    So annoying when blackivists immediately label you racist for thinking its weird Ariel is black. If Disney really cared about representation, they'd make a story about the black mermaid from the show and write an original story. It's not that it's a black mermaid, the problem is that it's a black *Ariel*. I keep hearing "but Disney cast Halle because she's best for the role!" That's BS. They didn't cast Belle correctly either because Emma Watson can't sing worth a damn and looks like a tomboy. They miscast genie with Will Smith, as his acting isn't nearly as bombastic as Robin Williams. Halle can sing but she doesn't look remotely like the character. Would you cast ScarJoe as Storm? Ryan Gosling as Blade?

      As I said during the Percy Jackson tv casting, your job first and foremost as a casting director is to find actors who both embody the personality of the character AND look like them. If you’re telling me that there wasn’t a single child star that could play Annabeth AND looked like her book counterpart your either a) bad at your job, or b) lying to me. That being said, people shit on me for being frustrated by the Annabeth casting but guess what I am frustrated by the Percy casting too. Wanna know why? Cuz he’s BLONDE. They made him BLONDE. He isn’t blonde he has black hair and sea green eyes, if you can’t do your job properly don’t do it at all folks. When they first announced the actor I was like “ok…he’s blonde…ok well filming hasn’t started yet.” Then they began to release bts photos and he was still blonde “ok maybe he’s wearing a wig? Or maybe they haven’t filmed his scenes yet?” Then they release the teaser. He’s fricking BLONDE.
      I also had people telling me “well her (Annabeth’s) race isn’t important to her character so it’s fine!” Bitch, Beckendorff’s race isn’t a part of HIS character but you’d be livid if they cast a white actor to play him so don’t even.

      I will defend their choice of Will Smith... Certainly he couldn't do it the same WAY as Robin Williams... But Will Smith can play a hype-man and that is what a Genie needs to do. I don't doubt for a second he played genie because he was the best person they could think of.
      .
      However, that said, his "Prince Alee" song was just... lifeless. He is supposed to be making his master look like a god amongst men and playing the crowd, the song is a performance even MORE so than it is a song. Certainly sounds good, but there was more to it than that. But that is the problem with the direction of the movie (and possibly Will Smith just... outgrown that role)

      There has to be some fairytale or folklore from *somewhere* that could believably feature black characters, right??? Hell, why don't they just remake Princess and the Frog, and then have Tiana be a person for longer, since that's an issue people already have with the animated movie - it'd be cheap and uninspired, but they're clearly ok with that.
      I'm all for exploring stories from/based on different cultures, and more diverse casting and all that, but race-swapping is the laziest way of doing that, and kind of tells black people that they're just an afterthought, like, "hey, this movie with a white lead is due for a reboot, let's hire a black actor this time", instead of coming up with an original movie to cast them in, in all that time they had in between.

    The whole point of the Lost Boys was showing how immature and inept they are without a woman around. Without a mother-figure to guide them, they lived in squalor. Once Wendy came into the picture, in the original story, she taught them how to be organised, clean, and self sufficient, to the point that their leader, Peter Pan, started to wonder if growing up truly was a bad thing. Peter literally invites Wendy to Neverland with the expectation that she'll play a motherly role, something the boy's are seriously lacking.
    The reason Peter becomes enamored with Wendy in the first place is because he'd fly by her window every night and listen to Mrs. Darling (Wendy's mother) tell her kids bedtime stories, a tradition Wendy carried on when her mother fell ill. He never got that parental connection, and because of that he didn't want to become an adult. Later on, when Wendy and her brothers become painfully homesick, Peter returns everyone to London, including the Lost Boys he basically kidnapped, and they get adopted by Mrs. Darling. Despite everything he's learned, Peter still can't bring himself to become a man and returns to Neverland alone. Years later, he returns to Wendy with the hope that she'll go back to Neverland with him, as he's lonely, but she's now an adult and married to one of the former Lost Boys, with whom she has a daughter named Jane.

    Some idiot tried to argue that because there are women in the x-men team there is no reason to be upset over the lost boys having girls in them.
    First of all, ‘’men’’ can be used as a synonym for people, humankind.
    The x-men had female characters from the beginning.
    Peter Pan already has female representation! You have Tiger Lily, Wendy, and Tinkerbell.
    There is a bunch of stories with all-female groups or at least one girl in a group but as soon as there is an all-male thing Twitter screams.
    The explanation as to why all the lost boys were lost in the first plays is because they were stupid and hyperactive and fell off their prams.
    Nice going Disney, all those diverse characters were morons as babies. And it's true, everybody can be stupid, especially when they're just babies. But I can guarantee they will never show them being immature and childlike like in the original.
    Also, the lost boys were inspired by real boys. And I can guarantee when people learn about their tragic backstories there will be a lot of angry people. Just like after they turned Peter Pan into a villain and everybody learned about the backstory of his voice actor.
    Let the shitstorm begin! I'll be watching from the sideline.

    • @MoonPhantom
      @MoonPhantom Год назад +136

      Also.... It's actually a really important part of the Peter Pan story that they are only boys there.
      Peter Pan goes to fetch Wendy, BECAUSE the lost boys don't have a mom and lack a mother figure! They build a house for Wendy and ask her to sing lullabies for them because they want her to be their MOTHER figure.
      And they need to take in a girl from the outside because there's no girl among them in their group.
      It is actually an important part of the plot that there is no girls, and there is something seriously lacking in their lives BECAUSE of this lack of a girl who can be a mother figure.
      And if you ask me, this is indeed the ultimate celebration of women's role in society. All of these boys are indeed... lost... with the lack of a mother. Even all of the pirates are longing for their mothers. And Wendy's mere presence is something precious to them they wish to protect.
      So that is uniquely a female role that is deemed incredibly important and irreplaceable in this story... But no! NOPE! Doesn't count. it only counts when women can be strong, and fighting, I need no man people. And need to be BETTER men than actual men... Women shouldn't be women, they should be men. that's the only way to matter in this world.
      .... Jesus Christ.

      Don't get me wrong, I think multiracial families, adopted or otherwise, could be represented in fiction more, but it kind of makes it hard to tell who is supposed to be related to whom if they don't say it out loud; and in the past couple of years, it just seems like it's been used to add diversity to a cast, but not replace the white characters entirely.
      The first time I noticed that happening was in FANT4STIC where they kept Susan Storm White, but Johnny Storm and their father were black. It's so sad to see the little mermaid being remade this way for "representation" because I remember watching the little mermaid series that was made from the original 80s version and Disney wrote and designed an afro-latina (or maybe she was just latina I don't remember) mute mermaid who became good friends with ariel. She had a octopus friend who interpreted what she was signing cause she used accurate american sign language! I'm pretty sure in her debut episode she and Ariel dreamed of getting something. Ariel wishes to dance like humans do and the mute girl wanted to finally talk. In the end, they never got what they wished for and instead learned to see that they had everything inside of them all along. The mute girl taught Ariel to dance with arm and fish tail motions while Ariel kept on encouraging the asl-form communication that the other girl already uses.
    Aside from representing a minority group, Disney also didn't write out an ableist narrative. The narrative being a disabled person getting rid of their disability and becoming like the other abled people in their franchise. I've heard disabled people say that this trope just erases their rep and says "don't worry! This character isn't broken anymore! Now their normal!" Which is insulting... But Disney didn't do that with this mute mermaid. They wrote her to love all of herself unconditionally.
    THISS is how you do representation Disney.

    What made the songs of the renaissance era of Disney animated movies so great was how theatre they sounded. For all that the songs were recorded in booths, the vocal work was robust, like they were on stage, and so it makes the characters feel like they're there, in the moment, singing their hearts out. Just that little clip alone sounded like it was meant to be recorded, if that makes sense. Which is sad because it does sound like the actress is giving her all, but it's felt this way with the last films and their songs. The original "Part of Your World, Reprise" is Ariel singing a promise to herself and to Eric, it's starts soft, almost unsure and in disbelief, then strengthens into resolve as she belts out for all to hear that she will attain what she desires. We hear the emotion and intent in her delivery. But this version...there's no emotion, no appeal to the audience to understand what Ariel's feeling and thinking, it's just meant to sound good and let nostalgia fill in the blanks. Which, like a lot of the film, despite being the 'realistic/live action' one, just makes it feel more fake than the original.

    • @twilightfades_7
      @twilightfades_7 2 месяца назад +1

      Wonderfully explained!! The singing is very stiff and polished, it does not push vocal boundaries the way Jodi’s did. With Jodi Benson, you not only hear her sing, you also feel it in your soul. They changed Ariel’s ethnicity for the sake of singing. But Bailey cannot act and her singing does not deliver the way a broadway actress/singer would deliver. You are 💯 spot on.

    Lol at the song, it’s overdone like I expected. Disney can’t make musicals anymore. One of the BTS of the original recording process for that song was for Jodi to tone it down and be more emotive, performative and less “singer”. It has that beautiful blend that a musical should.

    If these companies really cared they would take a risk and make a new original story to add more representation. Not just lazily race bend a few characters to shield themselves from criticism.
    They could have for example made a story about a black mermaid that is trying to rescue her family from Ursula's garden of lost souls. That way they have a new story, they get to represent other people and they can still ride off the fame of the original.
