  • Making English horn reeds is MOSTLY just like making oboe reeds. Here are some of the details that make them different:
    How to use your oboe mandrel to wind an EH reed
    Measurements and structures of an EH reed
    How and why to put wire on
    How and why to put tubing on the end

    Outstanding videos, Jennet!! I personally find that EH reeds are much easier to make in comparison to oboe reeds. BTW, I can highly recommend the Chudnow EH staples.

      Weihan Xingqi I completely agree! I love the Chudnow tubes.

    These are great tips. I'm still trying to teach myself how to make oboe reeds, but my EH is next! This little video will help enormously and I will be able to cut to the chase (pun intended).

    Do you play your EH reeds with the twisted long piece of the wire on the bottom or top?

    • @JennetIngle

      Great question! I have another video somewhere where I talk about this... I play with it on the top, so I cut the lower blade away from the wire. But I don't think the position of the wire matters, as long as you know where your lower blade is.

    This may be a silly question but are you using the same plaque for EH reeds as for scraping oboe reeds?

    • @JennetIngle

      Not a silly question! Yes...but... You might recall from my Plaques video that I use a super skinny plaque for oboe reeds. The edges of those wear down very fast, and they get razor sharp. When I move to EH reeds, sometimes those sharp edges will slice the sides of my reed, because the wider reed surrounds the plaque a little more - so I choose newer plaques OR thicker plaques when I'm going to be working on EH reeds.

    For the poor mans mandrel does the English Horn tube rest on the cork? So could I use an oboe staple that has no cork?

    • @JennetIngle
      @JennetIngle  6 лет назад

      I should have been more clear. The cork is irrelevant- the EH staple shouldn’t touch it. You can remove it altogether.
