They’re not truly “easy,” I wouldn’t say, as they do contain tricky passages and occasionally make significant demands of the technique, especially relative to other music of the same period. But their intricacies are not technical in nature. So, by “too difficult for artists,” Schnabel understands that there is a quite a lot of content to unpack in this music. The sonatas are full of “musical puzzles.” The writing is quite exposed; every turn of phrase and change of harmony is laid bare to the ear, relatively free of filigree or ambiance to hide behind. This is a core feature of the high Classical style, of which Mozart was the quintessential master.
