I live in a house built in the early 70s and used to become frustrated in the lack of closet space and storage. But I then realized that folks in the 70s has SO MUCH LESS STUFF and didn’t need crazy amounts of closet space to store it all. That’s how they stayed organized and why everything had a place. So, I’m working on it little by little, and also working on using up what I have before I buy new, which is a difficult habit to break, but I’m determined to be better!

My house is also built in the 70s so when I visited friends houses with homes built in the 90s or early 2000s I was always amazed that they were like mansions. I think the 70s split entry sized home is a comfortably large living arrangement for a 4-5 person family or 4 ppl and a pet or two if you are efficient with your inventory and furniture. However my family's main gripe is the homes were not built with a good floorplan flow in the kitchen especially and the single paned windows are not energy efficient. But yeah my closet space is already capsule wardrobe sized, and for any off season clothes, I keep in my dresser drawers.

It´s really easy to get carried away with decluttering. I think a lot of people go and watch videos about minimalism on RUclips and get this idea that if they don´t get rid of everything that they don´t *need*, then they´ll never be happy... and then they end up with an empty living space with no charm or personality. It´s okay to have things that you just *want*. There´s definitely nothing wrong with decluttering things that you don´t need OR want, but I think it´s really easy to get sucked into someone elses´ idea of a comfortable living space/way of life

This is so true. I've always had an affinity for hour glasses ever since I watched wizard of Oz as a kid. I have this 30 minute timer with turquoise sand and I love it because it's just so aesthetically pleasing and makes a nice quiet sand sound. It's perfect for meditation and nobody really needs a sand timer in the digital age, but I just think it's cool.

I don't think minimalism and comfortable are mutually exclusive. You can have minimal items in your home and still have a very comfortable living space.
I think what should be included in "minimalist" videos is the idea of intentional living. If you are intentional in the content of your home, intentional in how you decorate--not just put a table at the end of a couch because that's where end tables go, even though no one uses it and it collects dust and clutter--then I feel you tend to gravitate toward a minimalesque lifestyle.
Minimalist lifestyles aren't about deprivation and living with less isn't about living without.

@@ionelafessler5564 You don't want your space to be special and yours? It's your home, the place to relax and live in. Removing every single thing from your house just because everyone else does it, doesn't really make it special.

But for others it might be easier the other way around and to start easy and with lesser pressure 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's a lot larger than a traditional capsule but my whole wardrobe consists of only certain colors so everything goes together. The colors I chose are black, white, navy, gray, olive, burgendy, and mustard. It makes it a lot easier to get dressed in the morning cause I love everything I own!

I'm doing this challenge for February! I also recently used the Konmarie method on my closet, and I have to tell you, the folding technique she recommends is a game changer! Now I can see all my clothes, and it's so nice. I've also made myself a set of rules for what I can and cannot buy throughout the year. For example I have to want something for at least 3 weeks before I can buy it, to make sure it is something I actually really want. After following you and reading about and watching a lot of videos about minimalism, I know that I have changed my mentality when it comes to shopping, and I'm more conscious of what I bring into my home, but I think it's good to have some rules as a reminder for myself :)

When I moved into my new room I kept the walls white and it drove me CRAZY. I don't know why. Probably because my room is very very small (8m2) so it feels like a prison cell. I put up old stuff that I had all over the walls, like postcards, souvenirs, maps... It looks so cluttered but I just love the personality of it. I guess that it's different for everyone.

I could never take it down. I love your channel so much that I’ve been teaching him even at 6 years old you need to recycle. He ever gets mad when people at our apartment doesn’t recycle!

Western culture makes it hard to not accumulate stuff we don't need. I'm very careful to only get 'needs' and stay away from 'just want this', but I still declutter about two boxes of random things every single year lol minimalism is a never ending journey. Having a no spend year every few years helps me a lot.

Art to enjoy and blank space to zone out on, if you're creative and need some blank space.

About KonMari show, the families were just given help about what to do when they were unsure and the rest of the decisions were their own. With the limited time (some of the houses have waay too many things to go over one by one at the limited time) and freedom of keeping whatever brings joy it is normal that they still have more things than minimalists.
Marie Kondo herself said that KonMari isn't really minimalism, since one focuses on things you declutter and other focuses on things you decide to keep. I believe both can become useful if one knows how to use it and know why they're doing it.

    • @Luthien_0
      @Luthien_0 5 лет назад

@@mon4711 So, which is which? I feel like KonMari is more decluttering and minimalism is things you decide to keep. Even though KonMari focuses on keeping things that strike joy, in minimalism one must be intentional about what they actually need/use in order to live a less cluttered lifestyle. Is that correct or am I totally off base? Lol.

Oh yes, the pile of clothes that have been worn, aren't dirty, but you're too lazy to put them back away. I do the same thing. Right now there is a pile building on top of my dehumidifier...haha. I should get on that. Thanks for the motivation!

Ylu should install some open air shelves in your kitchen! you can use scrap metal or wood and attach them to the walls for more storage space!

I never noticed you lived in Austin. All this time I was trying to find where I can go dumpster dive here. I live up North. Have you ever tried diving at an HEB?

The only things on my walls are things I love and make me happy. This being said, it's mostly pictures of my babies ☺️ and a cool cat shelf system we got about 6 years ago that my cats love and new people always ask if it is meant for cats or is art, and if our cats use

For some reason the changing of location throughout the video reminds me of Mr Rogers changing his sweaters 😂

Where I live they have food banks that also have clothes and people who need the clothes can get items once a month for FREE. You should look into that option.

In Canada our thrift stores take all electronics and sell the ones that work and recycle the ones that are damaged!

I challenged myself for February to declutter a box a day--and ended up with 37 boxes to donate, plus some furniture. This did include items from my mother and son, whom I live with. But the majority of items were mine. In rural Kentucky there are limited outlets for donation, so all of them did go to a donation site.

When I Marie-Condoed my cloth I got rid of 6 large bags of clothes. I was shocked.... I had way too much!!!! Wow!!!! I left what I actually wore, or absolutely loved, but don't really wear much. If you have too much clothes, I'd highly recommend Marie Condo method for decluttering clothes.

I think you should start a buy nothing sell nothing swap group on Facebook. I was able to get some much needed nursing clothes that way and I was able to give things away and I knew it was going to a good home. Great way to close the cycle!

I have a small rug on the floor next to my bed where I put my clothes (don't worry it's very clean) when it's worn but not dirty. My fiance calls it my hamster corner. 😂😂
