I deplaned almost 3 years ago from a flight back to the USA from Germany and a family w/2 kids absolutely trashed the seats they were in, all sort of dry foods spread all over the seats, floor, aisle nearby (crackers, cereal, snack puffs etc) another trip I walked by a seat where someone puked all over it. People are pigs.
I boarded a BA 747 in Miami and found my seat was absolutely covered in chocolate. From the headrest to the very bottom. Absolutely caked. This was a business class seat tool. Some one had obviously let a child go wild with chocolates on the flight into Miami.
I work in the industry. It's amazing to see the engineering and processes needed to keep these aircraft safe. Most people are clueless about what it takes
One the biggest reasons they stopped permitting smoking on board was because of how intensive the cleaning process was. Look at all that dust we see in this short video. Now imagine that all caked in a layer of stinky, sticky, tar like substance. That's what they had to deal with before smoking was banned.
I'm glad I'm not old enough to have flewn with planes where smoking is allowed. That must have been nasty - especially on long fights to sit there for hours and inhale the bad smelling, toxic stuff. Then when you finally get off, you probably smell like an ash tray and have to go change clothes and take a shower the first thing ju do when getting to your destination or get back home after a trip...
@@Speeder84XL fresh air is circulated from the engines in the cabin exchanging it constantly. Yes if you're next to someone smoking you will be exposed, but generally it's just the panels and avionics that are coated. That and ashtrays.
@@jagtan13 It takes a huge amount of air to ventilate it out if many peope are smoking at the same time. I mean, even sitting at an outdoor restaurant with some smokers, can be bothersome if there are no wind (especially if they also have sun shades above, so the smoke cant rise straight up into the sky). So, the airflow needed to really get rid of the smoke would probably use so much bleed air that it affect the fuel consumption significantly and steal power from the engines. The fact that significant tar deposits did form on air ducts indicate the air do get really dirty before it's extracted. Maybe it would work better with strong wents right above the seats sucking out the smoke right as it rises from the cigarette and when the smoker blows it out (think a row of kitchen fans sucking up the smoke) - but still there need to be many of them, so the combined flow still get quite high. I have also never seen planes built like that either. Usually there is an air inlet blowing air above the seats (which will mostly cause the air to swirl around, spreading the smoke thrughout the whole cabin before it finally find it's way to the extraction vents next to the floor). It's obviously also a question about how sensitive you are as well (I hate cigarette smoke). It might maybe have been good enough for your cothes to not stink afterwards though.
Lucky they had "Smoking" and "Non-Smoking" seats for people to avoid the nasty smell LOL. OMG are we crazy to think like this? "Disgusting!" ?? really? I used to clean jets and turboprops, inside and out. I am amazed at how much film was allowed to build up on the exterior, because it is inefficient, causes drag and costs money. I usually found film like that behind the exhaust of a Fokker F28. 737's with the bucket reversers would deposit a plums of exhaust up the fuselage aft of the engines - but under the fuselage, I never found it like that. So overdue, but " Disgusting"? But we assume it was a regular female flyer, who would place a sick-bag containing soiled sanitary products in the seat pocket. Interior crews would start clearing the seat of rubbish by opening a sick-bag at the leading seat of their section, and regularly their hands would find a nasty present in the bag. Back then, gloves were not used. It was like the traveller knew where to leave her gift. But we cleaned so many planes, and had to work fast, so yes a cleaner would get caught out occasionally. In my opinion, THAT IS DISGUSTING.
I used to work in aviation as an A\P mechanic and when the planes came in for checks (C & D), the planes was put out on a wash area and the plane was power washed with high pressure water and a detergent to remove all of the grime. Wheel wells, wings (flaps, etc...) came out spotless. No one ever used a bucket and a rag to clean the planes. When the interiors were pulled, I used to find coins from all over the world in the seat tracks. I did find an occasional $10 or $20 stuffed in a seat. My favorite was an old PSA L-1011 that had a lower bar area and after removing the seats from that area, I found about $5 in quarters.

you'd be surprised what people attempt to flush down aircraft toilets. I was fortunate enough to once avoid a job where a passenger tried to flush a blanket down the toilet. the theory is they had an accident while sleeping and was too embarrassed to tell a flight attendant. the blanket got down the toilet but stopped in the pipe blocking and backing up the lavs in the rear of the cabin. the tech that removed the pipe work was sent home after the job as the waste got through his hazmat protection. not worth the extra £100 if you ask me

Fun and interesting stuff. That toilet tank looked so nasty 🤮🤣 Most of the dust is not skin partices though - it's just fibers from the seat covers, carpeted floor and peoples clothes. Everyone who has used a tumble dryer have probably seen very similar dust collect in the filters (even though that's nothing nasty at all - just fibres from clean clothes that has just been washed). It wears off because of friction when clothes are tumble around. The same happens when people get up and down from seats draging their clothes against the seat cover, walk on the floor etc. But there is indeed some human skin residue mixed in there as well...
The big question is, how many airlines take it to this level for maintenance like we just saw? For cleaning the skin on the bottom of the aircraft they need a stand that they can lie down on. You can’t appreciate this kind of cleaning until you clean the bottom of the flaps behind the engines; it takes a few minutes. Excellent video!
Just flew from Chicago to Los Angeles. There was a family with three young children who stretched across and entire row. When I left the aircraft, that row’s entire floor was covered, like, painted with bright orange crumbs. Gross.
