Most periods the subcontinent was divided between many different, often short lived warring Kingdoms. From the British East India company consolidating its territory to its direct take over by the British Crown in 1858 we have *less than 200 years* in which the British managed a pretty unanimous control over the whole subcontinent while eventually managing the largest empire in history that spanned the globe and which was directly conquered by sailing it's ships through thousands of miles of ocean, and well before the advent of telecommunications, steel and steam powered warships. *much tougher than sending thousands of soldiers from Arabia and Central Asia and making towers of skulls after putting whole cities to the sword* *The legacy of almost a thousand years of Muslim dominance* is mainly in its imperial architecture of grand mausoleums like the Taj Mahal, Badshahi mosque, Qutub Minaret and many other countless mosques, many, if not most were built upon Hindu temples that were often destroyed through horrific massacres described in Muslim sources, a few crude scientific observatories and few roads, the longest if I remember correct is the Grand Trunk road. But I guess modern critics such as yourself and *CHARLATANS like Shashi Kapoor* would have done a far better job at reconciling the countless volatile dynamics that was bubbling beneath the surface and which had plagued the subcontinent for more than a millennia *before the British came along.* In other words it would have been no different, if not in a far worse predicament than Africa. Since the beginning of the 20th century there *is about 5 billion extra human beings on planet Earth* , over 95% of them in Africa,Asia and South America and all as a direct result of the policies, intervention, medical and infrastructure developments, stability during colonisation mainly by the British empire and most recently by the Western world. *of course, like all empires atrocities were committed by the British empire* yet what they have left behind is *considerably better* than what all other empire's have left. 24:02 Warren Hastings was the first governor general of Bengal. William Bentinck was the first governor general of British India , Lord Mountbatten was that of the Dominion of India.
Thank god I find this comment. I am also facing this problem, Bcz I read somewhere that. Warren hasting became the 1st governer general of BENGAL. but here it's mention that. Warren Hastings became the 1st general of INDIA. that's make confused me.
Warren Hastings was the first governor general of British India in 1773 or technically we can call him as he had de facto power ! and after that in 1833 the British Parliament passed the Government of India act also know as Charter Act of 1833 which re designated the post of Governor General of India that governor of bengal would be the Governor general of India this is how William Bentick is the First de jury gov general of India ! A game of De facto & de jury that's it
After the Regulating Act of 1833 , the other two provinces were made subordinate to the GG. In that sense , Warren Hastings was the GG of India. , I suppose. The defacto and dejury concept as mentioned by Nishant Kapoor makes sense.
Correction: In 1773, Warren Hastings was appointed as governor general of Fort Williams only and not India. The Governor General of India came into existence after St. Halena Act (1833) and first governor general of India was Lord William Bentinck.
Exactly! Initially the Governor general of Calcutta was made Governor general of Bengal (therefore Madras and bombay presidency came under him) and than Governor general of India and than Viceroy of india.
My goodness I was shocked when I see ur hard-working, presentation, and perfect clearcut information . Thanks a lot .and keep doing more Vedios sir please

Unfortunately never paid much attention or I can say the school education failed to inculcate passion for this subject. A generation had failed to pay more attention to such an important subject, and that's why still spread all over the world lost in making more money only. Your such videos help dwell into past, and motivate towards karthavyam. Thank you so much.

Sir, i went through several of videos of modern history but found none of them as informative as yours 🙏 you've done such a great work in extracting out incidents that took place at that time & beautifully narrated each of them year by year that it becomes so easy for us to understand 🙂 so i would like to thankyou for that and then i would request you to plz do make the next part of the video from 1857-1947 as we all are eagerly waiting for it 🙏
Nicely done! So comprehensive a summary of a very complicated story... Can you supply a reading list, not of English historians only but preferably Indian historians, who write in English, to deepen further my understanding of India's modern history?
Sir, please do marathons for all subjects.....bcz ur unique in RUclips...no one can beat u, even books ...... please do complete marathons for 2024 prilims....
I have watched various videos on RUclips on History, they talk unnecessarily, none of the videos on History I was satisfied with. Just came across your video, your voice is really good, so precise, to the point. Really, I enjoyed your video on History, exactly what I wanted. Pls continue to make such more videos. It's really helpfull... A big thanks for such informative History video.

*Whithin only 200 years* they managed to build the longest railway system in the world, thousands of miles of roads, modern sanitisation, modern schools, colleges, hospitals, museum's, the destruction of the Thugee class of bandits that were often used by both Muslim and Hindu Kingdoms to terrorise each others lands, the abolishment of slavery and the horrific practice of sati where a wife was burnt alive after the death of the husband and most importantly a united India which would otherwise have been no different from the centuries before the British arrived, a landmass of many warring Hindu and Muslim Kingdoms *which would have become an absolute hell hole* if such a fragmented landmass had entered the modern world with modern weapons and the dynamics of modern world political allegiances, *had the British not united the subcontinent and left with only 2 independent states instead of potentially more than 50.*
*clearly they did a piss poor job at dividing and conquering then huh???*
And the idea of a separated India between Muslim and Hindus had little to *NO SUPPORT* from the British Raj, if anything the British authorities were struggling to contain it from disintegrating any further into something like it was before the Brits arrived.
But I guess modern critics such as yourself and *CHARLATANS like Shashi Kapoor* would have done a far better job at reconciling the countless volatile dynamics that was bubbling beneath the surface and which had plagued the subcontinent for more than a millennia *before the British came along.*
In other words it would have been no different, if not in a far worse predicament than Africa.
Here are some other amazing thing's *only the British did for India........*
.........*The British Raj social/political and judicial reforms*
1) The oft-mentioned "drain of Indian wealth" into the
pockets of foreigners amounted to around 1% of
India's annual net domestic product between 1868 and 1930.
2) On the flip side, by the 1880s, the British had
invested around £270 million (adjusted for inflation, around £33 billion) in India- the money amounted to around 20% of all British investment overseas. By 1914, that figure had risen to £400 million (adjusted for inflation, around £44 billion).
*3) The British increased the amount of irrigated land in India eight-fold; by the end of the Raj, 25% of Indian land was irrigated, contrasted with 5% under Mughal the rule (which immediately preceded the Raj).*
4) The British created an Indian coal industry from scratch, which by 1914 produced around 16 million tons.
5) On 16th May 1775, under the East India regulatory act 1773, Nand kumar Dev became the FIRST EVER BRAHMIN TO BE CONVICTED OF MURDER. Prior to this date the Brahmins had exclusive impunity from state prosecution regardless of the crime.
6) 1795: For the FIRST TIME since the decline of the Ashokan empire, Shudras were granted the right to own property.
7) 1804: Female infanticide banned.
8) 1813: Slavery abolished.
9) Also in 1813: Right to education for all granted.
10) 1817: Punishments according to Varna system made illegal.
Honestly I could go on because there are hundreds more significant benefits that the British Raj gave to India and the world.
But you know, *most people are NOT interested is the truth.*
this is the finest explanation i have ever listen to.during my schooling and college education I missed this kind of educators ..this is how a student gets inspired to study ,listen with 100 percent devotion which makes a student to improve in his/her life..

Something out of the world has to be done to impress those 971 creatures who have disliked this golden content.
These are those "fufa ji" who always complain about arrangements in weddings.
"So instead of minimizing their cost, the only reasonable solution they could think of is to eliminate their competition"
hahaha, Amit Sir throwing around some good sarcasm :p
Bcoz britishers believed in monopoly 😂😂😂
It was Dog eat Dog world. If you eliminate the WTO and UN you will see this even today (Not that these institution can actually do anything)
Wow ... just imagine..class of history..from 1700 to 1857 ❤❤❤

A game of De facto & de jury that's it
I was also surprised how w.hasting became G.Gi
After the Regulating Act of 1833 , the other two provinces were made subordinate to the GG. In that sense , Warren Hastings was the GG of India. , I suppose.
The defacto and dejury concept as mentioned by Nishant Kapoor makes sense.
It was regulating act of 1773 , and also supreme court of Kolkata was established in 1774 and not in 1773
Correction: In 1773, Warren Hastings was appointed as governor general of Fort Williams only and not India. The Governor General of India came into existence after St. Halena Act (1833) and first governor general of India was Lord William Bentinck.
Was checking comments in hope of this correction...
Thanks for the correction
Warren* Hastings
Exactly! Initially the Governor general of Calcutta was made Governor general of Bengal (therefore Madras and bombay presidency came under him) and than Governor general of India and than Viceroy of india.
Absolutely right
My goodness I was shocked when I see ur hard-working, presentation, and perfect clearcut information . Thanks a lot .and keep doing more Vedios sir please

Hi I am from the UK and have just discovered your content, it is very good and I am learning a lot about history I was never taught, just wanted to say thank you for making it.
My ears are so satisfied listening to such an explanation with a fairly spoken English after a long time found such videos...there was one mistake about the date which was then corrected but it can be condoned as the video is so extensively explained with such a simplicity. Thank you ..subscribed 😊
How can someone explain it like this ....u r gem of a person .. literally ..I hv an exam on 5th September ..u helped me out with my revision ..
Hearty thanks for your efforts ✌️
The amount of respect and gratitude I have for you is hard to reflect through one comment. But honestly, thank a lot really, thanks you so much sir for all the efforts you put!

William Bentick became the 1st Gov. Gen of India(Charter Act of 1883)
1st Gov. Gen of India by Charter Act of *1833* , not 1883
