A few years ago, I had told my daughter the story of Missouri Star and how it got started. I got a little emotional when I was telling her the story because I was so impressed by it. Then I told her all about the quilting retreats that they do and how much fun it seemed like it would be, and low and behold that Christmas my family gifted me with the money to do a retreat at Missouri Star. I was ready to jump in and go by myself, but I was talking to my sister in law one day, she is a quilter also, and told her what the kids had given me for Christmas, and she said she wanted to go with me! So we ended up doing the retreat together, and it turned out to be the same price if we shared a room at a bed-and-breakfast in the town, instead of staying at the retreat center. It was walking distance to everything, which was great. We had flown in because we live in Georgia. Hands-down the most fun I had had in a very long time! I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Oh my goodness! A great friend & myself just got back from a retreat at MSQC-we were there Aug. 23rd-26th!! She'd mentioned it to me one day that she was going by herself & when I told my husband, he said "well, why aren't you going with her??" I called her & of course she said "Yes!!" She rented a mini van as we did have to pick up another girl in another town. To say we had a BALL in an understatement 😃We rented a house owned by Jenny & Ron which was right down the street (next to State Farm) from everything.

In this episode, Chelsi mentioned people having an emotional connection to quilting. This really hit home for me. In her later years, my mom was an avid quilter. Although, I did make a few with her help, I was busy raising my daughters. After my mom passed away from breast cancer, I found totes of unfinished quilt tops. I knew the best way to honor her would be to finish her quilt tops and share them with family. From this I have developed my own passion for quilting. Every quilt I finish is in tribute to my mom.

Not a question but a compliment! I have learned so much from the Saturday inspiration blogpost! I have a new love of ways to simplify my life, delicious recipes that have become my favorites, as well as decorating ideas, organization methods, patterns, etc. Please tell your listeners that if they are not reading Sherri’s post they are missing out! Saturday morning has a whole new meaning for me…..it’s time for the weekly seven!

One of the best things I like about a quilt retreat is that I get to see all the different projects, patterns, fabrics that other quilters are working on. It’s really inspirational to experience all that creativity in one place. Not to mention no cooking or cleaning during the retreat!

I live in New York state. I've only been to one retreat which was in Missouri. I didn't know anyone but met the best people. I shared a room with two other ladies that were friends. Several of them and I stay in touch all year. sending pictures of what we are working on and talking every couple of months. I now have new quilt friends and we are meeting up to attend another treat in 2023. There are many benefits to attending a retreat.

A "Brain Dump" Journal - I love it! I have journals for crafting, health, What we had for dinner (helps me meal plan looking back), and kind of a spiritual/gratitude journal, but having one place to just quickly jot down anything and everything before it gets categorized is genius

I go to retreats for knitting, cross stitch, sewing, quilting and scrapbooking. I meet lots of people doing things that are interesting and diff than I'm working on, I learn new techniques, see what's happening in other areas of the country and no one is wanting my time for anything. No phone calls, no kids, nothing else except my projects. Most of the ones I attend have food in the work rooms or you can go out. The hassle is real but the rewards top the charts.

Hi Sherri and Chelsea. I started to really get involved with quilting over the past few years, due to you know what. It became my happy place. It still is my happy place. In Tasmania Australia, not many retreats here, so I haven't been to one. But I can imagine Iots of laughter and stories. One day I shall pack up some things and head to a place with some friends and have a blast creating! Thanks for your podcasts. So much fun!

Are those who go to quilt retreats usually experienced quilters? I always think about going but I’m a fairly new quilter, and I guess I’m afraid my skills may not be where they need to be. I went to a local retreat twice. First time enjoyed but found out during weekend I had gotten someone's space (people were very clicky) so next time I went the lady hosting assigned me a space in another room with ladies that did not want me in their room. Unfriendly. After that I do a personal "quilt retreat" either at home on when I go to beach, get snacks and watch AQL, FQS Lori Holt tutorials and quilt💙❤💖

To those of you hesitant in going to a retreat-1st off-you really don't pack up EVERYTHING 😊Yes, your machine, some notions, rotary cutter & mat & of course the projects you want to work on. Some people I've attended one with take an iron & ironing board, but for the most part-those are provided & if not someone else probably brought one. Whether you know anyone or not, you will meet new folks, always learn something new, get to see what others are making, etc. It's just fun & I've loved every one I've gotten to go to!!

I went to a retreat in Wisconsin, didn’t know anyone and it turned out great. The host made sure the “single” stitchers sewed at the same table. The shop that hosted the retreat rented machines to sew on. Single sleep room for me always! All meals provided. Look into the things you want and you will find a great retreat. Or like it was said gather your friends and have your own. Make it virtual if you don’t want to leave home!

For years I never understood paying to go somewhere to quilt when I can do it at home with no little ones around and a husband who loves to read. Then some friends talked me into a retreat. OH MY! Four of us started going to one in the fall our local shop organized. We now do several a year and love them. New friends, new ideas, and no distractions (like cooking, answering the phone, and those pesky weeds when I look out the window).

I don’t usually leave comments but I really related to this one. We moved to a new community right before Covid and I found your podcast as it started. I have enjoyed every one of them and learn so much. I have participated in Sherri’s BOM the last 3 years as well as other sew alongs I found on RUclips or blogs during the pandemic and it has been great fun to work on my skills and finish some old projects. However as a RN and previously having younger children, I have never been able to attend guild meetings or be active in a quilt community. A few months ago I changed jobs and no longer work the 12 hr shifts, went to a quilt guild meeting, and now joined the guild. So chelsi’s comments about meeting other quilters resonated with me! I have been so excited to meet other people who speak my language and share my passion! ❤️😊 Thank you for all you do, and thanks for stopping by every two weeks! See you soon❤️

I have started to go on 1-2 retreats a year. I do enjoy them, yes it is a pain to pack up but keep one tote with "extra items" that are always ready to go. Some are doubles I got after my Mom passed away so I have a little of her with me when I sew! It is nice to just sew and not worry about what to cook for dinner, remember to switch laundry out or cleaning that needs done. The retreats I've been on have little gifts of notions and small items to make. I also pack blocks to finish or projects that need finished in containers with all parts ready to go, then I don't have to think about anything but sewing! I have a few friends who go too. You always learn from others there and see different ways to do something or new gizmos or patterns. I always try to walk around the room to see what others are sewing and chat. Thanks for all your podcasts, I am happy that you started doing the videos of them so we can see your quilts, new fabrics and suggestions. I do love the extra end-of-month podcasts. It's nice that not everything is all quilting. I also enjoy Billy's views as a non-quilter. I can't believe it is #64 already. I do love listening to all of you!

When I first met my in laws in Massachusetts and my husband took me sight seeing there seemed to be an ice cream stand on every corner and wild raspberry ice cream seemed to be the thing. He loved it but I would not walk across the street to get it. You can all thank me and look at it as a gift from me - that means more for the all the rest of you.

I ended up rooming with the scrapbooking ladies. I don’t think there was anyone that didn’t have a great time. I got to learn more about my guild ladies. I met so many new friends that are so very talented! We laughed, played games, shared tools and techniques! I really wanted to stay longer.

I have lots of them, untouched, just looked at. The ones I did use, I felt I messed them up. I think part of my problem is I don't know exactly how to use them correctly so that I can find my notes and cross the with other area's of the planner, and I hate my penmanship... so I prefer to type out notes, and print them, but I have piles and piles of papers that I then punch holes in and put into binders... but again, they get lost and i can't seem to organize, projects, idea's, what I ordered and to whom or when and when theorders come in i forget which project it went to... things like that...

Lovely podcast today! Especially liked the book segment. So often podcasters recommend books and when I get them, I'm disappointed. But I have been following you ladies for a long time, am an avid quilter, and also have two degrees in English, so I feel kind of safe in taking your suggestions. Todays's list really sparked my interest, especially Joyful. I (we all) could use more joy in our lives. Hope you all have a great day. Billy you are so funny😄💫

Listener Question: Is there any way to know when a company such as Moda is getting ready to discontinue a fabric line? Quilters often say, "If you love the fabric, buy it." I try to be careful not to over purchase so I usually take some time to think about it rather than impulse buy. And often after I buy a fat quarter bundle or other precuts, I try to figure out what I'm going to make with it so that I can buy additional fabric if needed, while available. I love your podcast and really appreciate your kind and helpful nature. Thanks so much to all three of you!

Great book recommendations! I Miss You When I Blink is one of the few books to make me laugh out loud, though there were some essays that I found poignant as well. I, too, am reading Joyful and enjoying it. I am already looking around my home and thinking of ways to add more color. Now I know to add Bomb Shelter to my "to read" list. Thank you!

Love your book recommendations. Was watching just before my husband went to the library but they didn’t have the blink book. I also read multiple books at the same time but never more than two fiction. One physical and and a light one on Kindle.

When I first started quilting over 20 years ago, rotary blades lasted forever, same with sewing machine needles. Now they sell so called endurance blades, titanium needles at a premium price.

I love your podcast. I always listen, sometimes watch, but never comment, until today. Billy!?! You should put in your order for a fabric line not just a quilt. Hmm? The wheels are turning. Chelsi, what would be your inspiration? What colors would you use? Then Billy and Isabel could have their wedding quilt made from "their" line. Isabel, what do you think? Are you interested in decorating your future home with quilts? And I know Sherri will come up with the perfect names for the line and the quilt pattern(s). Since timing may be an issue in completing a new fabric line in time for the wedding, Billy and Isabel's first anniversary may be a better fit. I am so excited!!!! ☺🤵👰

I don’t have quilty friends and would not feel comfortable sleeping with others. Maybe if it is a classroom set up with hotel option I may go. I feel I would be wasting money that I could use for more batting or fabric. Good question! I always wondered what I am missing in the retreat area.

On the question about retreats: if this quilter was interested in joining a guild, often they offer retreats, sometimes even just a day two where you commute from home. This would provide an opportunity to meet other quilters before attending a retreat. (I love my guild 😊)

Didn’t know that was called a “Brain Dump.” I do that all the time. I use my note pad on my iPhone, and include the bubbles to check off each one as I go. I use this for shopping, travel, quilt project organizing…any little thing that I need help with. It’s very freeing to be able to refer to my list. And if it’s something my daughter needs to help with, I can message her a copy!!

Chelsi thanks so much for affirming my habit of buying cute journal books and planners. I look at them and don’t use them. However, I am getting up the nerve to use them. I’m always afraid of accidentally misspelling a word and “ruining” my planners. Lol
