My cousin actually got to show me this movie, along with "Triplets of Belleville," a while back, and I loved it. Both of these movies are fine examples of how a film can tell a story just through the visuals, even with bits of dialogue here and there.
I haven't seen this movie, but I find it interesting how, judging on the clips in this review, a grand majority of the character animations and interactions are shown from a distance, showing most or all of the characters' bodies in the shot, as if it's being presented as a stage play.
I'd remember the times when we had David Copperfield or the Masked Magician And there was also Siegfried & Roy they were all good back then until Roy got injoried from his own Tiger during a show in Los Vegas and would later retire along with Siegfied.
I quite enjoyed this movie; I've seen it twice, but I do hope to see it more. I like that the film has little dialogue, and how quiet the film is; it provides a nice calming atmosphere. Sure, the movie is a bit deep, but there are aspects I remember from it that make me want to come back to it :)
This makes sense if you think about it. Back in the 1920s -1940s, the era when vaudeville was popular, the people were faced with a global economic depression and a second world war, so it made sense that they would look to fantastical things like vaudeville to help them escape their bleak lives. Once the war was over, they didn't need the fantasy anymore. It makes you think, doesn't it?
I remember watching this a few years back. It was a pretty sad movie, but I love the artwork and how the movie didn't depend on words to tell the story
I love the music in the background when he reviews the story part, it’s very sad but calm Plus the review was great and I now I appreciate this film more than ever
I bawled my eyes out at the end of this movie. When the dedication image came up and we finally got to see what that little photo he was carrying the whole time was of, I just lost it. What a gut punch.
All the people in comments talking about next Open Season review... I'm here to say that the Illusionist is my all-time favourite French animated movie and one of overall favourites. One of its strongest points is Tati and Alice's hearfelt relationship and of course gorgeous traditional animation! its just so pleasant to look at! Very rarely movies let alone animated make me at least tear up, but after watching this unknown masterpiece I just wanted to let out and cry - thats how genuine and heartwarming the story was. I'm glad AniMat agrees with me, but i'd myself give it 10/10!
It sure is one of the most beautiful animated movies I've seen, plus the way the story is shown through character animation rather than just telling the audience what's happening. It's a shame you barely see this kind of hand drawn movies anymore.
Honestly I didn't even know this film exist, let alone the one in 2006, and yet it's still surprising this actually was made little bit recently. How did I not know about this til now?
I haven't seen or heard this movie but I have heard that this movie got nominated in 2011 for Best Animated Feature alongside Toy Story 3 and How to Train Your Dragon. This also marks the directorial debut of the same director who would later direct Ernest and Celestine. I should give this movie a watch!
I feel like Magicians are like Animators today. Especially when people just doesn't care or break the illusion. Wow! That movie do have a meaning of life, even with this review. Great review.
While I agree we don't see the old school magicians anymore, magic has evolved and people are creating new and interesting ways to keep the magic in the magic tricks. It's not how it was 50 years ago, but the wonder is still there
So Open Season is Next, out of all the movies made by Sony Pictures Animation that AniMat had talked about in the past, this is the one he rarely mentions when it comes to Sony Pictures Animation, is it's going to be interesting.

Great review! I often recommend this to people interested in animated films they've never seen, but always mention it can be a true downer at times. One thing that always rubbed me wrong was how much naivete Alice has in genuinely believing the magician is "Magic"; had this been a younger character, I would've bought it more, but by my guess, Alice is at least 18 (possibly 16) and far too old to be taken in by his simple tricks...........but that's a small complaint.I also love, which you didn't quite embellish on, is that this movie is largely also signifying the end of Childhood (or Innocence). All the supporting characters, like the Illusionist, are struggling, but their trades are acts largely influenced by how much they're loved by children (a clown, a dummy, aerobatic acts); we see that those trades are shed either by desire or by circumstance, but it's implying that things MUST change, or we fade and die living in the past. It's an amazing film, especially if seen in a double feature with TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE (if you gave no information about either, NO ONE would've guessed these were done by the same director).
It’s going to happen! AniMat is going to review Open Season! He’s reaching the milestone for reviewing all of the Sony animated films in theaters until Spider-Man arrives!
8:14 Why is that rabbit eating sausages....unless that's no ordinary rabbit.... is it that beast from Caerbannog!!!?? Maybe the sausages are vegetarian.
I'm not a fan of Open Season myself but in Joeys reveiw of Cloudy 2, Mat promised he would say something nice about Open Season. He better not break his promise
powerpup97 If you have seen his Top 10 Underrated Animated Films, he gave indie films an Honorable Mention. All though not all indie films are amazing.
ESQUARE Or 3 in row we got the AniMat Seal of Approval. A similar thing happened in 2014 when we got 2 Seals of Approval with Batman and The Thief & the Cobbler.
I would say this next one is definitely one of their better films. It has a bit of heart, some of the humor is decent, but is also somewhat generic. Some aspects of the animation also have not aged very well, so I’m guessing a 5/10. Maybe 6.
If AniMat can review foreign films like this one I'd like to see him take on the Croatian animated film Lapitch the Little Shoemaker which features a mouse as the protagonist.
Can you review Bayonetta Bloody Fate? The movie's definitely amazing to watch. Just like the game, it stays true to its original story. If you havrn't played the games then I highly recommend it. The story's engaging, the graphics are stellar, and the characters are fantastic. But I do recommend reviewing Bloody Fate and playing the original games.
The next classic review of the first ever Sony Pictures Animation movie should go interesting. I'm not particularly a fan of Open Season. I actually kind of found it bland and dumb. However, I do imagine how the score for it could turn out sub-par compare to Surf's Up but also somewhat a far cry away from some of their worst features either. Don't get me started on those Open Season sequels...
Matthew Leisure You have to pledge $200 on Patreon if you want him to review Avatar: The Last Airbender since it's 61 episodes. Korra I'm not sure how many eps there are.

The director also worked on Ernest and Celestine. That film deserves more love.
Nyanpire The Cat as director? I don’t think so
Diegoraf Blasio He worked on it I think, not being the Director.
Sylvain Chomet didn’t direct Ernest and Celestine.
My cousin actually got to show me this movie, along with "Triplets of Belleville," a while back, and I loved it. Both of these movies are fine examples of how a film can tell a story just through the visuals, even with bits of dialogue here and there.

not sure what he's gonna think of it but i doubt he'll hate it too much

We’ve seen The worst of Norm of the North, The best of Kung Fu Panda, but now we go to the average side of the 3 bears.
I love this movie... The finale just break me in tears ):

I thought the first one was good, and second was really trying, but all the other ones are garbage.
Oh um okay i didn't expect him to review that movie
How much ya wanna bet he'll give it the AniMat Seal of Garbage?

@@TheMightyPika I also don't know what you're talking about, I just watched the film.
“Most melancholy animated movie ever” - ever see ‘Grave of the Fireflies’?
I wouldn't describe Grave of the Fireflies as melancholy. It's more an outright tragedy.
titovalasques oh don't get me started
That bit near the beginning where the music stopped and Animation just got it was hilarious. 😂
I actually met one of the animators on this film a few years ago. She specifically animated Alice, I believe.

I'm really gonna have to look into this movie, thank you for bringing this gem up
The city background reminds me, of all things, of the Madeline books.
The great&powerful trixie would love this
Sony's First Animated Film: Aw... S#%^! He's gonna rip that movie to pieces!
Kameron Biggs He said before he would say some good things about it, so maybe he won't.
Well, maybe not to pieces, as Surf's Up may have gotten his Seal of Approval. But he could have some criticisms with it.
IdeaBox9000 surfs up didn’t get the animat seal of approval.
Sorry. I was prepared for that response by saying "may have".
Probably. It won't end up as good as Surf's Up, but probably not as terrible as, say, The Emoji Movie or Smurfs either.
Open Season Is Next Yay
I see this movie before when I was rent a movie.
HE'S FINALLY DOING IT! HE'S FINALLY DOING IT! YES! OPEN SEASON!
It’s going to happen! AniMat is going to review Open Season! He’s reaching the milestone for reviewing all of the Sony animated films in theaters until Spider-Man arrives!
Very Belleville looking for sure
Oh boy, Open Season. I'll get the shields for Sony.
Plus i have seen ads for this movie on the Boston Globe when i was a sophmore
Finally Open Season
Last time I was this early the animated Popeye movie wasn't cancelled
Dayum. I never knew about this film until now, but it seems really good! I’m definitely gonna check it out sometime.
Well, that opening was fairly accurate. I wonder what Animat would think of Open Season
Could Open Season be giving the Seal of Garbage? Been a long while for a classic review to being giving that.
I remember being particularly gutted by the ventriloquist’s fate. Gorgeous, unaggressively melancholic film.
Say, how come your not on mt. coat and friends, and what happened to the Prince of Egypt reviw?
clowns and classic magicians are still around
Can't wait for the Open Season review.
I won't be surprised he will give it the AniMat's Seal of Garbage.
