  • Construction is underway on Riyadh's sports boulevard project, on completion this will be the longest linear park in the world. What is the insane engineering behind this park and why is Saudi Arabia building such a colossal mega project that costs so much money?

It’s probably expensive because they have to buy the buildings in its way.
When the government buys out established buildings to make way for a project, they have to buy it in a higher price than what it actually cost. Because owners never put up their buildings and lands for sale and the government has to buy it, they have to buy it in a much higher price. Also, real estate in Riyadh is the most expensive in Saudi.
I am only guessing but this is probably why

I see that the planners of this sports complex were thoughtful enough to include surfaces for bike riding, running, and walking, But did they think of Saudi's weather, which is classified as "Desert Climate"? Basically this means "HOT", with temperatures up to 43 C [ 109 F ] in the summer. I hope they are planning to include first aid stations every mile or so for the runners to be cooled down, or they might lose a lot of citizens in this park. 😗

Well you’re talking from a place of ignorance, since the Riyadh weather isn’t 43 all day every day, this weather you speak of is only in 3 months of summer during the afternoon period which’s less than 4 hours. Most residents in Riyadh goes to the South of Saudi Arabia in summer where the weather is around 10c-20c. Not to mention the culture differences in Saudi Arabia where people go out after sun set for activities regardless, also the ability of withstanding high temperatures that people from cold places can’t, I can run a few miles in 43c no problem!!

I’m Saudi and i can tell you some things.
Saudi is large. 12th biggest country.
While the majority of the land is a desert climate, not all of it is.
In the north you can find cold snowy lands, it gets a lot of snow every winter and stays relatively cold in summer.
The south has tropical climate and rain forests where it rains almost daily all year round.
That aside, let’s talk about this specific project.
This project is in Riyadh city. It is the capital city and is in the middle of the country, it is in the desert. It is surrounded by sand dunes. It is indeed a HOT desert climate in Riyadh city.
But, did you know? Dry desert climate is very hot only when the sun is up.
But when the sun goes down, it cools off very fast.
People in Riyadh prefer to go out at night. Nobody ever walks during the peak sun times. Unless it is downtown between high rise buildings where the sun never touches ground.
Regarding Riyadh: Peak summer temperature at noon is 43-48 is usual.
But on the same day after sunsets it drops down by some 10 degrees.

All of this for only half of the population? Women cannot run nor jog in a abaya. Or even walk in the sun for most of the year. So they get left out. Nor are men allowed to wear what we consider to be sports or workout clothing in public. Kind of hard to do any outdoor exercise when it's 130 degrees out.
What about sandstorms? How will they clean up parkland after a major one? Or clean the waterways?
The reason they have an obesity problem is because they rather live indoors with A/C running most of the year.
I'm sure that they are building "The Line" more as a safe habit to survive what global climate change is going to do to the Middle East. It will be the only habitable place for part of the year by the time it is done. It's just too bad that only the rich will be able to afford to live there, as the poor people retreat to caves or migrate north to escape the heat.
