- Neil Tyson at the beginning of this video talks about how (due to the genetic diversity of Africa), the continent is home to the smartest (also dumbest) people in the world.
His statement is the first 3 minutes of the video while my commentary covers the remaining 12 minutes

With concern to Africa, another thing that strongly contributes to negativity dominance is the conscious focus on negative stories from Africa by Western media. It's only purpose is to feed that negativity bias. It affects both those outside of Africa and those within Africa.
Western media propaganda does the same to asia too.

The story at the end, was so inspiring. As a black man in US, I had a similar experience with my family my last year in college. I feel alone in US sometimes but this video makes me feel apart of something bigger.

I think the negative bias is a survival strategy. When things are good, you don't have to think about it. But when it's bad, you have to address it. So It's obvious to think about the bad stuff more
I saved this video in my "History" section not just as an educational tool but to remind myself when I walk around with my head high and my cofidence showing and something says 'she thinks she's all that", I can smile and say "I am".

6:00 I did a study on this in college and wrote about how easy it is for people to accept negativity due to the will to improve one's self. He is exactly right.
Yes this is exactly how I see it as well. We see the negative things as a way of teaching ourselves and counterbalancing ourselves. There are competence people that say winning doesn’t mean much, it’s your losses that will force you to improve, which is why strong players seek out other strong players… to challenge themselves and get better. Also, negative things have a habit of having more impact on your life than positive ones:
You drive to work successfully… you get to do a day of work and get paid.
You drive to work unsuccessfully, this means your car broke down or was in an accident, or at the very least you lose a days wage. If you are living check to check, that days wage could be the difference between paying rent or not whereas still getting paid just means that you are still getting by. So there are lots of reasons for negativity bias.
People get comfortable and stop trying to challenge themselves to improve. Learning is a lifelong process and being open to new ideas is the best way to learn new things. Our Creator made each of us with various strengths and weaknesses. Not everyone will be a rocket scientist or an Albert Einstein but we are all supposed to work together for the improvement of all lives here. Too many people are too self centered to understand that we all do better when everyone prospers.

As those who claim connection to the "CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION," we are duty bound to cultivate ourselves to be our best versions of ourselves at any given time, in order to set the best examples for the other Humans to follow our best and most virtuous examples, to ensure Human progress and Human endeavor.
Continued evolution is what has been lacking in humanity of late. Talk of "revolution" is folly. None have been adequate enough to counteract the ills of humanity. Talk of a "reset" because of the pandemic and global warming is also folly, as no previous state of our existence has ever been adequate. humanity is due reparations for humanity’s historic inhumanity to itself. A fair/just global economic system would be reparations for the world.
In the 90's former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and former U.S. President George H.W. Bush proposed the nations of the world give themselves a 'peace dividend' by drastically cutting their military spending and using the funds to help develop their people and countries. This was of course rejected, but the idea is still the sensible and right thing to do.
I have been saying this is what is needed by the U.S. on the domestic level at the least. We don't need other countries' cooperation to do this domestically. The level of violence and crime in general is costly. To rebuild from the increasing destruction of storms and other natural disasters and rebuild the infrastructure is costly enough. That was even before the pandemic. We surely need it now.
I don't get the selective idealism of Democrats and the Left in general in the U.S.. We only appeal to the government with idealism and not the people themselves. We don't seem to ask anything of them other than to vote and significant numbers of people eligible to vote - don't.
There is a needed void of constructive leadership in the world today and Africa is most in need of the fruits that a constructive world leadership could offer. They should fill this obvious void, as they have the most to gain.
It applies to all humans, but inevitably the result of all of us becoming better will be that more Africans rise to positions of influence. I am interested in Africa because I want a world where no one is able to dominate anyone else, and I think a world like this is only possible if my home country and other westerners allow Africa (and also South America) to have a leadership role.
I'm glad I found this, so I can I show my daughter. She wants to know why people hate black people. I told her it's not our problem. They told a false history that the world believed, but now it's being corrected.

I wonder about this research of Negative Bias. In my view, it is a learned behavior, we are not born negative ( or with original sin for that matter). We are taught that from our environment. If we have educating systems designed by Europeans that Negative Bias is imbedded. Even here in the US, we have to have a month dedicated to Black History in order for it to become part of the curriculum. That is why white folks are so ignorant about our history along with African Americans. Even world history classes are biased towards the advent of the European and their civilizations they built. You never hear about any other civilizations until you got to college and study archeology or anthropology. In many African countries, the educational systems do not allow the students to speak their native tongue. They speak the language of the colonizers. Why is that?

Never heard of hating on Nigerans? In my part of the world it’s the northern Africans that are considered trouble makers. Nigerians are considered smart hardworking people, mostly highly educated.

A very important and informative video. Second time of listening to you. I am subscribing immediately. I love it! I have always seen the positivity in Africa. I have always believed in Africa being able to produce people who are smart enough to liberate, serve and lead its people. Imagine if someone gave this message to a child in under the age of 10 in Africa? It could lead to a chain reaction that is used as a catalyst for a tsunami of positivity, progress and change that can improve all aspects of African lives and balance out the negativity until it’s barely noticeable and all Africans live an happy life. You can motivate and inspire all the people in Africa you want, but if some leaders get into power that disrupt the interests of America or any other powerful nation, those leaders will be removed from power and corrupt leaders put in their place. Through espionage, coups, and war, these things will effect countries and economies far more than ideas or extraordinary individuals.
It's important to know that we are driven by how we see ourselves not by how we are seen by others. This is important for how we use our education system to enhance our intrinsic qualities. Europeans fear our Black Power. They have hit us hard a lot of times. Yet we still rise.

Because we are shamed or punished from very young ages, at home or at school, it really seems like this creates negative bias. I’m still studying this and appreciate your perspective.
Once convinced Africans are less than, and it’s repeated regularly though what we learn in schools, through media, via other people who are also manipulated by this story + add fear because of African genius, abilities, and resiliency, racists aka power structures, bare down harder. We see that in replacement of Africans in history, particularly in Christian media; in history, or the removal of real history today in our schools.

But to most of us that are thinkers he has presented nothing new. It should be obvious to us all. That's what amazes me. Those that never thought of it
I’m black and though I agree the highest genetic diversity is in Africa, I don’t think the smartest or the dumbest people are in Africa right now. I mean there are things called genetic environmental determinants that involve physical, social/cultural effects on genes as well as epigenetics and how those environmental pressures can lead to methylation of cpg islands and acetylation of histones. There’s also the XIST gene’s role in imprinting that almost completely silence a set of chromosomes either from the mother or father or a mixture of the two. There is really no “Smart” or “dumb” gene it’s just about how your genes are allowed to express themselves given the environment, the random imprinting of your chromosomes and the choices you make about the environment that further reinforce your alignment or disposition genetically.
So sure, more genetic diversity would lead to more potential I guess, however, but that doesn’t mean that just because they’re genetically diverse, that they’d naturally be smart. It takes probably most of the breadth of African inhabitants to be enrolled in a different system, all fighting for the same thing to see if anything interesting happens.

This video reminds me of why I have a hate/love relationship with reading youtube comments. I could find a video profound, most enjoyable or mind changing then I scroll down to the comments to find out if other viewers feel the same. In most cases, they do but then they're always those one or two negative comments and they ruin that positive space I was in. I disregard the positive and begin to over think the negative. I hope to do and be better from now on. 🙂

Even you, Steve, have shown some bias in this presentation: you use a white tick for positivity and a black tick for negativity reinforcing the stereotype that everything black is bad; you also use the word 'probably' when referring to blacks being the most beautiful, but left it out when referring to blacks being the ugliest. Inferencing that it's a given that blacks are the ugliest, but 'probably' not the most beautiful. I know you did it unconsciously, but you did show bias there!

It's more than negativity bias at play here. Africans are almost exclusively viewed through a negative lens while at the same time Europeans are viewed through a positive lens. It's learned group bias...and we all suffer from it because we have all been socialized within it. Given that it doesn't matter how many hyper beautiful tall and intelligent Africans there are, the world will still instinctively look right past their existence in favor of their bias

The two flaws in what he is saying are that the groups that left Africa interbred with other hominid species which added new genetics and they had to adapt to new environments and conditions which forced the evolution of traits which best suited the new conditions. There is a lot of genetic diversity within Africa, but they are also missing a lot of genetics available to groups that left.
Still, a lot of what he is suggesting is basically correct, it's just that his argument is flawed because it is so narrow minded. His argument was at the level of a middle schooler, not a renowned professor, but that's what happens when he talkes about things outside of his area.
The only thing African countries need in order to prosper now is for the education level to increase to the point they stop voting for incredibly corrupt governments.
