет назад

      A turbine engine above the cabin has a higher cg than the Robinson’s low mounted piston engine. The reason for the long mast is to prevent the main rotor from striking the tail boom. Take a look at a 206 and visualize it with the rotors in the same spot and without the engine compartment, the the mast would look equally long.

    What is the difference between static vs dynamic rollover?

    • @ganthrithor
      @ganthrithor 6 лет назад

      It's the difference between falling over and being pulled over by main rotor thrust. For any helicopter, there's a limit to how far you can tilt the rotor disc relative to the fuselage by using the cyclic. If the cabin begins to roll (because of CG or because part of the heli is pinned to the ground), you can initially use cylic inputs to keep the disc level with the horizon, and thus pulling the helicopter straight up off the ground. If the cabin tilt angle exceeds the maximum cyclic throw (you run out of stick), the rotor becomes tilted with respect to the horizon and you end up with the rotor thrust pulling up and to the side; since the helicopter can't go up (it's stuck on something) only the sideward component manifests itself and the helicopter gets yanked over onto its side. The only way you can stop the rollover once you run out of cyclic is to take the thrust away by lowering the collective.

      @ChavzRo,
      It's like anything, it's only as dangerous as you make it.
      Keep your wits about you, watch what the aircraft is doing and what the instrumentation is telling you.
      Early hours, solo pilots (like myself) have a habit of not having a lot of situational awareness, you learn quick or don't get to.

    • @rovers141
      @rovers141 3 года назад +2

      I've heard pilots who are both fixed wing and rotary certified say that the real difference between planes and helicopters is that planes want to fly, helicopters don't. Helicopters will fight you every step of the way and you have to beat them into submission just to get off the ground. 🤣
