Oh the old Eyre H’way . What an adventure it was . We drove from Darwin to Perth in October 1972 in a GTR 2 door Torana . The road from Alice Springs to Port Augusta was gravel and off course the Eyre H’way was the main road thoroughfare to WA border . It was just a road back then . No car dramas . In 1974 we drove a Ford Cortina . We had troubles with that vehicle and ended up starting the gravel at 6pm , around midnight we stopped at Ivey Tanks Roadhouse , half way , for the best bacon burger we have ever had . We arrived at Streaky Bay at 6am . 12 hours , no problems , we were 25 years old , young and adventurous . It was a busy road , cars , trucks continuously . So glad you enjoyed the road .
I crossed the original Eyre Highway , now the Old Eyre Highway, in December, 1975. The vehicle we drove was a Ford XA panel van with no air con. You could see the new Highway being built to the south, but you couldn’t travel on it. The old road was about 300klms from memory. The road was very wide because it had not been maintained. Great memories just to see a cricket game…Oz v West Indies 😁. Safe travels
You’d be 50 years older 😁. I was 22, so I guess I’m giving my age away. The mate that I went with and myself are trying to organise a 50 year reunion this December and hats look at the Ashes Test in Perth. No doubt we’ll be travelling a bit more comfortably….
The hand prints are done by an overlander company we met in FNQ , don't even look a year old. We enjoyed our old eyre trip and the hand prints weren't there 2 years ago. Obviously a stencil
I've really missed watching your videos...been waiting patiently and boy is it paying off, so happy you're sharing with everyone again : ) as a 5yr old child my mother and I camped from Maryland USA to Prince Edward and across to Vancouver in our 1968 Opel Kadett Rallye (beautiful little thing Gold w/ black) pitchin our canvas tent every night for three months. I'll never ever forget it, which is one reason I love your films because even though I'm now 56 and a mother of three...I'm relating so much to Zuri and she reminds me of how I felt...like any thing is possible, on top of the world and experiencing life on my own terms instead of being told to sit and behave : ) good on you for helping your girls take on life in such a healthy, loving and inspiring way. Mikael Hospes from the Okanagan in BC Canada.
Great episode and the bit with the old sleepy lizard was good, educational. Seeing your little one walking around was priceless. You have two wonderful children.
Awesome ep guys I have spoken to some old guys that remember driving the old road … In an FJ Holden… Spoke of holding long neck beers out the window with a wet towel around them trying to cool them down enough to drink …. Said the road was bloody rough Which is believable in an FJ with small wheels…. Great stories I drive across about 2 days ahead of you!
In my world, USA, Pacific Northwest, there is a Maheur Cave that has a small lake at the lowest point. At some point, there were small row boats, but none are left now. It is privately owned, and only open to the public a few times a year. When I was a kid, we went inside twice without permission.
Absolutely, Karstan - dirty trucks... I agree with you. I purchased a Grenadier. It crossed the Nullarbor twice last year, then once to Queensland and twice to Tassie. I was peeved when I went to my dealership; the buggers washed my 'truck"! I went in for filters and an oil change, not a bloody car wash! Like the Oka, my truck, albeit smaller, also suits a bit of mud. Keep getting the Oka dirty, mate... Look after your ladies
Love love love... the baby is the cutest kid!! Early seventies..... sad to say, the road was littered with dead wombats. Awful but Keep on keeping on guys..
In Hungary, meat is only cut diagonally in restaurants, but at home, it is cut straight, but often diced.... You are a great family! Take care of yourselves
Yay Chicken Crimpies love em Zuri best to wash them down with an icy pole my favourite is orange. Will keep eye out for those ticks too from now on. Thanks as always taking me to places out bush. Cheers guys.
Awesome episode folks. Hey I thought those caves would have Rock Pythons, or Inland Taipans.?? Or none of the above. Brilliant footage though. Thank you for sharing. Take care. Atb from across the ditch.
Gday, only recently found your channel, awesome stuff, keep it up. My prediction for Old Eyre Hwy is that 6mths from now its going to be just as busy if not more than other roads especially with the caves and historic sites that have been there all along. Great episode either way and its terrific to watch the travels your family is taking. Your kids are definately going to look back and smile. Happy Australia Day to you all. Cheers.
We camped at Koonalda Station a few years ago and have been told that many of the old vehicles have been removed by car enthusiasts which is unfortunate . There were a large number of old Land rover’s so don’t know how many are left . It is controlled by Parks SA and you are meant to book a camp site on line . We didn’t know that at the time we stayed coming from the west . The fencing was not there at the cave and you could walk down into the cave .
Great adventure on the Old Hwy, im not sure which Cave it was out across the Nullarbor, they found a Giant Kangaroo - an Australian Lion which is now in the hands of the WA Museum & they're not for Public Viewing Sadly. I don't like the Chicken Shapes but some of the other Flavours are Yummy.
Great video there, mate. I think it'll be far too spooky for me to walk into that cave. Regards from William. Mount Gambier South Australia. Bill's Channel 1987( my RUclips channel )
Happy Australia Day K&M, Z&Z, so great to see you guys out doing the stuff that memories are made of. Good call taking that "road less travelled", people say crossing the "Plain is just a pain", but there's so much you miss taking the bitumen. One of my old mates abandoned an old Vauxhall Cresta out there on the old road in the 60's, probably one of the wrecks you were looking at. Cheers guys, great stuff.
Hi mate, I love your videos. Can I ask how to make your spining logo from combi to truck one, or can I have contact details? How mafe that one for ya? Thanks. I would really appreciate it if you could help. i have youtube channel too thanks again

Hahahahaha
We did Border Village to Nullarbor roadhouse in April 2024. We also loved the old Eyre Highway.
I wish my Mrs looked at me like Maxine looks at Karstan.
You’ve got a keeper there mate !

Yum you got me eating mini chicken crimpys now
Haha the nostalgia!!!!!
Hi Karstan and Maxine. Watching from country Victoria. Have you been , or are you going to have a look at Maralinga?
It looks like you have some two way radios in the vehicle. Can you share what radios you have and with who you can communicate. Thanks.
When you cross the old highway and you asked what the two separate roads were, this is where we had to divert when someone made it boggy
I have done the old road back in 1975, ended up with a broken axle and smashed wheel drum lol 😂
Back in the day the hole was used to keep stuff cold like butter
