@VectorOmega At the time when the game was released, Pluto was actually closer to the sun than Neptune. It happens about every 250 and lasts about 20 years before Pluto moves back as the 9th planet.
Thanks! Gyruss is my favorite arcade game, but the only version I have beaten is the GBA since I didn't have to keep feeding it quarters. I highly recommend Konami Arcade Advance cartridge it comes on: it has a number of Arcade Classics on it, the ports are good, they all have both arcade and a remixed versions, and can be found on the cheap. I also think the Atari 2600 version was excellent: It had the worst graphics of the bunch but played as good and sounded as good as many later conversions.
The Commodore 64 recording is terribly done. It must have been recorded from a PAL (50hz) system onto a NTSC (60hz) recorder. The action and music is much faster and smoother in real life, and the ships don't flicker like that.
+00Skyfox Yes, the C64 version has the best gameplay, and while the sprites flicker, they do it so quickly that it isn't nearly as distracting as it looks in this video--you can always clearly see where the bad guys are.
the nes version should be considered "Gyruss 88" (Like Galaga 88) (and sure enough it has a 1988 copyright on it). As long as you realize that, its' a decent game. the c64 version played on a NTSC system, is actually one of the best conversions ever made. very close to the arcade. it was horribly mangled here.
If Gyruss got a sequel, should the order of planets be changes, since Pluto is a dwarf planet? Also, should the ship be allowed to go to the planets' moons?
Gyruss is a great game. I've really got in to your 'Lets Compare' videos, they're a great idea and you've done a great job with them. A couple I wouldn't mind seeing (if your after suggestions) would be Rainbow Islands and Operation Wolf (just being playing both on Taito Legends).
Gyruss is one of my all time favorite arcade games, just love it. I really enjoyed the 5200 and C-64 versions. This game would be awesome with a refreshing for PSN or Xbox Live like Namco did with Galaga.
Of the examples in this video, I think the GBA is the closest to the arcade there is. The NES, although a bit different, is actually very fun to play as well. But the XBox 360 version... yeah, it blows them all out of the water LoL!
“Hello, this is SID from your C64 computer .....we are sorry to interrupt the music to let you hear a shooting sound or an explosion. Soon we will return to the music. Please except my apologies for only having 3 sound channels.”
@RandomWithWolfeyt Atari 2600 could do some pretty good music & graphics for the limited hardware. It was just really poorly utilized because the gaming industry then was so focused in cranking out games in high volume & not giving a damn about how the games looked, played, or sounded. I agree the music was good but repetitive. The most annoying music I think I have ever heard on the 2600 was on Double Dragon. You should check that turd out. lol
I thing that was the best Atari 2600 music I've ever heard. Seriously, it was MUSIC not crap!

My friends and I used to play the C64 version to death. For anyone who's never played it, it's not as flickery as it looks in the video.
Love the Dance Dance Revolution remix music used in the making of this video!
The music from smurfs is very ear-killing too !
I remember this in Crown Cafe, Aylesbury around 1984, great memories! Gallant how they attempted to convert such games to 2600.
A new resembling game, Zamarian, just came out on Google Play and the App Store. Search for it on RUclips here.
XBOX 360 arcade version blows them all away
It was redone on the Xbox live arcade.
I actually remember playing this game as a kid at the local milk bar back in the early 80's
Nowadays there's an MSX1 version. It's very close to the Colecovision, but it has more sound effects.
@subj1 Thankyou ! It's nice to know that You guys appreciate it. :)
I had this game on the c64 and I don't remember it having that much flickering at all
I loved this sound 0:58

wow!! didn't remember the flicker in the C64 version! I'm sure it wasn't like that in the real machine

Although the NES version is different from the others, I like it the best.
Amazing, i clearly remember that cover on Atari
Johann Sebastian Bach - Toccata und Fuge in D minor, BWV 565
--- Bach on speed ... if that wouldn't be a classy classic !! ;)

The POKEY suffers from that too lol

One of the first arcades I'v seen. Looks bad on all other platforms.
I prefer the Arcade, NES, and GBA versions.
Clearly the NES version is the far superior out of all of these and such an improvement on the arcade.
worst commenter ever !!!! :P
