@@LifeonbooksI have not been able to find any that I connect with as much. There is a book podcast called Mean Book Club. They read New York Times best sellers and end up, often, hating the book. I much prefer this podcast due to the care of each discussion you both have.
Gosh y'all always make me reach for my ereader. I'm always itching to read while you guys talk. I forget what books I have on my ereader but since I switched from a Kobo to my boox note air 3c color eink tablet that runs Android I just have a huge running list of all my books with their info and it's like browsing a shelf to pick a book. Also helps that I have them organized by genre and can see their book covers.
I love you guys! I've been listening through all the episodes, I love your opinions. I've read a lot of the same books, though a lot I haven't finished (bad habit). I love how you guys express your opinions about what to read and why you read them and how you think about them.
I am currently working through Solenoid and have been looking forward to Marshland for a couple years now when I heard about the translation, so that was a cool coincidence. "Custer Died for your Sins" by Vine Deloria should be a must read for Americans who want a good grasp of Native American policy and history. This is coming from a Native American who works in law and policy.
Piracy question... as per the people that can't afford books, I would suggest your public library. I realize not everybody has the same access everywhere, especially outside first world nations, but it is an option. Personally, I get read all newer releases this way. Most do not live up to the hype (surprise!), so am glad not to spend the cash. I also think a debut author is probably still struggling, so it really feels like a nastier crime than say pirating from an author with more than 30 books. Likewise, new releases with different covers. The book cover artist or illustrator may also be a debut artist. While a JK Rowling not so worried about getting her $1 for every single book, that $1 to the struggling artist really matters to them. (piracy of physical copies especially in places overseas like China and the Philippines, for example, is a real issue). I liked the comment about the translator. That's work, and often unrewarded. A great author with a bad translator might not be successful. Some Russian translators have made careers of this (eg. P&V). Thnk of how many different translations there are to The Iliad and The Odyssey.
Question - World book project, How do you determine the nature of the book is "from" the country, is it author born in that country regardless of where they live now? Does the author need to live in the country? Does the book need to be published originally in the country of origin, how do we tell if that is the case or not? What if the book is written in the country? As an example, is The Old Man and the Sea a Cuban book or American?
My project is based on where the author is from, not where they currently live. In my opinion, The Old Man and the Sea is unequivocally an American novel. It's written by an American citizen, who was born, raised, and educated in America, and who's first language is American-English.
My reply would be: your list, your rules. (just be consistent) I think "the rules" would really depend upon why you are doing this specific challenge, or goal. Is you goals just to tick off countries on a list for some social media goal (I hope not)? Is it to learn about a specific country, or culture? Is it to hear voices that are often quite different than American/UK/ Western European media-endorsed books? Isabelle Allende was born in Peru, but parents were Chilean, but now lives in California. One could argue that she could apply to any of those countries, depedning upon your specific goals.
I do not think that people who do not read at all should start with any of the let's say 100 best books published wheneven because usually those are not that easy to read when all you read in the past are the books that your teacher told you to read. And yes, they might be great books (because many people think they are really the best of all times/century) that may event change your life or attitude to it but the main reason to try making other people to read at all is just make them read ANY book, even if it is really bad. So I would just tell you that: read one book that you just heard about for example on Instagram or TV and just try to read it. I am sure that most of us who now read daily, once we were just people who did not read and then one simple book made us to read another book. And when we analyse what book that was, we probably say that is was so bad or borring or ridiculous etc but it just made you read more back then :) I really enjoy your podcasts, I am from Poland and I wish we have Polish people on RUclips who do the similar thing as you do :) good luck, good job!
You guys mentioned Bolano, and 2666 is another I DNF'd. Am I just not the audience for these types of books (also referring to the Tunnel), or do I need to revisit once my kids are older and I don't feel so much pressure to maximize what little free time I have? Maybe it's both. Or neither. I loved Moby Dick and I was terrified to read that novel for years based on its reputation, so maybe I'm only really cut out for a certain type of moderate-to-difficult read.
