My moment of clarity happened when Elena decided to kill off an Original.When you kill an Original, everyone in that Original’s line of descendants dies. That means if someone figured out how to kill Klaus, Katherine, Damon, Stefan, and precious Elena would all die. To save one person, because “I can’t lose anyone else,” and to fulfill Jeremy’s hunter’s mark so that SHE could get the cure, Elena killed an Original and by proxy, thousands of vampires-good and evil, without pausing to consider that somewhere out there may have been a girl just like her, in love with a “good” vampire who woke up the next morning to find him dead.And there must be people whose parents/life partner/best friend/siblings are vampires from Kol's bloodline who would have no idea how they suddenly died. Then, there’s her interaction with her friends. Caroline repeatedly warns her off Damon because she has experience with Damon, who compelled, controlled, and abused her, used her as a human blood bag, and tried to kill her at least twice. But Elena doesn’t want to hear it, because she loves Damon. Once again, it’s all about her. I love her acting. It is extremely hard to play two opposite characters simultaneously. She has a lot of respect in my eyes. She won People's Choice awards many times and she followed her heart and left the show. I really love her courage.

John Dohn how have they gone through more than her? No character has lost as many family members and friends as she has - her adopted parents, her biological parents, Jenna, Jeremy, Damon, Bonnie, Alaric etc. It is ridiculous the amount of people she lost and most would have broken down and given up completely. But she turned out a lot better as a vampire. Had a lot of love interest and became a badass in her own right. (Damon, Matt, Tyler, that guy from college, Stephen and klaus) The only true lose she went through was her mother and fathers death.

I dont think she gets all that hate because she is a crybaby as you say. People hate her because she chose Damon over Stefan. Like she kissed Damon while she was still with Stefan, slept with him the very day she broke up with Stefan. Also in Season 4 she came up with the idea of killing Kol and along with him his entire bloodline of tens and thousands of vampires. So she's this sweet, compassionate protagonist who is willing to commit a genocide to get what she wants. There are many other instances where she acted in a selfish manner, especially after becoming a vampire. But anyway I have to agree that Elena is very strong and brave.
She's was the only one who was most human and appreciated and fought for a human life. Which is why when she turned off her humanity and changed we were lost and hated her. And then she turned it on and got her happiness I loved her all over again

Hating Elena's character seems a trend now. I've never understood all the Elena's hate. Her character annoyed me sometimes and she did some bad choices,but every character did the same and they didn't get so much hate. I think one of the times I really didn't like Elena was when she and Jeremy decided to kill Kol and not for him in particular (I apprecieted his character in The Originals not in Tvd) but because they killed his whole sireline and I'm sure in Kol's sireline there were vampires who tried to be "decent people" like Elena herself,Stefan,Caroline,Josh of the Originals etc...etc...Anyway I liked Elena's character a lot. I think she had a lot of different aspects.

honestly after nina/elena left the show, it felt so different and i respect her leaving. i just wished she didn’t. she honestly didn’t deserve sm hate. she went through sm and w/o her character in the show it wouldn’t be tvd . this is imo btw i respect everyone’s own opinion.
I just love it when a person is going through a breakup, she or he cries his/her balls out and literally thinks it is the end of the world, yet everyone criticizes Elena for crying after all the DEATHS in her family. I get she cries a lot comparing to Katherine, but since when everybody has the same reaction ? Same personality ? And fyi Katherine IS a survivor, but she did a lot of unecessary thing that just made her stupid (being crazy over Stefan like seriously ? Running after a guy ? And torturing Elena's family) Stop comparing Elena with Katherine or Caroline or Bonnie. Technically Elena was only a vampire for 3 seasons, Bonnie's been a witch since season 1 and Caroline a vampire since season 2, it was OBVIOUS that they would handle matters way more differently. And Elena is the type of soft person so she cries a lot, it is her way of expressing her emotions (just like Tyler punches everything). I get that she becomes a bit selfish in season 5 especially and that she kills people that did not deserve it, but did Jenna deserves to die ? I just think that with everything she had gone through she became a bit of a self-centered person (I will judge after watching season 5), but if Nina had stayed, I think Elena would have changed for the better. I just think that people seem to forget that she has gone through so much and that her way of dealing with it is completely different from the others, and that her personality changed in bad and good ways. Everybody is flawed, everybody (in the show) killed, backstabbed, threatened, manipulate, but in the end, who hasn't done any mistakes ? I would probably be pissed if everything Elena did was right, like she is always perfect. Maybe in the show, they made it seem like she didn't do anything wrong, but like I said, maybe it was because Nina was leaving, so everyone didn't really paid attention anymore. It was two late for a "redemption" arc for Elena, even though I would have loved see her become human again and REALLY live her life. Anyways, that was my rant.

My moment of clarity happened when Elena decided to kill off an Original.When you kill an Original, everyone in that Original’s line of descendants dies. That means if someone figured out how to kill Klaus, Katherine, Damon, Stefan, and precious Elena would all die. To save one person, because “I can’t lose anyone else,” and to fulfill Jeremy’s hunter’s mark so that SHE could get the cure, Elena killed an Original and by proxy, thousands of vampires-good and evil, without pausing to consider that somewhere out there may have been a girl just like her, in love with a “good” vampire who woke up the next morning to find him dead.And there must be people whose parents/life partner/best friend/siblings are vampires from Kol's bloodline who would have no idea how they suddenly died.
Then, there’s her interaction with her friends. Caroline repeatedly warns her off Damon because she has experience with Damon, who compelled, controlled, and abused her, used her as a human blood bag, and tried to kill her at least twice. But Elena doesn’t want to hear it, because she loves Damon. Once again, it’s all about her. The “true” Elena comes out when she turns her humanity off and tries to kill Caroline - many times, because Caroline irritates her. Then, when her humanity comes back on, Elena doesn’t want to talk about it, because SHE can’t deal with it. Gee, I’m sorry, sweetie… I’m sorry you tried to kill your best friend multiple times and can’t talk about this seriously traumatic experience with the person you really, really hurt, because it pains YOU too much to remember it. It’s your responsibility to suck it up and deal with it, because Caroline matters more than you do right now.
Then there’s Bonnie, who has been dead all summer. Yet somehow, in spite of sending numerous texts and e-mails in which Bonnie never actually physically calls her back, Elena doesn’t concern herself with Bonnie until she needs something from her-for Bonnie to come back and heal Stefan’s amnesia.* Way to be a friend, Elena. Oh, and while you’re at it, why not try and help Stefan get his memory back by acting out all YOUR important moments with him, instead of, you know, taking him around Mystic Falls and talking about all HIS important moments? Caroline was a self centered person in the beginning and I hated her. But she turned out a lot better as a vampire. Had a lot of love interest and became a badass in her own right. (Damon, Matt, Tyler, that guy from college, Stephen and klaus) The only true lose she went through was her mother and fathers death.

I wonder if all these people that hate her have felt the pain she has. She has been through a lot of difficult situations. She lost her parents, she found out she was adopted and her biological parents died too, she lost her brother, her aunt, her guardian, her best friend, her boyfriend and her first love. She also didn't have the chance to see her best friends and Stefan happy. So now I hope you reconsider your opinion about her because she is NOT a crybaby but a real SURVIVOR.
I dont think she gets all that hate because she is a crybaby as you say. People hate her because she chose Damon over Stefan. Like she kissed Damon while she was still with Stefan, slept with him the very day she broke up with Stefan. Also in Season 4 she came up with the idea of killing Kol and along with him his entire bloodline of tens and thousands of vampires. So she's this sweet, compassionate protagonist who is willing to commit a genocide to get what she wants. There are many other instances where she acted in a selfish manner, especially after becoming a vampire. But anyway I have to agree that Elena is very strong and brave.

Hating Elena's character seems a trend now. I've never understood all the Elena's hate. Her character annoyed me sometimes and she did some bad choices,but every character did the same and they didn't get so much hate. I think one of the times I really didn't like Elena was when she and Jeremy decided to kill Kol and not for him in particular (I apprecieted his character in The Originals not in Tvd) but because they killed his whole sireline and I'm sure in Kol's sireline there were vampires who tried to be "decent people" like Elena herself,Stefan,Caroline,Josh of the Originals etc...etc...Anyway I liked Elena's character a lot. I think she had a lot of different aspects.

I just love it when a person is going through a breakup, she or he cries his/her balls out and literally thinks it is the end of the world, yet everyone criticizes Elena for crying after all the DEATHS in her family. I get she cries a lot comparing to Katherine, but since when everybody has the same reaction ? Same personality ? And fyi Katherine IS a survivor, but she did a lot of unecessary thing that just made her stupid (being crazy over Stefan like seriously ? Running after a guy ? And torturing Elena's family) Stop comparing Elena with Katherine or Caroline or Bonnie. Technically Elena was only a vampire for 3 seasons, Bonnie's been a witch since season 1 and Caroline a vampire since season 2, it was OBVIOUS that they would handle matters way more differently. And Elena is the type of soft person so she cries a lot, it is her way of expressing her emotions (just like Tyler punches everything). I get that she becomes a bit selfish in season 5 especially and that she kills people that did not deserve it, but did Jenna deserves to die ? I just think that with everything she had gone through she became a bit of a self-centered person (I will judge after watching season 5), but if Nina had stayed, I think Elena would have changed for the better. I just think that people seem to forget that she has gone through so much and that her way of dealing with it is completely different from the others, and that her personality changed in bad and good ways. Everybody is flawed, everybody (in the show) killed, backstabbed, threatened, manipulate, but in the end, who hasn't done any mistakes ? I would probably be pissed if everything Elena did was right, like she is always perfect. Maybe in the show, they made it seem like she didn't do anything wrong, but like I said, maybe it was because Nina was leaving, so everyone didn't really paid attention anymore. It was two late for a "redemption" arc for Elena, even though I would have loved see her become human again and REALLY live her life. Anyways, that was my rant.
