yo thanks so much for real. i wish i had a better answer but i pretty much make it note for note by ear. i try to find a way to play the song so that there’s a full chord behind it and it’s comfortable to play. i take my time with it listening to one note/moment at a time but sometimes the cover fleshes itself out quickly. this one was quick. i feel like you can pretty much play any song on the acoustic guitar. i feel like there’s so many shapes and voicings that inevitably one of those shapes could work for covering the song. not everything is gonna work in it’s original key though. sometimes you’ll have to create your own tuning. i really love just doing songs in E or A because that way the whole guitar becomes accessible and it’s probably the best way for guitar players to work since we’re so familiar in it. when it comes to music theory and stuff btw i’m not good. i can’t remember shit about it. im a massive john mayer fan and he does excellent covers of stuff. he opened up my eyes to a whole other dimension of guitar playing. it’s a very 3D instrument with percussive elements whereas i looked at it very 2D most of my life. i feel like using ur thumb in certain bass notes can be really important in making a chord support itself whereas it would normally feel thin. i’m all about making the chords and guitar parts feel whole. it really just takes time to come up with a cover. go slow and use ur ears. “it’s all in the ears” i think that’s the quote. literally just go note by note through your favorite songs. there’s also a preliminary step to doing a cover that’s super important. not only do you have to absolutely love the song ur gonna do but there’s something you have to feel about a song. almost like a confirmation that you can cover it. i don’t labor too hard over figuring out if i can cover a song at all. if it starts to happen quickly then i work moment by moment through it. it takes a lot of faith. if i didn’t believe that there was a way to play a song that’s not played on just one instrument then i probably couldn’t play it. throughout all of music history no ones rly making shit up. everything that’s ever been done is constantly rehashed and evolving. music inhabits different people and comes out filtered through their personal experience. so like every song is just a melody pretty much. you have the music and the lyric melody. if you strip away all the other bs and try to look at it like that if gets a little more easy and basic. this is a lot of information sorry aha i tried!
