James Holden in one of the greatest artists in electronic music, his music has always been free, it was becoming more and more free from all standards and today he's one of the most original musicians, mixing electronic music with jazz and progressive rock. Check out James Holden & The Animal Spirits! Jon Hopkins is another genius... trance of course is a different kind of music, but great artists are great artists :)
This song was on some of the Global Underground mixes, GU 16 Cape Town Mixed by Dave Seaman and GU Destinations (Both albums I have purchased back in the day).

But they were the wunderkinds and eventual kings of progressive. They haven’t achieved that legendary status that level in their new styles though

James was, by far, the best producer of that era. Shame he turned into such a snob and shunned the trance and prog community that put him where he got to. He makes the most pretentious fucking bollocks at the moment. Sad times.
I agree with all you said, but no community put him on top where he was... he did it himself. At least he left some kind of legacy and we can enjoy whatever he produced..
Yes and he used an old sequencer I forgot the name. I used that sequencer for a while, it was rustic but extremely flexible, with native plugins that sounded extremely analog-like.
