This song perfectly describes how I feel about myself sometimes. I never thought that I could relate to music so much, until I found Green Day :) I can never thank these guys enough just for being themselves and following their dreams.
It's amazing that when I'm feeling horrible about myself, I put this song on and it makes me feel better because there's people out there who understand and are like "Fuck that, be yourself and fucking embrace it"... and those people are Green Day.
this was the first Green Day song i ever heard. and Insomniac was the first album i owned ever. i was like... 7? Green Day continues to be my favorite Non Metal band
SRX069xXx Well how would you define punk? It is quite a grey area, and if you ask me, I think 1039/SOSH was more "punk" but maybe we define it differently?
+Najeeb al-shabibi I think insomniac had that angry, punk sound. 1039/smooth was punk cause it had no major label attached to the album. And people blame green day for exposing punk but it's really nirvana's fault
I had never read the lyrics to this song and I was just practicing singing this. And I started dying laughing at “I perfected the science of the idiot” XD
This describes me PERFECTLY! Listening to this song...I'm not even one BIT sad. It's fucking amazing that Billie Joe wrote about his innermost feelings. He'a fucking awesome! GREEN DAY FOREVERRRR!-3
This song seems SOOOOOo familiar but I dont remember listening to it. I mean I recognize it and it feels like I've listened to it my whole life I just dont remember
Great lyrics ! Pretty much describes myself. if anybody asked me "describe the worst about yourself" I'd tell him to listen to Armatage shanks, Walking contradiction, Brain stew, Panic song and Basket Case ! He doesn"t know me but BJA and I are soulmates !
The biggest mystery of green day Isn't what happened to cigarettes and valentines, it's not if they are the network... IT'S WHAT THE FUCK THEY ARE SAYING AT 1:12
This song desribes me like no other song. I don't even feel sad, I feel fucking happy that BJA wrote this, and that I can relate 100%! Green Day, from the start until now, still the fucking best band in the world. Just sayin'.
@Geekstinkbreath123 I'm talking about Dookie lyrically compared to Insomniac, I'm just emphasizing my point on how much the writing changed and using even the 1 year gap between Dookie and Insomniac instead of the 4 year one with Kerplunk as people just say, it's called growing up. I bought these albums at the time as they came out.
Of course Billie Joe wrote the lyrics by himself. Maybe it's just that he wanted to write about his most dark and hidden feelings. You know, the kind of feelings we all have but also the ones nobody likes to talk about. After all we all have a dark side.
My favorite green day albums in order 1. Dookie 2. Insomniac 3. Warning 4. American idiot 5. Uno 6. Dos 7. Tre 8. Revelation radio 9. 21 century breakdown
1)American Idiot (Masterpiece! Every song is so fucking good, i know every lyric of that album 10/10) 2)Insomniac (Although not THAT heavy, love the heaviness to it. Like "Dookie" gone punk rock. 9.8/10) 3)Nimrod (This album has it all. Catchy af songs, 2 hard rock songs with the simple message of "Fuck you", and even surf rock. Can't argue with surf rock. And to top it all of, an acoustic song. Super bold move. 9.6/10) 4)Dookie (This is my go to album when i'm feeling down. Always brings a smile to my face. I just can't help but get up and jam while listening to Dookie. 9.4/10) 5)21st CB (Their most ambitious work. And it paid off! To the amazing title track "21st CB" to the rock ballad "21 guns" to spanish like song "Peacekeeper". Awesome. 9.2/10) 6)Stop, Drop and Roll (Green Day and 70's rock = amazing combo. I wish they could make a 2nd album, and NO, Dos ISN'T their 2nd album, i refuse that. 9/10) 7)Kerplunk (Really great album. Although kinda same-ish to 1039-SOSH, it is way better. I always laugh when i hear "80" and "One For The Razorback" because i jsut imagine shy Billie writing these songs for Addie and being lovestruck. Also very catchy songs like "One of My Lies". 8.7/10) 8)Revrad (Wow, dynamic comeback for Green Day! Just 12 songs to rock to, no super complex Jesus of Suburbia Viva la Gloria stuff, just 12 songs. The major drawback is the lyrics. God, some of them are so cringy. 8.3/10) 9)Money Money 2020 (Who would have thought that Green Day and futuristic sound effects went together? Although like 1-2 songs are skippable, the rest of the album is really good. 8.1/10) 10)Shenanigans (I'll be honest, the only songs i have on my phone are "I wanna be on TV", "Do Da Da", "Ha Ha, you're Dead" and "Maria". It's not that the other songs are bad, they're just not really jammable 7.8/10) 11)Tre (The best out of the trilogy and it's such wasted potential. This could have been an album that way more fans would like were it had just 3-4 better songs. 7.6/10) 12)1039/SOSH (I just can't get over that awful drumming. It's holding back so much of the whole album. Some songs are kinda same-y, but songs like "At the library", "Going To Palasacqua" "I was There" save it 7.4/10) 13)Dos (Jeez, "Fuck Time"? Why would you put titles like these in this album? Also nightlife, imo, isnt that bad. Yeah the rapping is repulsive, but the bassline is catchy af. And honestly, "Amy" saved this album BIG TIME. 7.2/10) 14)Uno (Wannabe Dookie. That's it. Not bad album if it came from awful bands like All Time Low, but not that good for Green Day standards. It's not unlistenable though. I can get behind on some of the songs in this. Also i admit im biased, Green Day is my favourite band. 7/10)
+Awsumdude123 Mine's a bit weird: 1. American Idiot 2. Kerplunk 3. Dookie 4. 21st Century Breakdown 5. Nimrod 6. Warning 7. 1039/ sosh + 39/smooth (tied) 8. Insmoniac 9. Tre 10. Uno 11. Dos
1. nimrod 2. kerplunk 3. rev rad 4. dookie 5. american idiot BUT I REALLY LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIR ALBUMS LIKE IM DONE WITH THIS BAND BC ALL OF THEIR SONGS ARE PERFECT

AninaKathryn same
U make cry
AninaKathryn that's the magic of green day
Same for me :) I sometimes feel I understand myself better thanks to songs like that
just please don't start doing speed and coke like they were around this era.
It's amazing that when I'm feeling horrible about myself, I put this song on and it makes me feel better because there's people out there who understand and are like "Fuck that, be yourself and fucking embrace it"... and those people are Green Day.
Amanda M It's that Green Day has this something, it's like Billie Joe knows exactly how I feel or felt. They are just incredible.
This song is me, has been for decades. One of my all-time favorites.
this was the first Green Day song i ever heard. and Insomniac was the first album i owned ever. i was like... 7? Green Day continues to be my favorite Non Metal band
Same exact situation to me. I could copy and paste your comment and it would apply perfectly to me. I think metal heads love insomniac.
I remember I first heard American Idiot, it changed my life, only later I found out that they had lots of albums in past!
I think Insomniac is the most punk album of Green Day.
I think Insomniac is even too awesome for punk..it should be named a different special genre invited by GD :)
Either that or Dookie. I think that Insomniac is the closest too.
I'd argue Kerplunk since it's kind of a more raw version of Dookie.
I love how the bass is on this song. The whole album as a matter of fact. Insomniac is slept on criminally
stranded... lost inside myself.
@Samuel L. Jackson fuck you
Fuck you idiot
I had never read the lyrics to this song and I was just practicing singing this. And I started dying laughing at “I perfected the science of the idiot” XD
I remember watching this on the 1994 MTV music video awards!
The best start to the best album.
green day has got to be my favorite band and this is one of my favorite songs ever
This shits going straight onto the funeral playlist
was thinking the same
I'm listening to the first song off of each Green Day album and holy fuck it's amazing. At the Library, 2000, Burnout, this are all amazing.
Harry Dykhoff Same, I love that all of their albums have such a strong beginning and ending (especially 39/Smooth, Kerplunk, Dookie and Insomniac).
This song is so relatable..
This song is the best when you feel so depressed like I am right now
Depressed atm and yea its the best haha
Sry to hear that. Way past cool pfp btw
One of the most underrated albums in history
when I end it I want this song to be the last thing I listen to.

If ever there was an anthem for my teenage years....

Fantastic lyrics
This song sums up my life pretty well.
Green Day are prophets! Amen!
I can't believe I don't have Insomniac yet.... i didn't know it had so many songs that I absolutely love!
The biggest mystery of green day Isn't what happened to cigarettes and valentines, it's not if they are the network... IT'S WHAT THE FUCK THEY ARE SAYING AT 1:12
mark bates I'm pretty sure it's just gibberish.

best albums insomniac :thumbup
insomniac is grossly underrated
@Geekstinkbreath123 I'm talking about Dookie lyrically compared to Insomniac, I'm just emphasizing my point on how much the writing changed and using even the 1 year gap between Dookie and Insomniac instead of the 4 year one with Kerplunk as people just say, it's called growing up. @fatriff Well, as he grew up, he matured and therefore his music matured with him. That's why the lyrics sound so different.
Cleverbot recommended this song to me. Epic.
I've been looking and I have no idea.
nice
Sick of everything woah, sick of everybody woah? Never could figure out those lyrics and never seen them anywhere
they're not even printed in the booklet my guy, the lyrics printed there end with "self loathing freak and introverted deviot"
IMO
1.Warning
2.39/smooth
3.Kerplunk
4.Dookie
5.Nimrod
No insomniac...
Your opinion is wrong.
FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sleep a very very whoa
@Dreamterrible No, it is branded. Even look on the lyrics booklet. It says branded not brain dead.
Anyone notice how the drums in the beginning sound a little bit like the intro drums for Down With the Sickness?
Of course Billie Joe wrote the lyrics by himself. Maybe it's just that he wanted to write about his most dark and hidden feelings. You know, the kind of feelings we all have but also the ones nobody likes to talk about. After all we all have a dark side.
Armitage Shanks is a sanitaryware manufacturer just outside Rugeley, Staffordshire, England. I fail to see the relevance. Cracking tune mind you.
Green day saw the name repeatedly while on tour in England
It seems to be a metaphor for 'life going down the drain' type of thing. It also sounds cool.
+Reiss Gilmour Yeah, they make drain cleaner and shit.
+Green DayPlayer94 They make shit?
KingBowserVlog ...No...

there aren't any officially printed lyrics for that part as far as I know, just various fan guesses.
Pretty sure it’s just harmony
