My dad (RIP) bought me this very bike, also in white, brand new from the Honda dealership in Beirut back in 1981 when I was only 16 years old. I went from being an invisible kid in high school to being the most popular one instantaneously. The hottest girls in my class were competing to go to the movies or parties with me on the weekend where before I couldn't even get the ugliest girl in school to give me a 2nd look. In fact, I got my 1st french kiss and lost my virginity because of this bike. Having a motorcycle in high school back then was the epitome of cool, akin to owning a Porsche or an M3 nowadays. Seeing this video brought back some of the fondest memories of my youth. It kick started a heart-wrenching nostalgia that's hard to get over. All that's missing is the soundtrack from Saturday Night Fever. Now I'm 56, old, tired and ugly, and the ugliest girl in town still won't give me a 2nd look if my life depended on it. I think I need to buy me a new motorcycle. Hmmm...
Super gemacht. Ich hatte dieselbe. Ein zuverlässiges Geschoss mit dem legendären 23er Vorderrad. Lief locker 160,wenn der Distanzring im Krümmer weggefräst wurde. Ist auch thermisch viel besser für den Motor. Die 6volt reichten leider kaum aus,um Nachts sicher zu fahren.... tolles Gerät. Hätte ich behalten sollen.

All the XL series are great little machines (of that era; 70s-80s). Now, the simple lines and functionality of the UJM Universal Japanese (dual sport) Motorcycle are largely gone or buried under angular plastic pieces and computerized, oil/water cooled engines. They look rather clownish.
Nice job. I'm working on a 1980 xl500s. Frame will be metallic blue, body work, lexus pearl white with blue pearl added. I see you helicoiled the valve cover bolts, my next step.
Wow, sehr schön restauriert. Bei mir steht das für nächsten Winter an. Die XL ist das einzige die noch übrig geblieben ist von meinem Moppeds. Hast Du einen Umbau von 6V auf 12V erwogen?
Nochwas: es gab und gibt kein Bike ,dass besser für ein Wheelie geeignet ist,als die 500s. 2 bis 3km kein Problem ausser dass ich 3x den Zylinder hohnen musste,weil die Ölpumpe beim Wheelie kein Öl aus dem Sumpf holte. Als es dann keinen Übermasskolben mehr gab,musste ich sogar eine neue Laufbahn einpressen lassen. Das war damals sauteuer..... 😇
+Andreas Heine Finde es gut dass sich auch noch welche aus meiner Gegend für diese tollen Motorräder interessiert. Ich habe meine xl leider Ende letzten Jahres verkauft, hatte sie mit 13. jahren gekauft und mit 14. verkauft ( es wahr eine Fehlentscheidung ich hätte sie behalten sollen)
Bought a new red XL-500 when I was 17 in 1979. I remember getting it home and just sitting looking at it feeling so proud.
I got 73 xl 70 in 1982 , you did better mind you it gave me freedom
