How to Install a Security Alarm System | This Old House
/ thisoldhouse
Look at our amazing interior wall alarm component that's installed before we paint. And wait, let's install a brand new camera on a soffit that is already half rotten!
Good to see Scott again
Wow that was INCREDIBLY thorough...
Wait how do I install a security system??
There should be a different video, the other one is a DIY one and it's a do it yourself kit
Best security system is move out of that area.....If you see storm doors with bars on them you know you've picked the wrong neighborhood.
The only hood with no bars on the windows and no worries is Mayberry with Floyd the barber, aunt bee,Barney, goober, Andy and opie.
True.
I have two German Shepherds and a Benelli works perfectly for security system
Are your German shepherds immortal ?
@@oks1989😂
@ 1:09 Look at that!!! It snapped a picture of different clothes...… Wow look at that!!!
That’s exactly what I said, different color sweater. WOW
The hd quality is not really that good
Seems a bit misguided. If you already have wired sensors that work you can upgrade the panel to add the smart home integration features, cellular backup, etc. Less batteries is always a good thing.
National weather service
More wires more problems and false alarms bro….. when those wires go bad your gonna get a wireless replacement anyways…. These days wireless is way better and batteries can last up to 10 years
Yes if you have a wired alarm system update the control panel to smart and also a louder bell box outside. Also have vibration sensors on doors and windows therefore the alarm is activated before the intruder enters the home these clowns going on about wireless alarms they are easier to jam the signals.
The automatic disarm on door unlock is a bad idea. If someone forces you into your home, you’ve just given up any chance of someone being notified as your system disarmed itself.
Yeah, no duress mechanism. Also the issue with these types of systems where they are all integrated into the keypad.. All a burglar needs to do is destroy that keypad when they enter and they've disabled the entire system. Much better to have a system where the control board is located somewhere that takes time to get to (utility room).
@@bmanwpg This system is powered by Alarm.com which features anti "Crash and Smash" by ensuring an alert will be sent even if the alarm system is destroyed. www.alarm.com/blog/crash-smash-security
@@bmanwpg That's not good for the occupants of the house either. There's only a 30 second delay.
If someone forces you to disarm your alarm, same thing happens. Don't see much of a difference.
I really like the segments with Scott Caron 👍
What about his replacement Heath?
@@juliof970 I REALLY like the segments with Scott Caron
@@TomTowles I liked his videos too. Wonder why they replaced him with that no energy mannequin.
I like Scott because he had a lot of great segments like the electric vehicle Charger episode
What video was that
What installation they teach you??
How to pay someone else.
none of these "how to install" videos ever show you how to actually install it

Its refreshing to see all the hate on this video
This video brought to you by the year 2006
Could tell us what brand and model of this alarm where can I buy it please?
Not worry about it. I have 2 German Shepherd dogs and Luger .45 ACP and 3" shell 12 gauge buckshot
love this old house
Plungers suck because they stick closed in winter or just after time. Surface mount contacts are better, and easier to change batteries. That system is obsolete now. INTERLOGIX is not making the Simon system anymore or any system for that matter. Go DSC, 2gig, or Qolsys
Dsc is qolsys which was owned by tyco but now is johnson controls….. blah blah these companies keep buying each other out
Congratulations, you installed a Simon XTi to replace a Simon Xt
For people who wants to know the name of the alarm the name of it is the Simon Xti
My 2 friends guard my house......Smith & Wesson
What's up with the walls in that house?
Well the ceiling I would hope
You need to do a series on easy home energy efficiency products.
There is a climate crisis. We all need to do more to reduce fossil fuels use.
They have. Watch the older videos.
Let’s put a high end security system on a house that needs to be fixed up.
Kasperski, like the antivirus??
That did not show us normal people how to install anything..That was just a promo video to pitch a home security software video. What the heck this old house??
That kwikset can be picked in seconds, disabling the whole alarm system... brilliant...
it only works by entering the code
The noise was not one that would travel far. Some car alarms are louder.
nice
@@Kevin-mp5of nice nobody will break in
@@brianglade848 why not?

I already have a reliable alarm system: my big bad German Shepherd.
@@Kevin-mp5of Not mine, he can disable the glock!
what brand is this security system
The is a ge simion xt I think but it’s at least made by ge
Its made by GE/interlogix which is out of business
The camera is Avigilon which is not something typically used in homes. I thought it was a little weird to see that here.
👌
Lol they replaced a GE Simon XT with a GE Simon XTI
Wow bro i was scrolling threw comments waiting to see who would pick up on that….. ive been installing alarms for 25 years and laughed when he said heres the new latest and greatest system😂😂
@@darrenmadden7137 like bruh they were better off with a 2gig
@@rztndiii lol 2gig…… what a joke of a system 2 guys in a garage give me a break

It still baffles me....we can take clear and detailed photos of Saturn and Jupiter, but we can t make better cameras for security systems. 🤦♂️
I myself have given this some thought(somewhat of a techy nerd myself) whether its my back up camera for my car or something like you just said for this application and on the contrary they make some incredible cameras nowadays and have been for quite a few years now that literally fit into our thin as hell smartphones so its not so much that they cant make better cameras cause we very much do have them its just companies like to cheap out and not use the good ones to make more profit
@@Manny-117 I agree to an extent bec of one thing cost
Ima stick with my SimpliSafe system that’s e had for 2 years
that garbage?

Adt is louder lol what is that goofy ahh bird alarm the adt system is EEEEEEEEEEEEE3EEEEEEEEEEE as the alarm
I learned nothing
I learned this alarm system is a JOKE of a security system...
it's a shitty alarm system with cheap cameras. scott is back?
Wireless technology, there is nothing to cut, just use a jammer and it's out!
@@briancnc Yes but if there's signal jamming they can't work at all, fault or not, they won't be able to make phone calls or to connect to the server or whatever they do in this case
If a thief wants to break into your home that badly nothing short of a shotgun will stop them. These are designed for your average thug looking for a quick buck. They won't have jammers...
This is a thieve's house who is trying to protect what he has stolen in his home.

Get a big dog and own guns
yeah i like shooting the owners dog with his own guns
@@TheDementation An alarm system is not as good of an option for protection theb a large dog to alert the owners and a gun to defend yourself with. Crooks dobt fear alarms, they fear getting biten by a large dog and shot by their owners. Cops take 10plus mins to show up and thats 5 mins after the alarm company calls them. Alarm systems are a feel good idea and not actual security
