    Unbelievable! After 20 years of Quake, the first person who uses his little finger to jump just as I do! Cheers to you my well-reasoned-out-keybinding-brother!
    Except for that +forward on mouse 2, I used pretty much the same reasoning when I arrived at my personal config all these years ago. However, when asking myself where I should put my hand on the keyboard in order to reach as many keys as possible, I ended up with UHJK. That way, there are even more keys your pinky can reach and, even more importantly, your thumb has the very comfortable choice between space and ALT. Before voice communication was a thing, in Quake 2 (especially CTF) we communicated via a whole lot of teamsay bindings. The ALT key came in very handy as a modifier to use for alternate bindings on your easy-to-reach keys. Provided the game supports alternate key bindings, I still use this system (especially helpful for MMOs). Of course by using UHJK you lose that small advantage of having your left an ready to type on ASDF.
    All in all I can strongly support the view that is presented here. It really makes a difference. Especially the part about jumping with your pinky and using your thumb for often used functions that should not interfere with the rest of your movement.

    • @RocketJumpNinja
      @RocketJumpNinja 7 лет назад +1

      Quake 2 CTF represent!
      I've actually been using FGHJ lately (F is jump) for the same reason. In Quake, not so important, but in DOOM when there are 2 specials that you can't sacrifice a finger for, the thumb controlling the second fire (space) + grenade (alt) is brilliant.
      That's why I was impressed with Roccat keyboards having the extra buttons for your thumb (underneath space bar). The thumb is mostly wasted, so it'd be great if more companies started implementing some kind of thumb feature.

    • @cataMailman
      @cataMailman 7 лет назад +1

      ABSOLUTELY. I had the Roccat Arvo for a while. But only for its size since my UHJK doesn't work with Roccats thumb-button-placement. I loved the idea though and I wish there was more of that, maybe with adjustable placement.
      While we are on the topic of things that there should be more of: Did you ever encounter the Logitech Wingman Gaming Mouse? It was one of the first (maybe the first?) gaming mice ever. 3 buttons, no wheel and before the time of optical sensors. In my quake days this mouse changed my game completely and to this day I swear by its shape. The shape of that mouse forever set me on the path of a claw/fingertip grip hybrid. Since you really know what you are talking about when it comes to mice, do you have any idea on why there has never been a revival of that particular shape in mice? I have real trouble finding new mice that suit claw/fingertip. Most are aimed at palm grip users. And whenever you (or others) say that THIS is a claw/fingertip mouse, I always compare it to the Logitech Wingman shape and NOTHING comes even close. What's up with that? Maybe an idea for a video. ;)

    • @RocketJumpNinja
      @RocketJumpNinja 7 лет назад +1

      Guess you might be in the minority that liked it! If something is really popular, they generally remake it... but not always, of course. Could be a lot of reasons, but I'm not sure!

    5:20 was actually an interesting point to bring up. I had a friend who would have really predictable strafing patterns while they talk and then they'd get upset for doing bad so they'd stop talking and concentrate. Immediately afterwards their movement would be completely different and they'd improve dramatically. After this happened a few times I asked them if their push to talk was v or something instead of mouse 4 like I have. It was. When they talked they couldn't strafe everywhere they wanted so when they stopped talking and concentrated they were free to move more freely.

    My setup for BF1:
    Im currently experimenting with alternative configs for BF1 but there's soo many actions you need readibly available. My main goal however is to never let my fingers of the movement keys, ESDF.
    Move: ESDF
    Sprint: <
    Prone: Z
    Crouch: CapsLock (reprogrammed to "O")
    Spot: A
    Gasmask: C
    Reload: V (Default i R which requires movement fingers)
    Bayonette/melee: B
    Nade: N
    I've been thinking about moving ways to ASDF for movement to remove the ~0,1 seconds that it takes to switch button when using only middle finger for both forward and backwards. Gonna try your config with a mouse key for forward movement!

    At one point I found out about keyboards with different layouts, and later got interested in the Colemak layout and then 60% keyboards. Colemak was interesting because it puts the most used keys in the home row (where your fingers would normally sit on a keyboard). It's made for effiency, in turn you can potentially type faster and it's also more comfortable (realised I didn't like QWERTY).
    I got the 60% POK3R kb because you can switch it to to Colemak with dip switches and it's smaller, which gives more space for mouse.
    I thought about how I could make my CS:GO key config more efficient. I hate using the number keys for weapon switching so instead I bound them to the scroll wheel.
    Scroll down, primary. Scroll up, secondary (

    In BF1 I've just switched to m2 s d f, though I've swapped jump onto one of the side mouse buttons and placed sprint on A. Reason being that you sprint *a lot* and holding two mouse buttons gets exhausting.
    I have spot on E as it's easy to reach and used constantly while strafing.
    Primary and secondary weapons on Q, W, and the two gadgets are on R, G.
    Crouch is on backslash, prone on z, interact on c, gas mask on caps
    Mouse 2 for forward is going to be difficult to get used to. We'll see if I stick with it.

    I use UHJK whenever I can. It allows my pinky to do way more and it's much easier to hop my thumb between R-alt and space than it is to do so between space and L-alt when using WASD or ESDF. I also try to avoid having to hold mouse2 'cause it fucks with my aim, so I usually use V to aim, then I set mouse2 to some tap-function, like toggle crouch.

    • @chrismoles861
      @chrismoles861 4 года назад

      Been looking for this comment. I switched to UHJK about a year ago. Use it on every game and it allows my pinky, but for me more importantly my thumb, to not only use space for jump but right alt and even delete next to that. It's so much more convenient to free up your other fingers. And saves half a keyboard of space on the desk. Best thing I've ever done for my game. Also use V for sprint and mouse 4 for crouch

    So, I just switched to your key configuration three days ago and I´m already pretty used to it. I would say I´m almost as good as I was before with WASD (which isn´t good at all but still :) ) and while I´m a bit worried about wearing out the soft touch finish of Mouse2 on my XTD Optical way faster, overall I find my left hand to be way less cramped and in a much more comfortable position.
    But I find the mouse itself to feel heavier with the right hand fatiguing a tad more quickly.
    I currently almost exclusively play Dirty Bomb and often need to hold down keys for extended periods without hindering movement and for that I haven´t found any button more suited than CAPS-LOCK and I had to turn on "Toggle Use" for the "Use" function. Other than that it´s fine for me and being able to move from spawn (or in general anywhere) with just my right hand is super convenient, as well, as it allows for you to take a drink or scratch yourself or whatever else you might want to do :)

      So yeah, I still use and love it! I yesterday swapped Jump (F->Mouse 1) and Fire (Mouse 1->F) just to try it out and then I played a bit of QL Instagib like that. But I'm gonna stay with my normal config. I can't see myself changing it permanently any time soon but I might experiment a bit. Experimenting does mess with your muscle memory quite hard, though ;)
      I'm still using that exact Kone XTD Optical for the most part but at this particular moment I'm having a Kone EMP on my mousepad.

    movement: WASD
    Crouch: Shift
    Walk: C and Ctrl
    Fire: M1
    Jump: M2
    Rocket launcher: 4
    Railgun: 2
    Shotgun: 3
    LG: E
    Guantlet: 1
    Nade: X
    HMG: Z
    MG: F
    Plasma gun: G

    This config made me a lot better at the game than other configs.

    Bottomline is no matter how weird a keybind setup is you can get used to it. For example I Switched to jumping with RMB one week ago, space to zoom. Had been using space to jump since back in the 90:s. Was super awkward for a number of days. Could strafe jump with it but if I tried to shoot at the same time with LMB it would throw me off. Especially clicking and not holding LMB while strafe jumping felt impossible. Now though one week later it feels great. Playing better than ever with the setup. Occasionally I am instinctively still pressing space to jump if things get very hectic but will disappear in time.
    Next thing I am doing is changing my wasd setup to yghj. Also ordered a keyboard without a numpad. Want the best ergonomic setup possible. Lowered my sens a lot same time I switched to RMB jump. Found I was getting some shoulder discomfort after doing this however. Just seems smart to be able to keep the mouse more towards the center of your body hence yghj and no numpad.

    I use WAXD cuz for me x key still easy to use and s to fire cuz easy. I use left and right keys for strafing as well as a secondary keybind. I use scroll wheel for somthing i can do repeatedly really fast (change weapon?) and the l-alt for an ability or switch weapon. I use space for another ability and a tab key normally for jump (idk it works for me)

    I've been using ESDF for movement for a long time (old timer FPS gamer here also). I never understood why ppl wanted to use WASD... your hands naturally rest on the keyboard to type at ESDF. I also use inverted y-axis like you. Playing CSGO ppl are always amazed to know you use inverted y-axis but like you said it seems intuitive coming from a flight sim perspective.

    Hey, Zy. Nice tips you have there. Id like to share my config with my opinion. In OW i main Tracer and my cfg actually trails back from Q2. Mouse2 - jump, mouse1 - attack1, mouse3 - ult(throw bomb), mouse4 - recall. The reason i bind jump to mouse2 is cuz i used to bhop alot, and there was one day at a internet cafe where i saw the admin playing q3 and usin mouse2 to jump alot. I didnt know bhoping back then, but i felt like this would be the most suited jump bind for me.
    Now the keyboard. I grew up playing lots of nes and sega games, so my hands are used to be close together while using game controllers. Combining it with low sens i moved my movement keys like so: keypad8 - fwd, keypad5 - back, kp4 - strafe left, kp6 - strafe right. I used to play alot of HLDM back in the days, and you use longjump module very often there. So i had my bind to space to longjump. Similary, in OW i bind Tracer's blink to kp_enter. It leaves me with the same feeling of a short forward dash. Quick melee goes to kp_plus. Reloading - kp_period.
    Sometimes i imagine how ppl could react should i end up in a progaming career. Like a guy, who moves his keyboard one full length left before the matchstart :D

    Do you play FPS games like Call of Duty? In Modern Warfare 2019 (including free-to-play Warzone) you can run, sprint and "tactical sprint" (3 speeds of forward movement). Also, you would typically aim down sights (ADS) before firing your weapon. Would you use SPACE? I tried it, seems unlearnable. :-) As a console gamer trying to learn keyboard, I'm curious what key binds you would use. I hate the default alternatives to CROUCH (left-CTRL or C).

    i mostly play wow and csgo and i use wasd to move, started my pc gaming with action quake 2 where i used wasd, space jump, f bandage, q throw weapon and swich to knife, c mian weapon and mouse 2 + scroll 3 zoom lvls. now in csgo i use all those buttons + e mouse 3,4 and 5 and 1-6. only issue ive had is that i had q as use last weapon and then i had pistol on 2 ak 1 and knife 3, but when using awp
    you need to switch to your knife then back to awp to move and shoot fast again. so since i use wasd i couldnt move left while changing, so changed my q to pistol and then mouse 4 and 5 knife and awp so now i just swipe my thumb across the 2 mousebuttons to switch to knife and back instantly and no sort of nerf. everything that requires movement of my hand/fingers are things that i dont need to move while using, like nades since you dont pull out a nade while looking at someone in csgo :D pistol on q tho? never had an issue there. also use shift and ctrl for duck and walk and both scroll and space for jumping. also v to talk in game

    I used to use right mouse button for forward in my Quake 2 days...at some point, many years ago, went to wasd. Thinking of going back to what I used to do but my main concern is a lot of games have secondary fire. It is nice having that on m2. I guess if a gun has secondary fire it doesn't have a zoom so the space bar could then be used for it. Could see some control clashes with games though. Will have to experiment.

    Hmm. I heard on some obscure forum a few years ago that ESDF would be a good configuration vs WASD when it comes to first person shooters. At first I mocked that person, but now I think they might be right...ESDF means that my fingers have access to more keys, and moving one key further from my side keys doesn't really matter as much since I have large hands.

    Did you play Doom 2 on DWANGO?I come from that era and I played RMB move forward for many years until people kept telling me I shouldn't do that in the 3D world in the late 90s. Then Doom 2 had no RMB function so it was fine. It's just funny you said you came from the old school and use that same config - I had almost totally put it off. I played a game of QC with it and it was still in muscle memory but a little rough.

    • @jobelthirty1294
      @jobelthirty1294 7 лет назад +41

      Scroll wheel cycle? Why? That's way slower than binding the keys around your WASD hand and will get you killed 90% of the time my friend.

    • @arrrthurk
      @arrrthurk 7 лет назад +16

      Yeah, I agree with Marcus. You can play this old WASD standard alright, but you should probably drop the scroll cycle. This part seems pretty bad, mate. Besides taking too much to find the right weapon, you have to scroll to the right point and the scroll wheel distance will vary accordingly to what weapon you're currently using and to what weapon you want to change to. Besides taking too long, it is prone to error, pretty hard to memorize and pull off that in the middle of a fast paced fight. I suggest you at least try this:
      mousewheeldown: rocket
      mousewheelup: rail
      It will not change that much your config and it will unbind two of your number keys. Well, if that works for you, then you could also change the keys for some of the other weapons as well:
      E: lightning gun
      Q: grenade launcher
      F: plasma gun
      1: gauntlet
      2: machine gun
      3: shotgun
      4: heavy machine gun
      You'll see that it is not that hard, and you also won't need to change it that much.
      On another note, I also changed some other things from this WASD standard and I suggest you give it a go:
      mouse1: shoot
      mouse2: jump
      space: zoom
      If your mouse has more than three buttons, you can do some other configs that don't deviate that much from the WASD standard that you're so accustomed and in love with.
      BTW, I'm an über-noob, so don´t take this as a flawless, pro advice, just a friendly suggestion :) From what I can tell, this config that I'm using is the standard in the Brazilian Quake Live community.
      I'm already giving this video's config a go, so far I'm really enjoying it,.I don't know why, but my LG accuracy has significantly improved, and I'm not even more than 2 days using it. So I guess you should try it as well, but that is a major deviation from what you're used to.

    Hey, I need some help.
    My forearms are really big and whenever I left click, my entire arm moves because of my big forearms.
    Sometimes when I click I aim enough pixles away to miss.
    I've tried to use V to shoot, but this means I have to use different fingers to move.
    It is really confusing and hard to learn, should I go forward with this or stop?
    Anyone with the same issue? Any fixes?

    • @savary9
      @savary9 4 года назад

      high, just a quick idea here, I've had the same problem with different ways of holding my mouse. I think that your cursor moves just by left clicking, there's a real issue in your grip. reconsider how you hold your mouse. for me it was giving a lot more space to the thumb on my G402, which is a big mouse (for my big hands, 22cm). I realized I was forcing myself to hold it straight cause I thought this would be the most balanced, but it actually hurt my hand and I was uncomfortable. Need to swap between option to realize that the one you were used to was actually bad for you and your health. This also applies to your arm position and general posture (your desk might be too high and your screen too low, for instance). For a quick start about this topic, try and type gaming posture on google, look at the pictures, and find a good article or video.
