Our science guy Steve Spangler is getting ready to set sail with 100 teachers to explore the science of Alaska’s inside passage. Today, Steve shares some of the clean-up efforts used by scientists as they examine the impact of oil spills.

Wonderful
Living near where the Gulf spill happened in 2010, I can say this could have been the best method for the cleanup instead of the polymer they used little bags of HAIR! The oil stuck to the individual hairs and were able to be removed from the gulf from ships. Great demonstration!
Yeah that never used it right they used human hair right, how is it down there?
This is cool
what type of polymer is that
Where can I buy this , is it available in market?
What polymer is this
Is this polymer safe for animals to eat? Also, like some other comments mentioned, if an animal eats some of the polymer that has the oil around it, would it hurt the animal?
that's cool
What is that powder u sprinkled on oil spill
At 2:22
Gee Wiz!
Just one question. Can you recover the oil from the adsorbed polymer? Or else it creates another environmental hazard.
That's why he said it can be burned for energy recovery or you can incinerate like trash.
what is the powder
In the Gulf they just sank the oil with Corexit to the sea floor.
Because if you can't see it, then it's not a problem anymore.
Wait, so does that mean that you could use that pink precipitate to make oil back again? Like reusing it?
if that was true we would probably use the polymer to store it so to prevent the spills ever happening assuming the special polymer was also reusable
What is that tube thingy filled with it called?
+jadacrow A tube sock
82th t
thimbnail oil spin
new recipe for floam
This envirobond 403 is synthetic or natural polymer?
This is not envirobond
This is OS powder
Hello
''what's the powder called?
Oil solutions powder
Where can i get this polymer from?
You can buy it from the web site
@@osspillkits can you specify it... As I am in India. Please tell which site.
go to this site, then store, then OS powder.
@@osspillkits this site is not for India people. It is only for Canadian and USA citizens.. Please help
@@osspillkits what is the common name of this polymer
Its called Enviro-bond
Its oil solutions. Aka aqua ancap on the epa.gov listing.
where can I buy the power?
A 1:1 ratio, that's great, so assuming the spill is contained, you would put a million gallons of that polymer on a million gallon spill. Of course, large spills are never effectively contained, so you would need even more polymer. How would you recover a million gallons of oil-soaked polymer, and how would you transport it? Where would you dispose of it?
At least there is something that shows progress in science. Someone spent hours in the lab to develop this polymer you are criticizing.
I want to know why using soup is not good?
Assuming you meant soap, It will form a scum which if denser than ocean water will just sink to the bottom. Just like washing oil/grease on clothes with soap.
Things that don't catch on 😢😔
Okay, now we are going to add more plastic to the ocean willingly, a polymer is tiny bits of plastic.
you're right, we should let the oil kill the animals its own special way
@@rigelspradling2008, you're a special kind of stupid. lol
@@rigelspradling2008 ruclips.net/video/sPgLJrk0sGQ/видео.html How about let's fight it with something more natural that will break down. Plastic will stick around that is like fighting fire with fire we will change one problem with another and our ocean really does not need more plastic in it even worse micro scopic plastics that we cant see.. oh yeah smart.
ruclips.net/video/ZFgpudNSArI/видео.html
anybody know what kind of polymer is that?
+hasan ism Maxipad polymers ;)
You can see it on epa.gov search oil solutions
Hehehe 69 degrees...
xd
At this point in time No oil should be sold to human being without the ability to clean it up safe and effectively.
Why not this in sandbags then line the beaches with them
Joel Woodward then they wouldn't be called "Sand Bags" lol but i get what your saying
+Caden Redpath would douchbags work??
+Jeremiah Tallant No polymerbags
+Tiffany Barnes I forgot what I was even trying to go with here haha I think I was trying to come up with a name for the "bags." I'm pretty sure I was high when I wrote this.
Jeremiah Tallant Lol
The news anchor is so annoying

very nice comment
