A tip if you're experiencing thermal throttling in a laptop is to open it up completely and change the thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink, it's usually dry as a desert since the manufacturers use a really cheap one and fucks up the cooling rather than help it.
After I changed the thermal paste on a friends' laptop the temperatures went down by 30C on average and he could start using it again :)
0:44 Linus going full ElectroBoom.
WOW you do this video literally the day after I submit my assignment on thermal throttling. I actually referenced 2:04 of your TDP video
@@SwoopScoopie lol it's been 6 years. I'm pretty sure they'd probably not remember. If they do, I'd like to know tho.
I just realised, the first letters of "Fast As Possible" in the begging are bold. What happens when you put them side to side? FAP. Well played Linus.
He goes even further by giving us A FAP episode each week...
File-systems (NTFS, EXT4, FAT32 etc...) would be nice.
Eric Slattery Yeah, Windows file-systems are really lacking compared to file-systems available under Linux.
Eric Slattery Transferring files on Linux is night and day compared to Windows, on Windows transferring 1GB takes about 30 minutes, on Linux I'd be done it 5. As for your issue what I would do is have another drive setup as NTFS, copy the files to that drive and then your Windows drive.
Eric Slattery I found somewhere a driver compatible for windows 8.1 to transfer files from ext partitions but it's very bad because there are no tools to read encrypted home like in ubuntu or sometimes it doesn't show the contents at all
Eric Slattery My guess would be EXT4 is new and NTFS is old. Newer technology is better than old technology. Microsoft have updated NTFS but what they really need to do is completely redesign it, there are so many advantages to EXT4, BTRFS etc... over NTFS
GhostMotleyXT I don't think newer tech is always better. For example I still use a Phenom II cpu cause I think it's better than the FX series :)
Windows devices without active coolers (like super-thin laptops, tablets, phones) may also reduce screen backlight level to cool the device and may decide to slow down or disable entirely battery charging for some time to cool it. So the CPU and GPU thermal throttling is not the only technique used by Windows devices.
a video about MOSFETS, Diodes, capacitors & many many more
OR a video about: wattage, voltage, resistance & others.
please ;-;
yes please!! to many people have no idea about those
I would recommend you Linus do a tech quickie about air heat coolers vs watercooling systems. That would be interesting to see, having in consideration that even if watercooling is best, for some of us give us a pour trust about the watercooling system itself, that it might have leaks, although we know that are built to prevent such type of failure.
I think it would be more pleasing in 60fps.
if i tape icecube to cpu cann it run max setting on any game????//??

yeah but isnt Liquid Nitrogen like 5 grand a secound ?
Don't forget tooth paste. Spread it across ur cpu using credit card.

Why did the CPU crash?
It didn't slow down for the T junction.
huh?huh???
no? ok...
Ha! How I appreciate comedy.
Only few people get the joke.
When you said at the end, "rather than allowing your device to shutdown"
Describes my laptop.
Can Linus do a as Fast as possible about port forwarding. Please thumbs up this so linus can see.
Thoroughly enjoying your videos guys. Keep it up
I accidentally mounted my cold-plate on to the capacitors next to the CPU socket for 1 month; leaving only 1/4 of the IHS in contact with the thermal paste. I only noticed this when I launched a full system scan, and saw the temps rise to 78'C. I REALLY have to thank this feature such that I didn't burn out a $300 CPU in a month.

It's okay that you think shutterstock is cool and everything, but you've been going overboard with the pictures lately imo. It looks kinda silly actually.
Yea true.
nah... I like it.
yeah but guud silly :)
I agree, way too many unrelevant images. Makes the video longer than it needs to be.
p1lzsuppe Um... It doesn't increase the length of the video at all... Since he's still TALKING in the background. Remove the images and suddenly we see linus still talking. Now stop derping out.
I thought that was one of your better transition Nick did a fine job
What about a TechQuickie based around the difference between desktop vs. mobile components (such as CPUs or GPUs)?
What smart watch are you wearing
first time i heard of that term was when i was researching the surface pro 3

Speaking of temperatures, here is a suggestion to a future episode. IHS removal or delid of haswell and ivy bridge cpus, does it actually work? I have read that some cpus gets 30 degrees cooler. If that is the case, why did Intel build the cpus this way? I find it hard to believe that a regular person can achieve this that easily, because Intel obviously knows how to make a cpu.
It does work, though 30 degrees is on the high side of what you can expect to gain. Intel was probably saving a bit of money, and it didn't really matter to them since CPUs were still fine at stock clocks.
Sakkura1 It is a good theory, but this "problem" is also the case on the -k series ivy bridge and haswell. This is a line about the k series on intel.com "the -K series desktop boards and processors designed for overclocking to provide optimal performance for gamers and high-power users.". Therefore, it should matter to them that the temperatures is ok on clocks a bit over the stock. Do you agree?
Mosern
No. They don't really care too much whether the chips overclock well. It's a pretty small segment.
I knew this and never had explanation about it. Idk why but i thought it was common knowledge of knowing what it is.
all i thought when he was advertising for lynda was "go check out my mixtape" lol
so can someone tell me if its bad that when i play r6 i get super high cpu/gpu percentages, and what happens if i dont fix it
also how to fix it
Sweet 2 stroke MX sound bite
cmon should have explained how it works instead of using memes 90% of the video
If you don't plan on "over clocking" your CPU or APU, should you stick with a stock cooler, or would buying a bigger heat-sink like a "Noctua" be more efficient and beneficial to your computer's performance? Also would the performance difference be even worth it to shell out money for an expensive heat-sink?
If you want to overclock, you're definitely going to need an aftermarket cooler. That said you don't have to spend $300 on it. Hyper 212 Evo is popular, cheap and performs greatly. The performance difference after OC depends on the processor but will probably be worth it, especially if you're not running some $500 processor.
hey just so you know this set off the twitter dangerous site warning.

oonf. I beat your comment, bro.
@@Darkerxz after 5 years you still beat his comment
I had an iPod touch that would always get hot and would crash when trying to load a RUclips video
I need to read more up on this as I am in the near future going to overclock my GTX 670 and GTX 760 again and don't want to do it and then have the cards get throttled. What is the point of an OC if it gets throttled over and over again? :)
My Dell XPS had this problem. 2.5 GHz processor will under clock to .75ghz when encoding video etc. But few months ago Deep Cool Z5 saved my life. I removed fan and apply new thermal past... Wohh now I have no issue like that... This comment may save some people ;)
I think mobiles and laptop suffers more from this than PC since PCs have more open spaces and cooling. I own a g74sx and once dust builds up in the intakes I can see a significant performance decrease and irregular fps... Thanks for the knowledge :)
It's worse for laptops compared to smartphones
Processors are made of semiconductors (sillicon) right. And these semiconductors show increase in conductivity with rise in temprature (unlike metal conductors) right. So wouldn't it be increased performance with some increase in temprature (not too high temp ,so as to burn components ) ?
Is rise of pc components due to the Eddy current or what else is the reason?
What would be good temp to operate cpu and overall pc?
Thanks in advance ,for explanation .
Please do file systems!! FAT32, NTFS, journals...
Is there some video where explain whats the difference between bits and bytes ?
When grandpa has a stroke and his vehicle throttles up. It's happened before, it took down some buildings back in '01
1 frequency and 1 frequency only? so how did the turbo button on 486's work then?
is it worth fixing my throttle problem with my gpu by getting a better case?
Hi Linus thanks for your videos i liket it all :) I have A Question. Why motherbord makers and intel changen soo many times they sockets?Imean i use socket 775,1150,1155 etc and now i really dont know animore.why soo many?thanks in advance
i put my laptop in the campfire its still thermal throttling
I have a laptop that constantly turns off and is seemingly cool ive cleaned it multiple times and always check for updates and it continues to do it but only under medium to high loads and clues on how i could fix it ??
check the thermal paste on the heat sink. it my have dried.
At what temperature do modern cpus throttle? What temperature should I set for my AIO fans to run at 100%? 80°c?
Depending on what device you are on generally 95 is just it try using msi after burner to see at what point your cpu gives up and throttles. And that's the temp u should be avoiding
Y50. i7 4710HQ runs on turbo for a few seconds, then it throttles to 2.4 after reaching 60 degree c.
The only reason I clicked on this video is because of the image I know perfectly what thermal throttling is but I might as well watch it now.
witnessed that only a few days ago when i did a classic school boy error
"upgraded" my laptop cpu from a pentium b940 to a pentium b960 and noticed something odd. i noticed that just browsing the web would cause the cpu fan to max out and what was more weird the air coming out was cold, so thinking that the heatsink wasent fitted properly decided to tear the laptop apart and re-fit the cooler. what i also did was scrape off any old thermal paste off both the cpu and heatsink and turned it back on (after putting it back together of coarse) went back into windows 10 installed HW monitor and monitored temps. at idle it was 58'c, decided to run cinebench to check load temps and thats when i noticed it, reached 80'c and it then throttled from 2.2GHz to 700MHz but temps was still rising. eventually temps reached 85'c and the laptop just turn it self off. it was at that point i then re opened it and applied some cheap thermal paste (which i borrowed from a friend because i didnt have any at the time, now temps at idle are 35'c and under load top out at about 58'c - 60'c.
what i learned is no matter what cpu swap you do, make sure to clear the old thermal paste and re apply some fresh paste
I would like to know if thermal throttling is even legal because when your phone/pc you are advertised its max speeds. You dont expect lower.
Yes it is legal you prune, modern devices ARE designed to throttle speed and performance when the inside becomes too hot
Can dust cause thermal throttling
I was watching Linus video on the Surface 2 and had to come to Techquickie when he mentioned the Macbook Pro 2017 thermal throttled
I used to have an old Acer Aspire 5750G. It had an i3 2330M and GT 540M, however, the i3 2330M in most cases can only handle up to 85C max temps before forcing a shutdown from overheating. When I gamed with it however it always climbed to 80C, even when I went as far as to sport a desk fan to keep it cool and replace the thermal paste. I've since upgraded to a Clevo W650SJ with an i5 4210M and GTX 850M, both which keep at 60-65C when gaming with the laptop fan at full speed. :3
Not only that, the fan never responded enough...
My Celeron 1007u can handle 95c while playing GTA iv
Thermal throttling is the last thing people would check, if its the first time they are actually gona go for a laptop. Btw im gonna do more testing to see what is wrong. i miight as well try that after burner and check if it reveals anything interesting.
Why does Ryzen Master power deviation showing up to 300% difference on idle for R5 5600x and ~100% in 100% load? B550m phantom gaming 4.
Hi I'm planning a PC I'm wondering what motherboard that is not to expensive should I use for my and fx 8350
Can someone help
GPU r9 270x
im using ga-970a-ds3p and my voltage is terrible like when i oc and run prime its lowers down like 1.332 to 1,260 and it stays at 1,260 and i fail prime does cooling vrm helps keeping voltage the same
How do phones cool themselves if they don't have fans? Does it just dissipate out?
Yup, there's a heatsink on the CPU which id designed to handle that precise amount of heat without fans.
T hat is called "passive cooling" and can also be found on graphics cards with a low TDP like the GTX 750 Ti.
passively cool low end hardware that doesn't output much heat. That's a phone's internal in a nutshell. A PC is MUCH more powerful than any phone on the market, thus output more heat.
also some phones are specifically designed to dissipate heat from their front (screen and digitizer) and back. so the heat sink is really connected to the chassis of the phone and thus can dissipate the heat from every side and way.
Phones have a lower heat output.
s8 and s8+ and also s7 and s7 edge from samsung uses vapor chamber cooling
So if you have a GPU that's playing a game at 100% capacity, with 155 frames per second, then you experience a sudden frame dip to less than 30, is that from thermal throttling?
Thank you Linus for giving us a FAP episode every week.
A friend of mine had his CPU melt through his motherboard. I don't remember what it was exactly, but I think it was at the end of the nineties.
smörgåsbord is awezome!
Hello LMG,
Would it possible to request for a Fas as Possible topic about GPU BIOS. Like, what is its purpose and role in the PC or is it really necessary to change or update the GPU BIOS from stock version? Something like that. Thank you.
You mean Fast
You should said '' refers to when the device performance slows down to keep itself from overheating to death'' and then continue with more info if people interested.
this seems obvious.
Anyone know how to safely use throttlestop on an i7. I have the lamborgini VX7 (uncle gave it to me, I would never buy such a ridiculous thing) and there is SERIOUS thermal throttling with the i7. It's a 2.2ghz with 2.9~8 turbo. It throttles down to ~900mhz all the time. I cant run CSO at low resolution min settings without lag. It has a 560m so that can definitely handle CSGO. Please help me. I've tried other peoples settings but it gets to 98 degrees and I don't feel safe at that temp. Can someone please tell me some settings or tweaks so I can use it as a secondary to my gaming rig?
A little off-topic: I need to learn (relatively quickly) some Zbrush and Maya, has anyone used Lynda for these apps and is it any good for this type of software?
I learned 3ds Max, Cinema 4D and a little Zbrush from www.3dartistonline.com/ and from watching basic user interface videos on youtube.
Good luck bro!
Thanks man, I'll check it out!
Awesome videos!
So if the computer does shout down to save itself, what should I do?
You would need to let it totally cool down before powering it back on
I've seen you make an fps test on a non-gamer to see if he could notice the difference between 60 and a 120 fps. Now I've come across the term hertz on my screen's where as they could only do it at 60. Could you explain the differences between the hertz and frames per second terms?
A 60 Hz monitor show images at 60 times per second, so it can only play up to 60 fps content (it can play higher, but what you will see well be at 60)
So, Hz = the frequency at which the monitor can display images, fps = frequency at which the content is being shown at
Right now my laptop is roasting my legs at a good temp of 201 degrees farenheit :D (not lying one bit)
You should have made it: 'Speaking of saving yourself'
how to permanently disable thermal throttling on cpu? on my pc there is no bios option, my pc has Windows 10.

hey, Linus i wondered if you could reply to this that would be awesome!!. so i have a 970a-g43 mobo fx 8350, gtx 970 1tb hdd 8gb ram 600w psu. at 1080p gaming, when building this i was so confident it was going to Max out all games without Vsync, hairworks etc.. But then after a while i experienced frame drops down to 20 fps on cs:go, running far cry 3 at 60-20fps mostly 34fps, and the witcher 3 running at 60 - 20fps and the witcher 3 drops happend when not alot was happening. Some have Said its my motherboard that cant run a 125 w cpu if its that then tell me and please leave a recommendation for the best bang for the buck around 80 dollar mobo for my fx 8350 if its something Else with my pc then please also tell me. Oh and also i bought used cpu used 970a-g43 and ram in a bundle and used gtx 970 and a "New" shitty bitfenix nova case and its the msi gtx 970 with 1 fan. Please help man
***** I'm using hyper 212 evo
I think so too thanks
No mention of the current p-States solution. Out of scoping it was probably for the best.
Is it normal for a system to throttle when the system has its turbo disabled? It starts throttling at 70 to 75 degrees
At 75 Celsius which is a very toasty temperature yes any device that gets that hot WILL slow its speed quite a bit
How to recovery 0.80 ghz to 3.70 ghz???

Hey guys i got amd fx 6300, i got 20% cpu usage when im not doing anything. That's wierd, it's staying at 20% wierd when i play games still 20%.. Help please
my i7 4790K went from
4.7GHZ to 3.1GHZ.
how to i get it back to stock clock 4.0ghz
+PC Gaming & Tutorials Get a better heatsink like a Noctua, or get a better case that will allow for more airflow.
I still don't understand-- AM I DUMB?
A friend of mine had a gateway laptop that just had a terribly designed cooling system and throttled itself every time he tried running a game.
When the pump in my Corsair H60 failed, my AMD FX-8350 just shut off the whole system with 0 thermal throttling. It made it hard to find the issue especially since this is my first rig
Who's Nick?
Anyone experiencing Thermal Throttling and wants to minimize it can try underclocking its cpu.
Do it at your OWN RISK and only if you know what you're doing.
there is a reason why i glued an heat sink to my phone, yes it works and its amazing
please linus 60fps :)
Hey could I cook a egg on my I7-4770k
Really a have a serious gas problem???😋
Hey guys, i have an amd fx 8370 with the neew wraith cooler and had a quick question on thermal margins. so recently only in battlefield 1 my fps went from 70 to 30 for a couple seconds and it concerned me so i looked at the thermal margins with amd overdrive and its at 25c full load in bf1 and then all the sudden the amrgin goes to -100c and the framerate dips happen, im so confused can anyone help!?
Zachery Talbett Your temp monitor is screwed
Zachery Talbett which can lead to bad throttling
"One frequency only" Someone is forgetting about the "Turbo" button. I had a Turbo button on my 386.
Well, I have my laptop for 2, almost 3 years now, and while it's not an ultra thin one, it does suffer from TT for a few months now. Recently, it even has started to do the most extreme: shutting down. Now, my laptop wasn't filled with dust, the cooling system worked optimal and the usage has not really changed over the years. But we have found out that the cooling technology in it is aged and does not completely cover the high-end i7 4th gen quad cpu at 2.5 to 3.3 GHz.
I'm genuinely shocked to find this out, especially since it wasn't really a cheap pc either (950 $ or 800 €).
I also won't bother applying new paste on it or so, since I've been thinking for a while now to build a custom pc myself now.
just buy some diamond paste. It cuts the heat by 50%...
I have a 6 year old gaming computer. That what I did to keep it running. Look at some of my videos.
1 wonderfuldeals.com I do not think that it would make much of a difference, since there's not even a heatsink. It's a heatpipe connected directly against the cpu.
I can't see it from here. But it sound like the heat pipe does not work. Maybe bent? It is better for heat transfer... that the heat pipe directly touching. But if it is bent or not completely smooth. Then thermo Diamond past is best.
Maybe put it upto a piece of glass or mirror.
Then you know.
So that means Throttle Stop (a software by TechStop) is safe.
1:27 i dont think the kindle fire hd does, its why its called the "fire"
Instead of having this mechanism , we should have devices that DON'T get hot
well you live in this world, not that one, or would you like phones that are water cooled or have a huge ass heat sink on them?
Heat is generated because of Inefficiency. Energy that isn't used in order to complete the task at hand is turned into heat. There's no real way around this. You can lower the amount of heat output to a point, but you can never truly eliminate it. Think of a car's engine. You know how that heats up too? Well, that's because of inefficiency as well. ;)
Noone would want them.because they would be pretty much uselessly slow to not produce much or any heat.
How exactly do you propose to make a device that doesnt produce heat?
You do realize loads of low power components still add up and create heat. If you had 5, 5W chips. It produces about same amount of heat as a 25W chip. With variance coming from manufacturing differences.
Please do one about cluster sizes on storage devices.
Nick called out right in the video lmao
Sounds hilarious if you skip to 0:06 and play at .5 speed!
"Thermal throttling is, unfortunately, not nearly as cool as it sounds."
I get it :P
as COOL
LINUS I DIE TO SEE 60FPS AS FAST AS POSSIBLES!!!
So we need ice case's for r phones to keep them running fast
Actually some AMD desktop APU use active thermal throttling to maximize the GPU speed.
