Since so many seem to be missing my point (despite my laborious explanation of this at the beginning of the video) I’ll be pinning this comment so I don’t have to keep answering comments which make this misconception.
The point of this video is to call out Ubisoft for saying false things in their marketing that have potential to damage the reputation of the games I love and deeply care about, NOT to criticize Shadows as a video game per se. Yes, I point out how Shadows is inferior to classic AC’s parkour, but this is not actually a criticism of the game so much as it is of Ubisoft because, again, as I said in the video, Shadows _does not care about making parkour engaging_ and it’s doing so doesn’t inherently make it a bad game. The problem is that Ubisoft’s marketing has basically been acting like the game _does_ actually care about making the movement engaging, and now the game’s creative director claims it goes “back to the roots”. That is why this video was made. Not just to criticize Shadows for being not-Assassin’s-Creed.
Also, I am well aware that the odds of AC ever really going “back to the roots” is the limit as n goes to infinity of 1 over n. I have stopped purchasing and playing AC games because I know they’re not for me anymore. Again, as I said in the video, I am here defending the reputation of classic Creed, and, although I say some stuff about influences on future games as well, I’m not under the impression that my making this video is gonna stop Ubisoft from releasing the AC1 20th anniversary RPG remake with a Kassandra cameo in 2027. Assassin’s Creed is dead. Ubisoft, dona ei requiem.
This is, like, the third time they’ve said they were "returning to the roots." Is anyone even fooled by that claim anymore?
So real, but apparently so
Trust them dude they'll definitely make it classic AC again!
when was the first? i only remember them doing it with mirage
@@Auricaliosprobably Valhalla trying to appeal old fans with half assed gimmicks like returning social stealth which was hardly present in the game at all
@@Auricalios Valhalla, Mirage, and now Shadows all had the line "returning to the series’ roots" used at least once during the marketing.
I haven't finished the video yet so i'm not sure you mention it, but i find it hilarious that real life shinobi blended in with the people to accomplish their job meanwhile they're going for the Hollywood ninja approach when the historically accurate one would fit perfectly with real AC.
I don’t really go into that here but that is also very true
100% Agree. I wish this was more talked about ❤
ironically would be interesting for Yasuke, imagine some foreigner bumbling around pretending to suck at Japanese then boom he stabs u
Bro don't understand the AC games have been about historical fiction.... like wtf are you even saying bro?
@@HiddenShinobiAC i'm saying social stealth would fit the setting perfectly.
Yeah they were always historical fiction but stayed pretty close to real life, usually the stuff we had concrete info on would be accurate in the games, the fiction would be the rest.
"new parkour subtleties" made me laugh like an insane person
Still looking for those. Where. Where are they.
Yea that’s nuts. And then they added the prone dodge as one of them. Like bruh tell me you weren’t completely reaching with this entire piece 💀💀💀
The problem fundamentally comes from a dilution of the franchise pillars over time. AC started as a Prince of Persia spinoff. Those are the actual "roots" they keep talking about. It was an open world built on a platformer. So the movement was evidently core to the gameplay.
But now, all the top talent has left the company. Darby McDevitt is probably the last of the old guard that hasn't quit or been fired, and even he only joined the franchise with Revelations (Still love him though. The story of Valhalla was one of the narrative highpoints of the whole franchise in an otherwise mediocre game). The current devs on the franchise are not building on Prince of Persia. They are building on top of previous AC games. So we have RPGs built on top of open world games.
And in that, the core pillars of the franchise get lost. Social stealth gets flanderized to just stealth. Parkour is simplified to exploration. And combat, what was once the worst and least unique pillar of the franchise is the only one that has seen any love since 2017, probably because it's the easiest to iterate on.
Everyone at Ubisoft knows stealth, combat and parkour are the core pillars of the franchise. That's the easy part to determine, and why they are all tokenly included in the games. But the ways in which they all come together at this point are completely removed from the original vision of Patrice Desilets. You can have all the ingredients of a dish, but if you mix them in the wrong quantities or in the wrong order, it doesn't matter. You still made the wrong dish.
Very poignant analysis as always. Appreciate you checking out the vid!
For being the easiest to iterate it feels like they still barely iterated on it ever since odyssey. Only thing Valhalla got over odyssey's flashy skill animations (that in Valhalla's case are often less productive for raw dps than just continuing to hit normally, so only skills with utility mattered) was trickshotting people with your bow mid combo, which...yeah it's satisfying but why would anyone ever pull out their bow in a brawl like this? Then Mirage is adapting it back to the old grounded parry-and-counter shtick, which as much as it is a "return" is functionally a downgrade.
Ubisoft spends too much time stripping the pillars and redoing them from the ground up to ever actually iterate on them for very long.
Bro when do u stop ur hibernation and drop another banger man 😭😭😭
Can’t decide what’s worse: Ubisoft running the same con for the third time or people still taking the bait?
Utrumque
Do we not feel that Mirage was actually a return to the roots? Maybe I'm just starved for good parkour but I thought it was good enough after the parkour update. Might even take that system over Unity's.
@@inferno33222 genuine question why do you think that mirage had good parkour?
can you give some examples? anything apart from the city design.
@MagnumSpydyrIN its clunky but other than that it still has good parkour
@@inferno33222 I think it was the best return to roots we could get with the resources the devs had. They really did a great job all things considered but it was.. idk man it wasn't bad it's my favorite of the newer games but it still most of the same feel as the RPGs. You don't have as much freedom with the parkour as you used to
Finally Assassin's Creed is back to the roots... of another tree
Realest comment on this video
Punished Venom Jcers. I simultaneously have set the bar low enough that shadows taking stealth seriously is enough for me at this point, yet totally respect this mission. Fuck em lol
Butter being the radical centrist as always
It's actually crazy how they will straight-up just lie. Now, whether it's on purpose or not _doesn't really matter_ but there is _no one_ who cares about Assassin's Creed _even a little bit_ who wouldn't just immediately burst out laughing at some of the stuff written in those articles. Like... Come on, Ubisoft... 😅😅
Im concived you guys don't know what parkour is
@@Vynnnegs Nice try, but I did parkour in real life for six years. And I've played every Assassin's Creed that's released since 2007, which I guess is somewhat important, too.
Yea it’s just tiresome. I don’t think I’ll ever make another video like this even if they do it again next time. This is my “tap the sign” video.
@@Vynnnegshave a look at their channels before you speak, you’re making yourself look really dumb rn.
@LeoKRogue If that's true, then you would know ubisoft wasn't lying when they said it was a return to the roots of stealth and parkour, which is in the game?
You're a G for being so Steadfast in your message 💪
“There is no greater glory than this: to die in service to God, fighting for what we believe in!”
This is such a great persepctive and I'm so happy you decided to explore it and share it with us.
Thank you, Jcers.
You’re welcome and thank you for letting me use your footage; you definitely carried a lot of the video part of this video essay lol
Finally someone has spoken up about this. I'm tired of all the meat riders that Ubisoft is paying to use fancy words for a game that doesn't even know what it stands for.
All these die hard fans and yet even they fail to state the obvious. You my friend are a real one, you understand that this is more than just a game.
It isn't only the parkour that is declining, but the whole fucking series. There is no compelling story telling, no memorable soundtrack, no memorable city or location, no passion,
no ASSASSINS. The cutscenes suck, the acting sucks, the fucking anvil engine sucks. Everything sucks because art is lost. You would expect them to try at least but they literally reuse assets
and sound effects which makes every game look and feel the same. Bland.
What once was a series of self exploration and self expression is now gone because the guys that made the series what it is are not there anymore.
Can they at least remake the older games so we can shut the fuck up and move on with our lives? I know for a fact there will be no ACTUAL return to the roots game from now on.
Thank you for making this video I hope more 'fans' wake up after seeing this.
P.S Big thanks to the woke agenda and all the DEI shit
I am glad you’re talking about shadows because it lets more people know to not buy this slop
I still remember Valhalla also being marketed as somewhat a "return to form". The marketing will say anything in order to not instantly piss off the old fanbase, only to disappoint them at release anyway.
I genuinely believe that Ubisoft simply doesn't understand what made and still makes the old movement gameplay so satisfying for many people. Mirage was also advertised as an homage to old AC, and that one didn't even have good ejects at launch... Their love letter literally didn't understand the love itself, we had to tell them after release (which, to their credit, they at least listened to).
Maybe Hexe will change things up again but I genuinely don't believe Ubi will ever go back or even try to understand. The new formula is simply too profitable and by removing all depth they shield themselves from the complaints of people who don't want to learn a system actually worth learning.
I remember letting go an audible chuckle when seeing that article for the first time with substantial confusion shortly following.
Absolutely bewildering
Yea it’s wild man
I've given up on Ubi finding the roots of AC, it seems the only roots they know is being a shitty company and workplace
I have also given up. I’ll still do what I can because it’d be nice to see a return, but I know the truth. I will not let them get away with tarnishing my beloved classic Creed’s reputation, though. No thank you
Always good to see that people call out disingenuous marketing for what it is.
Also, the joke about flips coming true proves that Jcers has access to the God Head and from it, produces the Spirit and Idea which influences the materiality of videogames. Joke about parkour and social stealth getting better next time
Scheler’s Geist was moved to produce the ontology through the sheer power of my raw irony
Arno twirled so that Naoe could flip
never forget that they abandoned the OG puppeteering system for this nonsense
But dude... you're just mad that shadows doesnt have pretty pretty side eject and catch ledge. Stay coping while I skip all of the nonexistent movement and world design with the grappling hook/horse riding. You clearly just want classic AC back again which is never happening but if a game like Mirage releases I am going to throw a fit because it actually tries somewhat to be like it. You just don't understand that I need constant twirls in every advert and gameplay footage. I love the awful targeting of the side drops and the back ejects on top of the useless twirl to hang/drop which won't work if it thinks you'll take fall damage. But that's okay since there's a "skill" you unlock that negates all fall damage!!! Thank you Ubisoft this is such an amazing addition. Now keep coping as I buy the premium starter pack (30 dollars) for just 2 weapons instead of the entire Ezio Trilogy on sale. AC1 to Revelations are so boring and stale I can't believe I actually have to press buttons and manually do all navigation??? No horses in cities??? What is this garbage just let me skip past it and ride to the nearest objective!!! Boring boring and boring!!! Jcers I beg you to stop with the AC PURIST nostalgia glasses behavior!!! IT'S not healthy and I have seen you rapidly deteriorate mentally. Just one twirl will help you recover it is all it takes. But you won't, your primitive catch ledge brain can't comprehend this and you'll never do twirls again. I have no hope for your recovery. I will be playing the latest coolest most fastest agile assassin ever (Naoe) while you weep about classic AC's identity being destroyed.
Unity is the best game in the series. I dont know how you are so blind to see the truth. every other game is a flawed buggy mess that should be looked down upon and ignored. Unity is literally the peak of AC. The absolute pinnacle of functionality and fidelity. You are so ignorant and have so many shades of nostalgia glasses that you have to blabber such nonsense 24/7. I don't want to hear "Ezio can perfect grab this. Ezio can side eject that." How about you twirl on to some bitches. Then we can talk. You don't even get the twirls you just stare at the wall contemplating about side ejecting and perfect grabs. You just cant handle the complexity of the breakfall and everything in Unity. You can do so many things with the beams. You can swing and stand on them its so amazing. Absolute peak of a game. The world design is also insane it literally makes me cry dude. You just cant handle good games. Come back to me when you have 5000 hours on Unity you absolute newgen. You're just another Ezio fanboy who wants to lick his feet. I am blocking you after I send this message out of utter disgust for your life and envy. I made a poll on my youtube channel full of Unity fanboys and all said it was the most functional game in the series. Clearly the majority are against you and the facts write themselves. Just give up bro you clearly aren't going to do anything against these statements and factual info. Your video footage is also too long for me to watch even though its 10 seconds long and likely forged or not actually a bug. Checkmake liberkiosk I've got all the cards. Now go back and side eject into your cave you nostalgia glasses loser!!! God I hate all of you absolute nerds you just keep sending me AC2 choreography why why why????? What is the point of this nonsense the game is so bad I literally jumped by accident off a building one time so its awful. Ezio did what I wanted when I pressed a button so its bad and needs to be safeguarded and baptized with TWIRLS TWIRLS TWIRLS!
Pretty Twirls > Ejects, manual jumps, and graqb ledge
Wow. You actually did it. You fit all of the negative comments & common braindead into one shitpost. I am impressed. This is art
i think you forgot to mention "this comment is paid by ubisoft" 🤣
Finally someone actually speaking up about the actual issues of the game itself instead of nonsense, great video
A lot of the stupid “controversy” about this game has made people very allergic to any kind of negativity whatsoever that’s associated with this game which is breeding a somewhat toxic yesman attitude in the AC spaces online. Not very neato
thank you for this video, I thought I was going insane, the way Naoe moves gives me a headache, the way she "sticks" to the ground at every movement is jarring, the animation blending is even more awful than I thought when you showed the old games' footage.
Yea AC has really struggled with that sort of thing since Unity. Crazy how after a decade it still hasn’t been fixed
We have taken your social stealth, parkour, world design for said parkour, and replaced it with pretty twirls!!!!

Arno twirled so that Naoe could flip. True creative iteration and gameplay innovation
There's an understanding issue that has to be cleared up for this situation to make sense. When Ubisoft is saying they're listening and going back to the roots, they do not mean the AC1-Rev system. That is not the system that's been getting glazed nonstop for the past five years. That's not the system that has clips amassing millions of views. That system is Unity parkour, not the AC1 parkour.
And what was that system if not a regression in every conceivable metric? A clunky, imprecise, snap-to-point parkour that was sorely lacking in what made Ac1 movement so good.
What message did that give to Ubisoft?
If Arno cant freely side eject, if he second guesses and vetos all your inputs on a whim, if he floats from ledge to ledge, if all that is alright because he do muh pretty twirl, then who gives a shit about the mechanical complexity lost to achieve the animation fidelity?
To add to this, one major thing that has been relentlessly drilled into our heads for nearly a decade now: "Parkour Down is the best addition to the series". Count the praise parkour down has gotten and compare it to the complaints about ledge grab getting cancelled.
The message is clear. Shadows delivers. Arnita can parkour down while doing pretty twirl, one after another. They listened to the fanbase and they heard the loudest voices.
Those long-time fans you mentioned who fell for AC Shadows parkour?
I'm willing to bet their favourite classic game was Unity.
What's even funnier, the first video that's recommended to me as i'm watching yours is an AC Unity "Parkour Stealth Kills".
We ac fans got exactly what we deserve for being part of this community.
You don't even need a contextual geometry placement or random chance to yield the twirls anymore, the chick does them every time you use parkour down.
Can't wait for the parkour evolution videos. Finally, Arno will have a worthy challenger.
Enjoy.
Your analysis is holistic and your logic undeniable. Shadows’ parkour system really is the system that I strawman Unity’s to be when I’m trolling & dunking on it.
cant even wallrun right in unity let alone breath.
I almost forgot how unbelievably amazing the AC Revelations theme is.
I think post-update mirage, was an actual return to roots by like 90 percent and I really really enjoyed it, I wouldn't be dissapointed if games that follow mirage's example came out, it can be the base for new actual assassins creed games, while trying to implement things from its past, such as ezio trilogy's parkour for example.
I think mirage was a perfect balance between the polish of the newer titles and the feel of the older ones, I started with AC 2 when I was a kid and even as a long term fan of the series I don't really think a true recreation of the older games would work in modern gaming without changing with the industry and not being afraid to embrace more modern elements into its identity.
Same engine for 10 years. within 7 years we had 3 engine changes from AC1-Unity.
There is a clear difference in the level of ambition found in classic AC’s vision and the one they now have
is the parkour even an engine issue?
in its multiplayer AC4 had literally the classic parkpur/puppeteering system/Ezio mechanics in its Multiplayer, despite its base game having completely a new one. which blew my mind. This proves that they CAN implement that OG system but they just don't.
I just miss the beautiful smooth animation and feel of ac 1-syndicate. All the new rpg games feel so clunky to play whether your fighting or parkouring. Oh and mo capped cutscenes
@@btchiaintkidding7837it is, ever since origin the parkour basically just dedge like this

Been “returning to the roots” since 2017, and it’s always been the same crap, even worse as the years went by.
Assassin’s Creed is way beyond parkour and stealth, Ubisoft seems to forget how deeply philosophical these games were.
I am playing through AC4 again and the difference in writing to that which we have now is insane.
Shadows will be the same watered down crap with a new lick of paint. Also, Quebec is developing the game💀
This was a great video man, always loved your work.
"deeply philosophical"
it pains me how much i miss hearing the targets make me questioning of my actions like AC 1 did ... so much potential for this franchise GONE.
were fighting a losing battle with the defense of true AC, both in public perception of what it is and in trying to convince ubisoft what it should be.
i was mildly hopeful that mirage had the right spirit and was simply limited by its origin as a valhalla DLC, but the marketing for shadows kinda convinces me that they either dont know what the games really used to be like or are actually lying about wanting it back in any capacity.
Oh, true AC is never coming back, this I have known for years now. However, there has been a vast increase in the number of players in the community giving intelligent commentary and becoming knowledgeable about the franchise over the last 4-5 years, in large part due to the choreographed gameplay community. Many more people than otherwise would have came to love and appreciate these classic games, and regardless of how the new releases go, I can be happy with that
You made realize how new games make us forget what the games actually were about. People critique stealth in the early games, but the main stealth mechanics were rooted in social stealth, not hide in bush stealth.
8:15 speaking of awful world design, the player here is trying to side drop on the NSO but cannot due to the devs placing jars and other stuff which makes the player unable to get on there at all
Hey, the player tried his best.
It's actually kind of hilarious that a game franchise which began on the protagonists' faction represented total freedom (along with its consequences) and the antagonists forced control of the world (allegedly for safety and peace) has transitioned from being able to move pretty much anywhere in the way you want (enjoy your fall damage though) to being so dumbed down and safe that you don't even have a jump/eject button.
It just gets more and more railroad-y
If you watch that full video, u would realize that Naoe would still Refuse to drop on top of that platform even if there were no jars... she would defy physics and Grab-ledge-hang instead of landing on feet at similar platforms even if it looks choppy or unnatural
i dont get it, how hard is it to fix this sh^t with some code or something wtf. this is an actual mainline game of a flagship ip of a massive gaming juggernaut, not an indie or free early access why tf are they unwilling and incapable to do even that?
this is so comically sht
@@btchiaintkidding7837 agreed, side ejects are awful in shadows but still, if you look closely the player tries to get on It from the hang state but can't due to bad design which is pathetic
Die hard fan of AC here since the first one. Although Ubi shouldn't market this as a return to roots, especially in terms of parkour and stealth, I am at least a little bit glad that they are bringing back the old Assassins v/s Templars plotline, and none of the 'hidden ones' or the 'order of ancients'. I am also glad that they have genuinely tried to implement new gameplay systems ( at least for AC ) like the dynamic weather which affects gameplay loop, or the light meter for stealth; something we've not seen them do since origins.... And with all the constructed hate that has been going around for this game on social media, I am still going to give this one a fair chance to prove itself. But as far as Parkour and Stealth claims 'returning to roots', I agree with you, they shouldn't advertise this game as such
I am happy to see that someone who started with the RPG games knows how special the games back then were
JARVIS, launch Revelations and bolt me to the chair for 6 hours, also, reply with borderline bannable imagery under every parkour clip AFTER Black Flag.

Wow, hit a nail on the head with this one. Exactly how I feel and you put it incredibly well into words!
Haven’t got more than a minute into the video but im so glad you specified 1- ac3, 3 deserves so much more love from the classic fans
Could not agree more. 3 isn’t a “classic Creed” game in the truest sense of the word but it is very much the last game in the series which I think is demonstrably made whole-heartedly in the original spirit of AC’s identity as an IP.
Parkour, Social Stealth AND Modern Day
Very true. That being part of the “back to the roots” wasn’t part of the claim but yea, that and having a genuinely philosophical exploration of ethics and anthropology (as seen in AC1-3) would need to return in order for AC to truly return to its roots
@@jcers There's a small chance this game does for the last one, because "Assassins v. Templars" is back.
@@Omar-Asimgiven how well Quebec’s last AC outing handled the series’s’ philosophy, I’m not hopeful

I agree with your assessment, but I disagree that most people are content with parkour we've seen in Shadows 'including long standing fans of the series'. Online, I see most people fans or not, make fun of the constant flips tbh. Most people are excited about the setting, but apart from that, and maybe the stealth every part of the game is either considered mediocre or ridiculed.

You’re a legend. Thank you for the great video can’t wait to consume your content. You literally know your shit and I’m so excited.
Assassin's Creed as a franchise turns 20 in 2027, a part of me still want to hope they'd change their course but realistically whatever game released on that year will be another rehash of RPG Creed, which will be really sad considering the system will be 10 years old by that time.
2027 will be AC1 20th Anniversary RPG-style remake
At this point I can't honestly say to be seriously bothered by the brand's public perception anymore, certainly not for myself at least, however, it's much more of an easy thing for me to tell you that it doesn't take me long to get a pretty good understanding for why you are, as well as an urge to express genuine appreciation for your way of presenting your thoughts. Mihi compluribus causibus hanc pelliculam placere possim dicere

at this point can you even consider yourself a fan of the franchise if you so deeply dispise the franchise? i with you a little bit on the marketing and parkour but i do not agree with these things you said at the start of the video, i think things change, and its a matter of taste if you like it or not, i do not align myself with the purists, good video mate, you should do more of these
This. If the RPG route was the right way to go is always debatable, but for some reason AC purist always forget the reception Unity and Syndicate got. I remember everyone, AC fans or not, HATING THEM and wanting the series to change and stop releasing the same title over and over again. So they did that.
I think a lot of the confusion in fans stem from AC unity's parkour. Whenever people talk of parkour you hear someone say "go play unity dude that's the best parkour version" while it's been the exact prelude to why parkour got so much worse with contextuality over expression. Ropotopolus did try to address this false narrative but more should be said to remove misconceptions on what the old parkour wanted to be.
I enjoyed Mirage's return to the roots. And although Shadow's return to the roots isn't as good as Black Flag remake's return to the roots, I think Hexe should be a fairly decent return to roots especially in comparison to AC1 remake's return to roots. Great video with a message I agree with but Ezio jumping all over the place and not doing what you tell him to at the start distracted me so I started rambling as well
Never change, Sif

@jcers Aw, Thank you ❤️. Welp, its 3am for me so its better i go to sleep. Byee ✌️
I couldn't agree more! The golden age from AC1 to AC4 was truly the peak of the series. The gameplay was robust and deep, without unnecessary stats gating, and it stayed true to the franchise's core pillars. The narratives were compelling, and the lore remained intact and cohesive.
There are definitely some hiccups in those games but largely I agree with basically everything you said. AC1-3 and kinda 4 is where it’s at (and Unity can get a participation award). Anything else? Meh
@@jcers. I think AC4 successfully fused both the assassin and pirate fantasies and should have been the blueprint for subsequent games that wanted to deviate from the assassin fantasy. I agree that AC4 is certainly an outlier compared to the Desmond saga, but it's an awesome game to cap off the series, lay it to rest, and move on-serving as an epilogue to the Desmond anthology.
7:08 brain-dead fans, there no nice way of putting it. These people see cool animations and consider it good gameplay. That was my exact issue with the Spiderman reboot game

Thank you. There's a reason I get so annoyed and pissed off at the many glazers of the new AC entries, particularly the RPG ones. I remember a video by Luke Stephens saying that true Assassin's Creed fans should accept change because of his misuse of the ship of Theseus analogy. I'm tired, man. I miss what AC used to be. And, yes, I highly agree with the list of games you showcased as the ones that managed to maintain the core identity of the franchise. Everything else can honestly burn.
Ship of Theseus is designed for situations where the ship still looks the same but has technically new pieces, which certainly not the case with AC lol

私からすれば、スタッフからアサシンクリードに対する情熱が失われた現実を目にして、ただひたすら残念でなりません。

Oh, are you telling me that sprinting is now faster than climbing? I'm shocked.
No, my point is that sprinting is _so much faster_ than climbing or jumping and the city layouts are so easily navigable with no downsides to just running in the streets that the player is actively disadvantaging themselves when it comes to traversal every time they choose to do parkour unless they have a specific reason to be on a rooftop (usually for a viewpoint or, as I said in the video, as an ancillary to stealth through letting you access verticality).
Don't take it the wrong way but from my perspective there is not much difference between haters dunking on the game for any reasons and "classic fans" that refuse to let go the nostalgia past the first few games in a series of more than 10 games, while thinking they know more what should be an AC game about than game devs themselves
I was a bit like that at some point regarding Final Fantasy when they left behind the classic rpg games for more dynamic and realtime approach. I just stop playing and don't really care about it but my younger brothers love the new game mechanics, a lot of people do.
As for what are the roots of AC games, well, that is pretty clear that for Ubisoft it stops at historical game featuring assassination and parkour, and is not really more than that. And regression you complain about are compensated by new feature that you don't care about. It is fine but maybe you should stop caring.
This is a reasonable take, a rarity nowadays!
By calling this "nostalgia" you are implying this whole video is an emotional (thereby incredibly subjective and ignorantly biased) take, thereby illogical and invalid. which it simply is not. this is not some take that is devoid of logic.
this is not some nostalgia bs. Even some of the A tier AC youtuber or parkour enthusiasts are post 2020 fan who discovered the older games recently.
AC parkour system was great in the older Altair/Ezio games, and it has been a downgrade ever since. It is not about letting go or whatever tf. Asking to give players more control or allowing them for more skill expression (or at least as much as the Original games did) is an absolutely valid take.
And this so called "AC devs" you speak of... the lead Director or visionary of the AC franchise was fired during development of Brotherhood anyways cuz he refused to milk the franchise or at least refused make pirate/viking/spartan/ninja game amd call it AC . And that's pretty much it.
the difference between these shadow devs and classic AC or mirage decs are the difference between patriotic soldiers and mercenaries for hire
Is it an unreasonable expectation that I should be able to follow the Assassin’s Creed when I’m playing as an Assassin in an Assassin’s Creed game

@@jcers I feel you man, truly, and I hope Ubisoft will one day give you what you waiting for. Just read your pinned comment too, again, I was just giving you my hot take :p. Nice video by the way
Oh my god, Thank you J
You are most welcome sir
I love this video. I always replay the first games of the series with one thing in mind: while I will play Ac1 until the Desmond ending, I will be playing an entire journey that has in some way consistency in writing, game mechanics and atmosphere of the game. Even if I can appreciate playing the new games of series, when I return to the first games, it's always magical and in comparison the newer games feels like an inferior iteration of a game that the Developers or at least the Higher-ups don't have the intention to understand anymore in its core bases.
Yes. This. Thank you.
You are most welcome
You didn't even mention that you can't lache at all or parkour on NSOs as Yasuke
I did mention about laches at 8:19 but you’re right that I didn’t really talk about Yasuke
The only issue I take is with the absolute language about parkour improvements since you now have the option to dodge off and auto catch Unity-style, dive over and freefall AC3-style, or manually hang RPG-style. This descent depth of course comes at the cost of traditional wall movement being the worst in the series, and it's clear the inspiration was Unity, the one with the cult of radical fans, since one of its main public praise points was its automated descent mechanic. There's also some sideways wall movement tricks with the grapple hook that nobody tested, but until we get our hands on it again it's hard to say how useful they'll be
Personally I like what I saw from shadows overall, I am more into Ac lore than Ac gameplay so on that aspect call me a casual, i do know the combat faced drastic improvement, the stealth looks interesting
what pisses me off is the lack of social stealth that even valhalla dlc could provide to some extent, the lack of evolution of the parkour, fall damage being removed once again
,The declining quality of the voice acting and the superheroification of assassins, Assassins are a cult in its very inception, they do their best to do good but their methods are far from being pure, there is a grayness that was present in Ac1 and black flag to me that elevated the conflict,
i don’t think assassins are villains but it’s meant to be a philosophical question an argument but we never explored that to its fullest,
also the protagonist lack of a genuine personality, Bayek/Edward/ Ezio even Connor and Altair had various flaws in their personalities,
i saw part of the prologue of shadows it’s interesting I’ll play in Japanese dub(top tier voice acting from them) but yeah when they say return to the roots the problem with that lie is not just the lack of evolution of parkour and stealth but the complete refusal to bring in competent writers outside of maybe mcdevit and proper voice actors for a story that truly tackles what the series is about, also my most requested complaint is the sanitization of violence in Ac , we forget old history was brutal, i don’t want edge lord stuff but even the fantasy history of rdr2 managed to be unapologetic but also well written with the violence in times past,
i personally believe Ubisoft will not change but their complete destruction is far from a solution, i love Ac even now, I think wat it needs is one team, a plan, listen to fan feedback and time lots of time for a reboot but for that to happen leader ship must change
I guess Ubisoft just beyond saving. No one can change Ubisoft, not even themselves. Being honest in the marketing is not engaging enough they have to go extra miles and make it worse, believe us we're sad.
It's always GOD DAMN Quebic! I swear I wouldn't trust them with anything. 😂❤
Why they say “return to root” when the game is complety diferent from the original one
Tbh the only game blending in makes sense in is the first game. You could actually believe altair blends in with scholars in his outfit.
every game after that doesnt really make sense why someone dressed like an assassin can blend in with anyone else.
Oh yeah, I think I know which roots they are referring to: Last two mainline games had you controling a brute whose strong side was combat so now that they encourage a little more stealth in Mirage and Shadows its straight up a return to the roots. So we must definitely be happy now. Two AC stealth games? In a row?? What???
Jcers, my beloved (real) AC connoisseur, thank you for this video
Too many has the mindset of "don't care, still buying". Ubisoft has been pulling this shit for years, and at this point I think it's just expected that Assassin's Creed will never be what it once was
Me who likes the change in combat: I see this as an absolute win.
Sucks for people who really like their AC from the old days, but I do like some of the changes we got in the RPG series that's why I'm not as mad as the other players.
7:36 Bro is spitting the factests facts at the speed of light. Big W 🔥
This genuinely pisses me off now. I fell for the "back to the roots" rhetoric during the release of Mirage and I feel like an idiot for it. I will never pre-order an Assassin's Creed game again. The new plan is to wait for a sale, or never get it at all
First Assassin's Creed I will not be buying, I'm finally done.
Great video, with creators like you out here making noise there’s simply no excuse for Ubisoft to be getting things wrong still. There is so much readily available help from fans on the internet they need to stop trying to rope those fans back in with articles and instead actually listen to commentary like this which people freely make out of love, passion and genuine care for the series
Ubisoft been gaslighting its audience into thinking that their games are good for years now.
One look at the "city" in shadows and it is clear that parkour was not the focus or even considered. Feels very flat and basic.
Thou hast verily spake
It’s not the main city in the game, that’s like saying the parkour in black flag was flat because you spent 5% of the story in Havana
@The_real_tomold wonna bet main city will look almost exactly the same as the one in the demo?
@@nenadmilovanovic5271 there’s crazy concept art look it up it’s beautiful and looks like Baghdad
No beams, no bars, no parkour starters, no verticality, no parkour hallways, rarely any haystacks, barely any buildings at times to parkour on, no ropes connecting buildings at least, and wide roads which separate buildings.
As someone who is very excited to play Shadows, I like this video. I am someone who can separate what game is a good game and what is a good AC game, Shadows is my ninja game. I wish ubisoft would just give these a different name, an ac tale or something. If by some miracle the developers actually listen and give the bare minimum (ejects) I'll be surprised.
I appreciate your comment! Yea, I don’t think shadows will be a bad game. I just want Ubi to stop implicitly (or now explicitly) marketing it like it lives up to what classic fans want from AC when it clearly doesn’t
@jcers I haven't trusted what companies say about their games since Fable and Fable 2 but yeah, it's insulting
I still think that Mirage tried and got much closer to the roots than other games and is probably the best AC game in 15 years. Which is really sad.
Hey bro amazing video but I think the music is a bit too loud for your audio just for future reference. Hope to see your channel grow more
As someone who played all the main titles and someone who has pretty high standards and loves good parkour and lore and everything, especially ac 1, i still have some hope for shadows a bit more than usual, I'd rather see what it turns out to be, the parkour is decent if used purposefully around with decent button control and stuff like that. Shadows was never gonna return to the roots, but it's just going back to be more like an actual ac, we getting assassins and templars, probably the perspective of an outsider and naoe who will naturally learn about the assassins, the templars might be behind nobunaga pulling the strings, there's a leak showing a templar but still. Main point is, let's see what shadows ends up being. I managed to enjoy even a terrible game like valhalla with a plastic map and bad gameplay and everything else but the writing, so i can definetly a game with good graphics and a more focused assassin story with certain twists to it and some parkour that's at least directed more narrowly in the map hand in hand with stealth. Let's just wait. I see all the issues in the rpg parkour, but shadows has certain things that makes me more inclined to it. I'll cover the game in a video when the game comes out
Ubisoft can't be allowed to rewrite history to justify their downgrades, watering down, greed, and ignorance. Great vid.
11:06 It really is a question whether more executives are either ignorant or scummy at Ubi when it comes to things like this.
Given the stuff we’ve seen come out in the past few years about the company, you’re definitely right that we ought to be suspicious. Still, I give the benefit of the doubt in specific cases. Rash judgment is wrong and causes a lot of problems in this world.
lmao this is so scathing and spicy! Thanks for letting me know that they still haven't come close to ac1 yet.
i was busy being 8 years old when AC3 launched. was the reaction to the parkour on that game being reduced to a single button as big as with origins/odyssey/valhalla?
As someone who 100% most AC games, bar the RPG ones, the series hasn't felt like ''AC'' since Revelations to me.
They just can't give up RPG combat
Like, the game looks fine for what it is. I think if Ubisoft was honest about it there wouldnt be so much skepticism.
Long story short, a big corporation lied… shocker
3:17 spot on, that's why I believe it was wasted potential that the mechanic was never explored properly. We got a few cool animations and some decent mechanics for it but it desperately needed to be fleshed out above simply blending into a crowd.
There should've been mechanics like being able to loot guard outfits from guards and enter restricted areas while being detected.
Proper notoriety system like bloodstained outfits will instantly scare civilians and being wanted will mean the civilians can find local guards and tip them off, changing outfits removes notoriety etc. The social stealth system could've been so fucking cool, but instead it was such a good mechanic that was unique the og series that was never expanded upon into the depth it deserved.
I would love to work with people on actually making these games into their full potential through possibly heavily modifying the original engine. Not even sure if that's possible though.
It does feel like that black flag should have been the... Flag ship (yes pun intended) to an AC spin off. Call it the Animus project, hub, or something.
So they could be as creative with the stories and character classes as they want. Basically similar to Shin megami tensei and Persona.
Both still co-existing with each other.
bro ! my cat jumped on ezio on the monitor wtf 😭
At this point I'm surprised if people still believe:
- Ubisoft is ever genuine about anything they say publicly.
- The same devs that made the older games great are still the majority of devs working on the newer games.
- Any of the design principles that made the older games great are still the ideals driving the newer games.
For sure. Still, this being the case doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be called out when they come out and claim stuff like this
At this point our only hope to get that 'back to the roots' AC design is from Ubisoft Bordeaux. Hopefully with the time & resources they've been given they can deliver on that empty promise from the other studios
To think that even Watch Dogs 2, a game from 2015, looks better and has more consistent animation blending than a game 10 years it's junior...from the same company...from a series known for its parkour and vaulting animations. 😢
The last AC game that felt worthy of the title to me was Origins, at least story wise, Bayek as a protagonist, and how it treated the creed with the respect it deserves. But even that was pretty different from the old games, it just did that in a more tasteful way imo.
Gonna have to hard disagree with this one, chief, haha. Appreciate you checking out the video, though
Nice video it was respectful and not full of hate like and other and explains well one of the biggest problems
that makes me feel the words to much man especially the music..hits hard 13:39
Ubisoft seriously should've thought more of how can they improve the roots of Assassin's Creed even more. Make stealth more challenging by making the AI much, MUCH smarter and more aware. Aside from that, the suspicion meter from AC1 should be implemented back here. If you're seen, someone may tell the guards to get your sorry ass. But that will be more complicated since Yasuke is VERY conspicuous in the open area. As for Naoe, if only there is a disguise mechanic where she can change between her shinobi outfit and a normal outfit (like in AC liberation, though I haven't fully played that game yet)
As for parkour, my guess is that Ubi didn't think about its full capabilities like we see in youtube videos where Altair and Ezio goes crazy around the planks, roofs, rails, those kinds of shit. It felt like we ACTUALLY control the character rather than the character still has a designated spot to grasp, land, or stick their feet onto.
Sure, AC Shadows has features like changing seasons and destructible environment (and would you look at that hair physics), but if only they continue to improve what are the important ones from the past games and not just from the RPG AC games.
I'm sorry Jcers, Those flips just work on me , I just have been starved by Valhallas abysmal parkour system that some faster animations and flips have satisfied me , I still don't think this game is gonna be some grand experience , but it might be a just fine one
When the bar is in hell, six feet under doesn’t seem so low
@@jcers Bar? What bar? They removed that entirely from Shadows remember?!
I really miss the detail in early AC (mainly AC1) of social stealth through your actions and not just whether or not a large enough number of people were next to you. Feels like the avenue the series should have stepped hard into innovating within instead of... everything else.
Going far enough into AC really does always lead back to AC1 supremacy
I never expect shadow to be back to roots tho.
Nobody did, which is what makes it even more odd that Ubi would try to claim this
Nice video, i still want to play shadows, i pre ordered it^^
