We haven't had cable TV since 2005, have never used kcups, stopped buying plastic sandwich bags (wash and reuse milk bags instead), stopped getting haircuts in the 90s, stopped buying grocery store sized packages of most things in favour of big bulk buying e.g. 50 lbs., never buy food from restaurants, stopped buying pre-made food, stopped buying fresh vegetables in the winter using frozen or home canned from garden now, stopped buying canned beans as we buy dried beans and cook them in the instant pot... we have been moving backwards in consumerism since the 80s with no regrets. The list is longer than I could share. We live small - just over 600 square feet, but not tiny.

Don’t know if it’s the same in other countries but in the uk our libraries are wonderful. Pretty well any magazine can be downloaded for free- all the well known ones from celeb weeklies to heavyweight special interest are there. They also have free audio and ebooks to download , lots of well known contemporary writers as well as classics, children’s and so on. An amazing service. But I justify having physical books because full bookshelves make good insulation for cold walls. Thanks for your videos. Jan

I agree on most but I do love sending and receiving greeting cards. I make my own cards and know they'll probably wind up in the trash but I always include a personal message, not just a signature. I love getting handwritten notes and cards from my family and friends. I like to reread them especially if the sender is no longer alive. With electronic messaging and minimalism it's a dying thing but I treasure my little box of cards.

    • @myBIGtinyhouselife
      @myBIGtinyhouselife  3 года назад +2

My Mother raised me to include a personal note in a thank-you card--in all cards. When as a young adult I received my first pre-printed card with only a signature I thought "What's this? All it does is let me know the sender is alive." Yes, it's very much a dying thing. To receive a real letter is candy in the mailbox.

    • @hyggegirlstefx988

Kelly Jean Smith: Yes, receiving a personalized card is very special. Seeing someone's handwriting adds to the connection of the message being sent anytime but especially during Corona-geddon. Of course, this may just he me and I am fascinated by people's handwriting.

Agree completely with you on the cards and magazines. I recently moved into a new home and have changed my style of living to a more minimalistic approach so I have asked people to not give me gifts, it is very hard for people to wrap their heads around, but I find myself stressing over something someone thought would be great for me that I just didn't like or use. I can provide what I need. One of my best gifts recently that is wonderful is my digital frame from my grown children, they can upload photos to my digital frame and I so enjoy that. I no longer purchase plastic containers and try to very considerate of how long an item will take to decompose. I love my re-useable grocery bags and dishtowels go right in the washer so very little need to have paper towels as much as I used to.

I agree with you, but this year making my own Christnas card painting and having cards printed made it a much more engaging and exciting process. I even sent one to a RUclipsr in China who featured it on her vlog, mentioned that I had handpainted the (original) picture and said how pretty it was. So heartwarming to know how appreciated my effort is!

I downsized a couple moths ago that cute mobile home, about 950sq ft.... lots of room for me and the furkids! Still do Costco runs, store the paper products under my bed!! I very rarely buy a magazine these days ..... they're SO expensive! I've kept all my cards for years and years! 😊 I'm a sucker to send mail and receive letters. Agree about cable! I have "free" basic cable where I am, and that's enough, especially with the streaming service. Fyi, CTV.ca has free download with lots of movies etc. Same with CBC GEM!

I was just listening this in the background as I was puttering around home, but had to come here to say I so agree about the greeting cards! Between busy lives, they not only are expensive for what you get, but would then also give me anxiety to have to write them. Ditched that probably close to ten years ago now. Also canceled my remaining basic cable this past week. I'm in a condo in downtown Calgary and currently doing a low spend year. It's amazing how quickly the savings add up.

I agree with you on saving time and money on
these"expendable" items but I do love getting
cards from family. I really miss the library for
getting books and magazines and have been
rereading books or "gulp!" buying books. My
daughter buys all her books online and says
it's great for to have Kobo? to have on holiday.
That is when we could go on hoiday safely!
I'm getting so sick of this Covid induced
hibernation - I'll be glad when we can just go
out and browse the old bookshops or second
-hand shops! Like yourself,I simply don't,

You give me inspiration to do more purging. I used to collect owls and thimbles, but have stopped. My biggest purchase is scrapbooking materials. Fortunately I have one room in my house just for this hobby. Another thing I hate to spend money on are kitchen gadgets and appliances. They take up space and don't get used. My husband hates for me to give away too many items. Thanks for your videos. I do live in a small house, but if it were just, a tiny house would suit me just fine.

I don't buy napkins or paper towel, swiffers, plastic trash bags, spray cleaners - have replaced these with cloth napkins, sponge towels, reuse bags that come with foods, use an old sock for the swiffer, then just pop it in the wash. Make my own vinegar cleaner. It's amazing how much money a person can spend on those things - and the space they take up!

Over the past few years I’ve been downsizing and embracing a more minimalistic way of life that works well for myself and my husband. Other than the greeting cards, I do each other these things. A few other areas I have made changes to are not buying new clothing unless I absolutely have to. If I buy an item of clothing, it is to replace something that is worn out, if I bring in a new piece, I donate another item. I quit buying perfume and body sprays until I used up all of the miscellaneous scents that I had. I find recipes for personal care items and make them myself to stretch or replace store bought items. I keep containers from these and reuse. I don’t buy small trash bags; I repurpose any plastic bags that I may have and just empty the smaller wastebaskets into the larger one.

Good for you Adelina! I have never spent money on most of the items you mention - though I, too, was a big house and garden magazine junkie. Before Covid I could go to my local Reuse Centre and find the most recent issue of several house magazines there free for the taking - and I could return them when I finished reading them. Now I create my own art and spend almost no time reading magazines. I painted a picture and had Christmas cards printed from it this year to send to my many friends around the world, and got great feedback. It supported my local print shop too! It is quite easy to live in way less if we curb our appetites (I have taught very successful classes on this) and I think this video will help others see the possibilities of living well while spending less. I really relate to you in a lot of ways, and enjoy your videos!🇨🇦❣

I'm right there with you on everything except Costco. I only use my Costco membership to buy gas, for prescription optical services, and to occasionally buy a big ticket item that is discounted. I never buy groceries or do any impulse shopping there. If you use Costco this way you come out way ahead. The savings of at least $200 per year on gas more than offsets the annual $60 membership fee.

I no longer buy a lot of the items you mentioned but I’ve almost decided not to buy paper towels anymore. I have a sewing machine and I know fairly well how to sew just about anything I want. So I found a RUclips video showing how to make “paper” towels out of material with snaps. You just put the snaps on the corners and roll them up and toss them in the laundry once you’ve used them. I’ve got to wash towels and wash clothes anyway. Might as well throw my “paper” towels in also. And repeat, roll them up again for next time. And I don’t need feminine napkins anymore but there’s also a RUclips video on how to make those also and just wash them and reuse them also. People spend so much money on paper products that just end up in the landfills. Now if I could just make enough tp 🧻 to get a family of six through two weeks. Ha, don’t think I could possibly have enough material to do that. Also looking into making reusable sandwich and snack bags out of material that has a waxy substance on one side. I thought about taking an old chip bag and using that as the liner so it can be cleaned and reused. Again too much waste in plastic bags being thrown in the landfills and money out of our pockets. I really like repurposing items for other uses in order to save so much waste. I like watching a lady from Denton Texas that goes by the name Breakfast ( I don’t think she spells it the same as you and I) but her real name is Kelly. Anyway she goes dumpster diving and saves things from the landfills and then sells what she can. If she finds food she puts it in her local road side pantries so that those that are hungry can use the food. I’m too scared to go alone to dumpster dive in my area. Too much meanness around for a woman to be out behind businesses by herself.

I stopped buying a membership to Sam’s Club. We were only getting two things there consistently. We actually save money on the membership by buying those things from our local grocery store. I got rid of my coffee maker and use a pour over. I love the way the coffee tastes. I do buy in bulk. We have a basement so I store things in cold storage, so that is saving us money. We bought a side of beef and have done some canning so I don’t need to buy those things from the store. Some of your ideas I could implement. Thanks for the video.

I stopped having cable nearly 20 yrs ago. Don’t miss it a bit. Love books but switched to Audible. I’ve now switched to Kindle bc I get lulled to sleep listening to Audible. With Kindle I need to interact & be alive while reading so I don’t doze off. I need to start downsizing but both my husband & I have debilities (which I won’t go into) so that’s extremely hard. So no extras in the house without at least 2-3 things donated or sold. We’re definitely a work in progress, both he and I. Keep good thoughts/prayers going out to us. We both have terminal illnesses😔Sorry to tell you this Adelina. Truly sorry.
    Another great vid.
Been meaning to tell you that I’ve followed vegan chefs/home cooks who don’t live in tiny homes and ppl who have channels focused on tiny homes who happen to be vegan but they don’t share recipes.
Your idea to do a vegan vid and a tiny home/minimalist etc vid each week is a unique niche that I’ve not seen anyone else fill in over 4 yrs of watching these types of vids.
    Making dragon noodles Tuesday evening.😋

Thank you for sharing your list, it is quite inspiring and edifying! I have also gotten rid of many of the same items/habits or are in the process of doing so in recent months as I hope to downsize and "frugalize" more in 2021. I have been a "card sender" over the years, but listening to your reasoning, I am going to reconsider the habit. I used to make cards with great care, until I realized that most people read them and "circular filed" them right away so I resorted to store-bought cards....but you're right, they are also quite expensive! Maybe it'll be letters, emails, and phone calls going forward!

Love your channel, 1 cos you’re cdn and hard to find female cdn tiny housers as the movement hasn’t caught on hugely, at least not in Atlantic Canada. We stopped cable 4 yrs ago, hubby said 3 months (he was a tv aholic lol, I barely watched) well still don’t watch. I as well use library unless it’s a book I really need ie helping keep ca away (had b ca and want it to stay away). We don’t have a keurig any longer. We do have Costco but we should get our son or daughter to shop for us. We still have wayyyy too much stuff (our house we downsized to is 970 sq ft and no shed.so garage is packed. But we will get there. Hubby suffers from depression anxiety so when he is up to it we do some as mostly tools etc
Thanks for the videos! I need to go back and watch a few I have missed. Happy new yr

I'm in a 3,000sq' house but even I have cut out almost everything you mentioned. I'm still buying silk coffee creamer (we deal with a cashew allergy in the house) and K-cups. I do have one of the reusable cups that can be used with it though, so maybe I will look into actually using it! I'm trying to cut back on buying fresh produce by growing my own. As a vegan I eat a lot of produce, so in the summer I can cut back on what I buy. Like you, I too and in Canada. Oh, I have also been doing my grocery shopping online, which saves money since I'm not making a lot of spur of the moment purchases!

You and I have the exact same list of things we no longer buy. What a great savings this has been. I still occasionally buy greeting cards but now get them from the Dollar Store. I also collected things in the past, and now have boxes of my mother's collectibles sitting in my garage. Yikes! It would be great to hear how you got rid of your collectibles and excess clothing, housewares, etc. when you transitioned to your tiny house. Another good video, thanks. If you are looking for more to stream there are a lot of interesting things on Knowledge Network and similar websites you can register on for free. The one thing I do subscribe to is a couple of card formats for birthdays and special occasions. I used to buy boxes of Christmas cards and 5 years ago promised myself to use them up until there were none left. It feels so good to have used them all and have Email, Text or Messenger to contact everyone. I don't do FB anymore so I try to make them as personal as possible. I always liked the ritual of card writing. They prefer it as well. Looking forward to your next video. 😀🥰😀

Love your You Tube Videos--it was the first one I subscribed to!!! I have been on a mission to decrease stuff. I have dispensed with everything but the greeting cards because my daughter actually works for Hallmark. If I could now move out all the things in my small apartment that do not belong to me (inherited from Mother, storing for son, holding onto until I can get them to my brother, etc), there might be room for me. Although I have more square feet of wasted space in my apartment, I was very envious of the amount of storage you have in your tiny home because your kitchen is so much better organized. The apartment I rent has several small cabinets, but not enough space for more than 1 small appliance each. Wishing you all the best in the New Year from Kansas.

I still have my Costco membership. We’ve used it for my daughter to make several large purchases; Costco always has the best price on gasoline; I used to buy dog food there, but during the early lockdown of the pandemic in California, they ran out and couldn’t get anymore, so I got started with on online/delivered kibble for my 3 furry friends. I still send some greeting cards, often purchased from the dollar store or created from my scrapbooking stash. But I’m with you on everything else you mentioned. I also have a question I ask myself before I purchase things: How long will it be before I want/need to get rid of this, and how will I accomplish that?
