  • A rump (also called a bum pad/roll) is an undergarment that creates the iconic wider hips of the 18th century. This is essential to creating that silhouette of the 1700s. I needed a new bum roll, so I decided to do a video on how I make my own. There are several different types of rumps, but this is my favorite shape to wear underneath my 18th century dresses.

Happy to see another person who doesn’t measure or pin on the regular but guesstimates and wings it! Not always great results but that’s how I do it too.

Do you have the final version of the pattern you can share?

Little tip. It seems counter intuitive, but I've found things turn inside right better if you press the seam flat first, then sneak the iron into it and press it a bit. Took me YEARS to internalize PRESS EVERYTHING AT EVERY STEP, but it really is true that it makes life easier. I haven't hat to pin pick open a seam in ages. very rarely at a corner sometimes, but never along the run. Also, question? Why did you choose to not just make the ties and the waistband all one piece? Is that just preference, or is there a structural reason?

Thanks! Just the info I was looking for. I have drafted a pattern and was looking for some direction as to fit, before I cut any fabric. I can see that I also need to go a bit deeper in the front. I’m thinking that I might want to shorten the very back a little and stuff a bit more to keep the bulk higher on my rump. What do you think.
