Mitski has said that at least some of her songs aren't autobiographical. But I do think that she has been through a lot of pain, simply because she understands and conveys it so well. I think some of her songs are about situations she experienced but I think some are imagined experiences/stories inspired by feelings she experienced.
i feel like this song goes hand and hand with a loving feeling like her being in a relationship with someone who only wants her for her body, but she truly loves them and wants to be with them so she'll sexualize herself to keep them around even if it hurts her because she cant let go of what could be
when she asks what her price is, it makes me feel like that this relationship has been going on for so long that she now thinks of herself as an object for people to use up while she silently hurts

This song hits me really hard. I was in an abusive relationship as a teen and he took advantage of me for years. Used me for sex (I was a virgin), money, and knew he could control me because I was insecure, young and naive. Constantly talked about my weight, cheated on me, had tantrums for bad reasons and treated my family horribly. He said many concerning things.... His name was Eric.

quite honestly, I've been listening to this song on repeat for a few weeks and I think I've finally come up with a decent theory on what I think the song is about. it sounds like a song about a girl who is a stripper (I'll explain), a prostitute, or maybe just in some type of sexual relationship where she has fallen in love with the other person but they can't be together. About the person being a stripper, I only say this because of the first few lines like "take off my clothes and watch me move" and "blue light, dark room". If you really pay attention to the lyrics, it doesn't sound like she is in any type of abusive relationship. Lines like "my heart wants to hold you but I know the rules" and "I'll sell my heart to you...what's my price...how about just a part of you" really supports my idea that this girl wants to be in a real relationship with the other person but something is blocking her (my guess is some type of agreement or contract that you would have with a stripper/prostitute or a f*ck buddy you are seeing). I also think that maybe the other person might have the same feelings as this girl (not sure if I should be calling this girl Mitski or not) but I'm still on the fence. I get this feeling from this line "But your skin did you notice your skin it cries a soft weep like mine". So that's pretty much what I think that line means and that's all I have. I wasn't able to find a good solid theory on what the meaning behind this song was and thought I should write one up. Then one morning, I was listening to it and it all clicked for me. I hope this was in any way helpful to anyone who was curious about the possible meanings behind this song

She wants to be in a relationship with them and love them without holding back or hiding feelings or anything getting in the way. the fact that she says "we play this way" insinuates that the feeling is mutual but something is getting in the way of their feelings.

2:50 the harmonization of all the voices asking “how about just apart of you” is so pretty but heartbreaking to me; it makes me picture different layers of a narrator begging their significant other to let them into their heart and love them on a higher plane than just physical. Or perhaps many women unfortunately falling for the same man who keeps promising them all something bigger but in reality only wants them for sex.

Odd thing to point out but there’s a sharp noise somewhere in the middle of the song, 1:50, going back and forth (if you wear headphones) in each ear. One of them eventually stops making noise, while the other keep goings. I don’t know what this means but it feels intentional.

Although I haven’t been in any abusive romantic relationships, I appreciate this song so much for the chain noises that you can hear in the background which could symbolize being stuck. And the unhinged feeling that comes with the screwing/unscrewing and banging of heavy mechanics sound within the song that also blends in with the uneasy violins. It’s all just so eerily perfect to me and it really captures what feeling disturbed by your circumstances feels like very well.

I think it's about rationalizing an abusive relationship. The speaker knows that they are being hurt, but they keep trying to convince themselves that they are in control.
It sounds to me like she loves someone who doesn't love her back, but her want for them is so strong that she sleeps with them anyway, and the only time they give her something back ("this view of you, of the top of your head makes me forgive you" which sounds like oral sex to me) is through sex. She's bargaining with her feelings ("How 'bout just a part of you?")

My interpretation of the song is her submitting to a man, letting him do whatever he wants to her because she loves him. Originally, he hurt her.. she still asks for help and as she sees how obedient he was and didn’t mind helping, that made her forgive him. Still remembering how she’s being used like this is a little game, she questions how long they can keep playing this way.. how long can we keep seeing each other like this? hooking up?, she craves his love, her heart wants him. The “rules” are her not being able to fall for him, since he’s just there for pleasure but it’s changed.. still she suppresses her feelings towards him, or at least- tries to. As she gets hurt again, he smiles at her shaken up body. Little does he know, she knows all too well that he’s hurting as well.. his skin cries like hers.
She offers to sell her heart to him, something you NEED to have or else you’d die, that’s how far she’d go for someone like Eric. She asks for a part of him, she wants him to feel the same way.. that’s why she wants a part of him because it wouldn’t be fair if she just gave up her heart only for him to run away with it. As someone with autism, considering we can depict these songs how we please, to me, this is how the concept of sex sounds like to me. In a sense, it feels mentally degrading, yet you know it is, of course it is, that’s the point, to feel vulnerable. Sensitive. Should you let yourself go, just to wake up knowing it was all for the thrill of one night, until you go back to do it again? It’s not like you’re a summer fling, really, but the concept of sex to me really shatters the safety and security a relationship might have in my eyes. I might be wrong because I’m young, but sex (for now at least) is almost like a contract that you can’t read the fine print of until you’re done, and then, you do it again. Under the sheets you’re a monster dancing with pleasure and control, kissing the lips of a shadow. And in the morning, you’re watching TV with your lover, your body used appropriately and still tingly with ecstasy. I’m probably having an ill view of sexual exchanges, but this song “Eric” kind of voices how I feel (with some more verbal explanation previously) about sex or the concept of being in a relationship, and having a sort of “hidden behind a veil” moment with your significant other quite perfectly. Even if it’s your first time, too, isn’t it scary? Regardless of your age? I kinda think about that a lot. Anyway, hope I don’t A, get bombed for my comment. And B, have my words taken the wrong way!
