This month, I'd like to demonstrate how I play the intro to "An Infinite Regression," the opening track from the latest Animals as Leaders album, Weightless. This part features a very unusual and unique "double-thumbing" technique that, I believe, was pioneered by the great jazz bassist Victor Wooten. As usual, all of the licks in this column are arranged for seven-string guitar (low to high, B E A D G B E), though I play the part on an eight-string.
For this intro, I use my pick-hand thumb to sound consecutive notes with a downstroke followed by an upstroke, after which I use the index and middle fingers for fingerpicking. Along with the fret-hand tapping that initiates each phrase, the combination of these different techniques lets you devise cool, rhythmically complex and deceptive-sounding riffs like this one.
"you lose a little bit of low end but, you know... -you should get a seven string-, anyway..."
Fucking guy is hilarious.
ye xD
HAHAHAHAHA im dead
I died when he said that. As I'm waiting for me Kiesel A7 to arrive...
Fuckin Tosin is like "get on my level already" hahahaha
Sergio Andrés the thought of not having a seven string is inconceivable to him
I see scars on his hand, presumably where he had the cybernetic implants installed.
Lol
+JLConawayII come on dude, hahahaha
+JLConawayII No way... Petrucci implants !!! jajjajajj
aaaah, that explains that dislocated little finger reaching way the heck out there...
JLConawayII That’s no shit! This dude is not human
In my honest opinion, Tosin is hands down the greatest technician on electric guitar today. Every bit as revolutionary as Les Paul, Yngwie, Satriani, Vai and Gilbert were in their days.
Tosin is the only guy left INNOVATING, imo.
Lol ok. Plz explain. U can't just generalize and.not give details..how exactly is tosin every bit as revolutionary as fucking les Paul? Or any of those other guys u mentioned. Because he does slap guitar and plays 8 string guitars???
He plays jazz chords in metal with odd times? That's ALL been done before. So what exactly makes him in the same league as those guys innovation wise?
And btw I love Tosin he IS amazing but ur statement is silly
@@grapejuice2589 Well, for starters, Les Pauls are absolute TRASH guitars that won't even stay in tune, don't come in multiscale, and sound like shit.
@@andrewarnold9642 Hey, idiot; He meant Les Paul, the actual guitarist, which if you knew anything about guitar you'd probably know what a beast he was in his time. You've just proven to everyone here that your intellect perfectly matches the outlandish and nonsensical statement you made earlier about Tosin being the only guitarist left innovating. Just gtfo before you embarass yourself any further.
@@grapejuice2589 Why the fuck does someone have to justify their OPINION to you? Who is you?
This is one of those things that's all skill. In theory, it's not complicated to understand what he's playing or the techniques he's using...but in practice, omfg, this requires so much skill and practice and timing, wow
it's really not that hard to play when you learn the technique, at all.
The words make sense. The information is soaked in. My eyes aren't understanding what's going on.
I understand everything that's going on. I just can't bend my thumb like that!
tokyobassist learn music theory
it's all in the fingers. he's doing a banjo roll on one string. you just can't see it as he's so efficient with his playing.
@@alexkazhdan my aunt can. But she dosen't play guitar. 😂
SAAAAAAAME
he's so djent that even his voice is gated
Shut the fuck up.
+The Bucket Lovers haha good one
Heyden - Stop stealing comments from the Djent Set
Never heard of that
upvote this if i could tho. their video dialogue has gotten so heavy gated lately
The one thing I love about this intro is how the second half sounds really glitchy with how fast he’s playing.
That’s why I was convinced this was some sort of delay… now I’m just… flabbergasted? Astounded? Befuddled? Nothing quite explains how impressed and confused I am
@@Kekistani_Insurgent it’s really insane how talented he is, i can’t imagine how much this dude practices
Im sure he never wanted to buy a delay pedal
He is a delay pedal
Haha well said
All I can here is SpongeBob and Patrick shouting "Technique!! Technique!!!"
Ikr XD Technique daaaaaaaaa!(heavy breathing) daaaaaaaaaaa!
Tosins got geanes! Lol
When in doubt, pinky out
Vic Cerniglia PINKY!!! PINKY!!!!!!!!
"DO THE PELVIC WOOOOOO!" ~ Patrick Starr.
Bruh I hear them screaming that in my head on EVERY Toshin guitar video 😂😂
He's a great instructor, wish I had him teaching me my whole life lol would have made things a lot simpler for me along the way
“In this lesson we’re gonna be breaking down your thumbs”
He forgot to mention you have to have an alien thumb
So instead of dislocating my thumb, I used a cake mixer 10/10 best guitar hack ever, try it!
who edited out all the "ums" it's really distracting
Parker Patterson the just used a noise gate on his voice
LMFAO .... 1:47
" You should get a 7 string " ..hahaa
That's literally what convinced me haha
bass + lead+ rhythm = 8 string
all you need is a drums lol .. two man band
CASTA Guitar Unless you play like Sungha Jung in which case, you don't need anybody lol

he should try out a bass guitar, someone should tosshim abass...i

Q: What's the range of a fretless Bass?
A: 25 Yards if you have a good arm.
Stop
Funniest thing ive ever read
I tried to learn to play this a year ago, but I just couldn't get anywhere with it. Now I'm back with nearly all of Victor Wooten and Les Claypool's techniques in my arsenal.
Scott Mishoe vids are great, vic Wooten's neighbor growing up
this makes me feel so stupid. i cant even guitar anymore
did you know theres is a tosin fan group on facebook of people who quit playing because of him, the more I see his videos the more I think I should join the crew.
What is this group called? I will join
This specific riff is actually not too hard to play, just start slow and work up the speed.
I tried learning double thumb on bass for years and never had it dialled, I cannot believe he can do it kn a guitar
I would like to say that this isn't that complicated, but I'd be lying. If you're willing to put in enough hours of repetitive practice, like any other song, it will be easy eventually.
Half the people watching this video probably tried to make their thumb look like that. Jeez, that's not human.
It's an alien :-)
so true his phalanx is at a perpendicular angle in the other direction, I wonder how he does that :o
I can do that actually ;P double jointed thumb I think. Not entirely sure, I just know I can do it cause in school i'll joke around and say I broke my thumb. I think it's called a hitch-hiker's thumb.
hahaha u got it : D
you are watching me! admit it!
I tried this and now I don't have a thumb.
Hehe you will get there cheers!!
Love it
Trying this on bass... SOOO DAMN hard but satisfying :) Thanks Tosin for sharing these awesome parts
I feel it's easier on bass than regular guitar. Bass strings are thicker and more widely spaced, so you don't have to be AS surgically accurate with the right hand.
How to Play the Thumb-Slapped Intro to "An Infinite Regression"
Step 1: Don't.
It's so simple!
Yeah he answered the question "How do *you* play it?" but now we must ask "but how do *I* play it?"
@@snap-off5383 Answer: Terribly, while using my tears of defeat as lubrication for my finger sliding.
@@TheMooseCaboose the salt from your tears will warp the wood, trust me I had to get a new neck after trying cliffs of dover
Cutting out his "ums" is so unnecessary and unnatural to listen to.
my respect for this song has just gone up
I love how he says "this next part is more difficult" as if it wasn't already there
yea my thumb is a no go on the whole hitchhiker bend!! Amazing though!! thanks for the lesson!!
Damn my man really had a glowup. From nerdy highscool kid to absolute sports car owning-dripping with style chad
I thought this was just a studio effect. Cool to see he actually does it
If you heard this and tried to learn it by ear only without ever seeing how he played it, you'd be trying to figure it out for the rest of your life. He's so good that he needs extra strings to accommodate his abilities.
Throughout the whole video, I was seriously anticipating what people would comment.
I am not disappointed.
Nice to see him using his consumer cost friendly TAM 10
That's not a TAM 10. It's his custom shop RG the TAM 10 is based off... meaning it's not so consumer friendly. Note the Rosewood neck and lack of middle pup
So it isn't. ...
Also, the video is from when before he signature model came out.
watch?v=CoVaeTVCQVQ . You obviously never knew Tosin Long enough.
I.knew him from his emg 808 days but that's about it
Once you get the hang of this it's actually really fun to experiment with. I messed around on my guitarists RG8 and managed to play some cool stuff.
When he said he will show how to play it on a six string he warmed everyone hearts with his kindness
I tried and I failed. Where is my fucking cookie?
That double jointed thumb picking is wild
once again. He is so djent he has a noise gate on his voice.. I would like to know people doing this. Do you do it with nails or just fingers? My fingers seem to stutter on the strings if you know what I mean I am not entirely sure what that word means because I am not native english speaker but I guess you can figure it out :D
i think i know what you mean, and i agree. lol
use your nail, like a really hard pluck!
Pretty sure he uses fingers
im a thumper myself so i know. it's mostly nail, a slight bit of finger
I'm a bassist that uses this technique, and i tend to use the side of my nail, and the bony joint of my thumb. You want a lot of flesh on the string and not just get the pick sound your nails provide so just try as much as you can to use that bone to kind of hit the string.
It’s just another example of Tosin looking outside the established boundaries of the guitar and finding inspiration from a musician who plays a different instrument to then apply that technique to his own. That’s the only way to evolve as a musician and go beyond the existing boundaries: draw inspiration from everywhere. Victor Wooten so respectfully mentioned and credited, all class Tosin!
holy shit what is up with his thumb
Lots of people's thumbs bend back like that, but I can see where you're coming from lol
He got mad at a stamp.
Hitchhiker's thumb. I can do that too.
Man shoutout to Victor Wooten, if anyone here isn't familiar with any of his work you should do yourself a favor and check him out, especially Octavision.
Ok now i'm going to play this song
you're so skilled it crushed my soul.
That is insane skill. Absolutely insane.
Please turn the Release up on the Voice Gate/Compressor, kinda hurts the ears. Thanks!
It barely looks like he's doing anything with his left hand, considering the amount of notes he actually produces. Damn you sir for making this look so easy.
I need to break my thumb to get that hitch hiker thing. it needs to be done so I can play like him
Hitch hiker's thumb is genetic. If you tried to do it by busting your thumb, it'd just fuse weirdly.
you don't need a hitch hikers thumb to play like this
Ron Jeremy Yes, we know how you play it, Ron. XD
Your welcome. It's good, that you actually don't want to quit. Guitar is, in my opinion, the most beautiful and the best instrument in the world. Good luck and lots of fun while mastering this instrument. =)
1:30 "Like that" yeah, sure man
I got a 7 string Washburn at my local pawn shop for only $65 bucks with gig bag. I never had a reason to play until now.
Lol "you should get a seven string"
This man is such a god, even his voice is gated.
Tosin has Afro power. This explains so much.
Strong hammer on close to the nut! Get it? LOL. The Abasinator go nuts. Great playing! Animals forever.
he ia good, but nick jonas' technique is much better i think
Check out Lil Wayne's guitar playing, that shit is unreal
I love the way he just casually says 'you should get a seven string', kind of out-of-the-blue :)
This guy is seriously so underrated!
WHY IS HE SO GOOD
"Unfortunately you lose a little bit of low end in this round tamber but yuhh know. you should get a 7 string
Anyways" ~ Tosin.
It was pioneered by Victor's guitarist brother, but employed on the bass by Victor and of course popularized from there.
Might want to check out his neighbor Scott Mishoe

"like that"
You guys cut out the 'ums' - lol
This guy's a monster. In the best possible way.
My thumb doesn't nearly bend back that far....
Thanks Victor Wooten
i want tosin to be my guitar teacher
"you should get a 7 string"....Love it!!!
that thumb is freaky!
it's a 90 degree angle. sheeesh.
I'm fucking crying.
This is too perfect.
Oh my god, do you think I'm really crying? I just a way to say that this music is great and it makes me want to play like this.
***** Full on sarcasm ^
the sound is WOW
Sounds so sick! That tone is awesome!!
His thumb goes like it's automated man..
Everyone talks about the slap technique of Tosin Abasi and Scott Mishoe already did it long time before, back in 1995.
After one week of training i managed to get the tuning right.
Every single guitar world video I see has that over the top noise gate jfc
I dislocated my thumb a while back so my bone permanently sticks out right where I do the slap part for slap bass, so it made it easier to play this
for anyone interested on technique have a look at the double thumb technique for bass guitar..
look for examples out there (victor wooten, marcus miller and so many people doing this stuff..)
also you can have a look to ben eller's couple of videos on that technique
I have played 8 string quite a bit, the strings are even closer together at the bridge than on a 7
A 6 string is wide in separation, at the bridge
By having a low string like a 70 gauge you can get all those percussive hammered notes.
I see why he says the "timbre" is different, 8 string is like having a bass register, and i see Tosin using the 8 to add low notes to chords, and play clean bass loop astinatos. And rhythm
Not really for shred
The way he can go between all these different sounds , is a lot like what they said about guitar on the first place , it's a "mini orchestra"
It can produce many tones, and now Tosin has added slap and double thumbed Bass to the game
Be for he showed this riff i swore the first 2 notes are picked
But they are not
The 1st 2 notes are in fact hammered with the fretting hand
Looking at this guy's thumb is painful.
a perfect example of why he is one of my favorite guitarists 2:38
I've never wanted to quit playing more . Like.... How. Well... Time to practice
Tosin is my Hero \m/
Young lad Tosin
Thanks, this riff is fun.
The man is an other-worldly guitarist, but... does he *_know_* that other people's thumbs don't bend backwards or come to a wedge-sharp point? Does he know that other people can't *_afford_* a 7 string? [Or an 8 string, for that matter...] ;| tavi.
There are many affordable 7 and 8 stringed guitars, what are you talking about. Not dirt cheap, sure, but for like $500-600 you can definitely find one.
It's called a hitch hikers thumb, i've gott em too. It's where your thumb can bend back so its like a 90° angle
'like that'. Thanks Tosin...
is mayonnaise an instrument?
yeah. misha mansoor played that thing
and Davie504
Thumbs up for the tutorial man
I'm not even a guitarist and this blows my mind
Only a person with that kind of thumb would able to to do that with ease...holy shit that thumb tho!! his thumb is almost like 45dgree angle bend...😦😂....i have straight thumb...so yeah im doom to fail on this technic if i were to even try to do it..😂😂
ben eller does it just fine. don't make excuses!
😂😂😂😂 lol lol
The guy just used Victor Wooten's double thump technique on a guitar. I cannot form sentences to express emotions anymore.
And where can I buy it?
Bass Day '98 ftw
Black Beethoven
The Victor Wooten of guitar.
"So to break this down is pretty simple" :-)
It sounds like hes starting a car and the engine is just popping constantly LOL. I love Animals As Leaders and Tosin is amazing ofc
Imagine what a KICK-ASS Bass player this lad would be!
such a nice guy
Every time I watch him play it gives me new ideas on how to play guitar lol
