Seeing as the bottles you are tasting/opening aren't usually the cheapest ones, I would suggest buying a Durant wine opener. Yes, very expensive, but specifically made for opening old vintage wine bottles. Anything is better than your current 'corkscrew', which is the worst model because of the guard on it.

I highly recommend buying an Ah-So cork puller for removing old corks. They work by “pinching” the cork rather than drilling through it.
