Maybe the most underrated episode of any show in TV-history. Love it. There is happening so much under the surface. It's brilliant.
I can't imagine giving it any less than a ten out of ten.
The fly represents multiple things, many of them you already talked about and others were mentioned in the comments. The one that wasn't mentioned, and to me the most obvious, is that the fly represents the bug that is likely in the lab and possibly in Walt's apartment (inside the smoke detector), which is why you see another fly sitting on the smoke detector in Walt's place right where the red light is blinking. Walt understands this on a subconscious level because he now sees how much control and power Gus has, especially after the whole play that he put into motion with the cartel, Hank, Walt, and the Twins. Walt knows that he can't make any mistakes with someone as powerful and dangerous as Gus, and it's why he is worried for Jesse.
Aside from that, the fly is also something that is not right with the situation that he's in, something that bothers him - "A fly in the ointment". On the surface everything is perfect. He's got a state of the art lab, makes good money (even got a raise), a good boss that looks out for him, etc. but underneath he knows that things are not good - the numbers don't add up because Jesse is stealing, his relationship with Skyler is damaged, he feels guilty about all the things he had to do to get to this place, and now that he's here "there's no room for error" given who Gus is and what he's capable of.
Don't worry that the rating was lower than usual yet you enjoyed the show. You are just more insightful than most. I liked Walt's "You want them to miss you when you're gone" comment. I've seen older people die and all their friends and family were already gone and no one left to grieve them. Sad.
Thanks for another good reaction.
I love this episode so much. Its probably one of their best ones. The amount of stress it causes is unreal.
The possum is an animal in Australia. The opossum is common to Americans, usually called a "possum". They are cuties and do no harm, let them be.
The fly represents a few things, death following him, his lack of control over his situation, the guilt following him by others who he caused their death, and the lack of privacy he feels because Gus knows everthing.
I agree with you, this episode is probably one of the most controversial episodes in the series on how good it is, but I also think it's great. It's probably in my top 20 at least.
As for what the fly symbolizes, obviously it's all up to interpretation. But for me it all comes down to what Walt says towards the end. When he tells Jesse to give up catching the fly because "it's never coming down" and "it's all contaminated."
The fly represents the rot at the heart of Walt's life that he's responsible for. The damage that he has caused to the world, to his relationships, to his family, Jane's life, etc. since he started dealing meth. Everything in his life is contaminated by his choice. The only "good" thing he still has left is the lab where he can practice his love for chemistry. And now this fly comes in to also contaminate that. And so he has to get it out. He has to assert control over the one thing he still has control over, over the one thing that isn't contaminated.
So I think in that sense the fly represents the contamination of every aspect of his life and how it has been destroyed by his choice to begin to cook meth. And his obsession with it represents his desire to assert control over that contamination and over his life.
But as he says, and as the path from the fly's POV shows, the universe is chaotic. It defies control. The fly comes back in the end because nothing Walt can do can ever get rid of that contamination he's caused. He chose to cook meth, and now he has to deal with all the consequences of that forever.
The depth of this episode is superb....
Fun fact: the fly was nominated for an Emmy.
LoL 😂
This is my favorite bottle episode of all time!!!
Walt is directly responsible for Janes death. He shook Jesse and that made her roll onto her back and choke on her vomit. She didn't overdose.
The fly is representative of the showrunners trying to stay within budget.
Loved your outro. Walt's trippin on how deeply he's "sullied" himself.
There's so much to be had from this ep. You really can study it. It's that intricate. Walt's conscience, at this point and time, under a microscope. A behavioral psychologist's dream. (There's one RUclipsr that, imo, did a fantastic job of breaking it down.)
Oh, btw, that RUclipsr isn't a reaction channel. He just did an analysis of this ep. Sorry I wasn't clear before.
Not sure if the fly is representative of anything in particular, but given that Walt is a scientist & the lab is essentially his "kingdom", the fly is a force outside of his control that affects his product (his real baby & pride and joy). Walt's obsession of the fly "contaminating" his product has more to do with Walt's pride/ego/pursuit of "perfection" and less to do with any actual contamination (like Jesse said, their customers are drug addicts and not picky). But boy, does this episode have some gems. My favorite part is when Jesse starts prepping & Walt suddenly appears right next to him, asking him what he thinks he's doing.
I agree with that. I also think Walt knew Jesse would find this whole thing ridiculous. So here’s another opportunity to exert power and control over Jesse. He’s telling him we’re doing things my way no matter how strange it might seem.
Nice! One of my favorite episodes. A lot of people don't like it but I appreciate the simplicity and character work that it does. ^_^
Very good analysis! Random question…is French your primary language? If so, do you speak anything other than French and English?
@@murray8378 Yes it is! & no only french and english :)
Rian Johnson baby!
I love this episode too. Too many reactors poo-poo on it because it is all character development. They need to learn how to read and get away from their screens more often.
People who don't get the depth of this episode don't like this one but i find it a good episode
Well done Evie. Thank you.
I love this episode.

I think Walt did kill Jane. He was shaking Jesse, and that made Jane turn on her back, so its all Walt's fault.
One could also make the argument the heroine killed her. If Jane didn’t take the heroine it wouldn’t have mattered if Walt bumped her (or bumped Jesse who bumped her).
she killed herself, she wouldve died regardless from her addiction with that much money
@@prettymuchbangtan Maybe, but u don't know that.. If u use that logic, then Walt is a good guy that never killed anyone, because all people die sooner or later.. The fact is the Walt made her turn, and Walt made her choke
@@murray8378 So u can't kill anyone that smoke cigarets or eat fat food? Cause they might die from it.. Its a stupid argument u got
The amount of vitriol this episode received when it aired, the deeper meaning was lost on the car chase, shoot out crowd.
With the many hours of great drama that this series gave, having a little cerebral content should not offend.
I didn't like it at first but it's really grown on me.
You have to watch Blade 1998
Subtext and metaphores aside, how much of a contaminent is this fly really? They were cooking in an RV. Not exactly a clean room... just sayin.
@@eddied.3426 Very true! That’s why I think it was mostly psychological😂
One aspect of this episode that many people miss is that it comes at the mid point of the show, where every issue before it has been resolved and everything that will happen later has yet to be set in motion. We're basically in the eye of the storm. That's why Walt can obsess over something as inconsequential as a house fly which, as you point out, is most certainly not a problem at all. Maybe the calm allows him to think about what he's doing and the man he has become, which bothers him so much he needs to distract himself.
hey can you put gloves on and do a reaction to the movie anaconda
sorry but I just can't watch this one. it's the time that one of the greatest shows in TV history produced one of the worst episodes in TV history.
