Regarding consumer debt, I'd like to point out that you can pay off your consumer debt faster if you move abroad and have a lower cost of living. My friend was living in Los Angeles and her cost of living was around $6,000 a month. She moved to Mexico City and her cost of living went down to $2,000 a month, so she was saying $4,000 a month, which she used much of it to pay her consumer debt (around $30K) off much faster than had she stayed in the US while paying off debt, so that's something to think about!
I could have sworn that I mentioned this in the video but it's been a while. But it definitely depends on your income source. For instance, earning pesos in Mexico this would not have been possible for me.
Learned on October 2022 that Capital One does not handle international living abroad. No international VPN, nor foreign phone number. Also, in general, make sure you specify country you want to go to because that foreign country could be on the 'banned' list for that bank!!!
Great video! Unfortunately, we will move with debt or else we wouldn’t move for a long time. Creating a moving budget and sticking to a tight budget (with steady income flow) will allow us to pay all of our debt within a year (vs several years) by drastically cutting our expenses with the move abroad.
Yooooooo, this video is everything. I'm from California and about to move to Spain for a government job. All things I never would have thought about or known to do. Thank you
You are a GOD SEND! America has beaten me to the ground. I'm having to restart my life from scratch at 37 years old. I really don't want to be here. I'm tired of the racism. I'm tired of the greed. I'm not in position to leave today, I have to work myself out of a hole first. But you are providing me and others with so much hope and useful information! God bless you!
Watched from the future and per usual it has so many gems 💎 and very relatable. Thankful as I’m continuing on my journey to retire abroad in Mexico 🇲🇽 October 2025! 🙌🏾💯
This is such great information. I moved to Mexico as a DN,. I just messaged my sister and told her I'm going to give her all access to my money and do an FPA and POD. This is about the only thing I hadn't done before leaving. I do monitor my credit via Credit Wise and Credit Karma so haven't done a freeze. I find living in Mexico I still use my credit card and am still paying off one. But I'm not adding to my debt. Moving to Mexico has allowed me to pay off 5 of my 6 credit cards. 1 left and it should be paid down in the next year.
Great tips on opening brokerage accounts BEFORE leaving the US and having a financial power of attorney (while you're alive) to make sure your life insurance doesn't lapse and other things. Thanks.
Just recently heard about taxes collected from foreigners in Colombia. There are really important things to look for besides the affordable lifestyle offered in certain places.
I've seen you mention some shady practices you've seen on social media posts and things many people don't do when moving abroad. It'd be nice to see a video on that.
Picky Girl Travels the World, you deliver “Very Informative”, strategical, and safe, actionable steps of “Musts and To Do’s” for those of us, like myself, that are in the process of ‘Getting Out’ and traveling with as much ease and free will as possible. Very much appreciated. 🥰Thank You🥰
I love automated payments to make sure no payments are missed. And I love automated debits to make sure savings are going into the right buckets without me touchng it!
@@stawill7854I would say no. While they're accepted almost everywhere here (except Costco), a lot of businesses outside of the U.S.--especially local merchants--will not. I found that to be the case when I spent a semester in Mexico years ago. If you only want to carry one credit card abroad, I would also suggest Visa or Mastercard.
Thank you SO much for this video! I’m pretty financially illiterate and although I’ve been around expat forums for awhile, I haven’t made steps that I needed to handle. I’m kind of shocked how easy it was to open a brokerage account and I’ve got a list that I need to work through now

I had hoped that 5k , online tutoring and some housesitting would get us started. Oneday 🇲🇽 🇵🇹 🇫🇷
This is such an amazing video. I'm 20 years old and it's my dream to move to a foreign country. I've been looking for good financial advice on how to make my dream possible. Your videos are the best I've seen so far. Thanks for this video.
Adalia, thank you for this video. I watched it again. I currently live in New York City. My mom lives here and we are each other's beneficiary. My dearest friends I trust live in NJ and NY. These are both high tax states. I just don't know how I can change my domicile to FL or TX without living there. I may just have to pay NY taxes for a time. Once I leave the U.S, I never really want to return only to visit my mom and friends.
Texas is pretty easy to set up domicile. I'd be Florida is as well. Like something you could do a week or two before leaving the US. If I were you, I'd focus on how to end your domicile in NY. That may be the more difficult part.
Thank you Adalia! So many great points to dig into in this video. Also the podcast on Wills was excellent. We need to cover all bases to protect ourselves and loved ones.
@@AdaliaAborisade I'm from Los Angeles, California and my business is tied to this state, so I know that for me, there's no way around paying state taxes. Still in the early stages of research for pivoting my business so that I have local representation but can work from Mexico City. I work in intellectual property, so it's doable with a plan. You are the first person that I have come across that speaks about the realities of banking and taxes. So happy to have found you.
This was excellent - thorough and extremely helpful. Thank you, Adalia! One thing I would mention regarding the domicile state is that there may be other considerations for keeping it in a state that charges income tax - for instance, if someone is early retired and only draws from 401K some states have no tax for such withdrawals. So in my case I won't pay any income taxes since my income is just from IRA (rolled over 401K). Plus the state offers medicaid for adults so I can use that in case I travel back to US...
I am sure all of this information is on point because it was stressful to listen too. LOL! Good grief!!!! I mean WOWWW! I think we might simply travel - visit for months at best but not LIVE abroad- cause woah- too much - life is but so long. LOL! Again- great information though.

If your bank is a international bank; like a Bank of America does it matter, because my account in the USA with them, would be the same bank account in Spain with them right; right?
That has not been the case in my experience, branches in different countries are different entities. Besides you US account is in dollars a local Spanish account would be in Euros unless it is specifically a multi-currency account.
