I love Othello - and also this version. You have to be careful: if you are not concentrated once or twice, the computer/atari rips you off mercilessly. Great stuff!
I was looking at the 'Atari Vault' on Steam and noticed that Othello wasn't listed in the compilation. I guess it probably got skipped due to licensing reasons.
Thank you for continuing to create these excellent videos. I'm curious how you feel about Spot: The Video Game on the NES. It isn't strictly an Othello clone, but does have similar elements. And I find it interesting that several years after Atari stopped publishing video board games on their machine, other publishers went ahead and released video board games on the next generation machines (Spot, Monopoly, Anticipation, Battleship, Pictionary, etc.) and continue to do so 30+ years later.
@@Phediuk It is - I played the heck out of Othello on the Atari 2600 as a kid, and that's why Ataxx became my go-to game when it appeared in the arcade. I still love playing both games.
Nice through look at the various console versions of Othello on early consoles. I can definitely see the overlap with Segaiden as those Sega versions of Othello look very nice (of course Atari VCS version also looks like it has its charms).
Atari Logbook challenge: Play game 3 with difficulty on B. Pro (Competent Competitor): Tie 32-32, (or win) Master (Tough Tactician): Win 50 to14, (or better) Wizard (Superb Strategist): Win 64 to 0. I played Othello as a teen sometimes, but don't remember the winning strategies. I got the text-label edition as an adult and made Pro, winning 34 to 30 in 2017. I'm not too interested in strategy-only games these days. But if I ever feel like learning how to play well, I might give this a try again. It's too bad Atari gave up on game variations; it was the end of an era. Connect-4 might have been a good game to bundle on this cart and help sales of this so-so board game.
My god, this is an absurd amount of research for a 40-year-old Othello game. Great work.
That's the value of having access to original documentation! If only more VCS games were so lucky.

You have, by far, the best series on RUclips regarding the A2600
Absolutely! :)
This game is masterfully done. I couldn't believe its complexity as a kid.
One of my favorites on the Atari! The expert game is a real challenge. Great work btw!

I've never actually played the NES Spot game, but it looks like an interesting twist on the formula for sure!
The arcade game "Ataxx" is a lot like Othello too.

Nice video! Will be including a recommendation, and a link to your video on my channel's review video Wednesday.

Hey will you get to missle command soon? Feel like 1981 was a good year, and how they convert new arcade games are interesting
Missile Command came out in May 1981, so it's coming up fast!
Woohoo!
I liked Atari conversions of arcade games because most of them had to be easy because of the Ataris limited hardware.
I only played Othello on Nintendo, I never played the Atari version.
Othello? More like Osmello.
