Alex Smith was great in 2018 for the then Washington Redskins. 6-3 is a fantastic record when facing Prime 10-6 Cowboys, and 9-7 post Superbowl Eagles. Only 1 of the other QBs Washington used that year was of NFL level play, Colt McCoy. Then He went down with a broken leg. Washington then had to use Mark Sanchez, who sucked, and then used Josh Johnson, who was OK at best. If Alex Smith doesn't get injured in 2018, they go to the playoffs.

When Alex Smith retires I think that the NFL should officially name the "comeback player of the year" award after him.
Not only did he came back on an NFL roster (kudos to Washington for not releasing him, BTW) and played in competitive games , but he also reclaimed the number one QB spot and led his team efficiently, taking the opportunity offered by a weak division to get his team into the playoffs.
Washington will probably be one and done, but the fact that Smith could get back to the level of a decent starting NFL QB is absolutely IN-CRE-DI-BLE.

The 49ers are big rivals but the Rams sucked that year, so 49ers players were really cocky and acted like the Rams players and the fans weren't shit. Alex Smith though was the only player I respected on that team, he was cool and respectful and I saw him have actual conversations with Rams players and didn't showboat in front of the whole crowd after he whooped our ass. Smith deserves Comeback Player of the Century. Seriously, I don't recall anyone ever coming back from an injury like that, let alone possible death.
I wish nothing but the best for him. He's not the best quarterback, sure, but he's been a lot better than many quarterbacks who have taken the field during his career, and I think he's had some raw deals (including playing for Washington). I hope he finds success in another organization that can both appreciate him and take care of him. If he can come back from that, I think he's got a lot left in the tank.

I've always dealt with weight issues ever since I was little and always told myself that because of those issues I'd never be able to live out my childhood dream of becoming a pro wrestler. Alex Smith inspires me to go for it. If this man can go through all that and still manage to take the field, then I know I can overcome my struggles. God bless you Alex and God bless the Redskins/Washington!

Not only did he conquer a great deal of adversity with his injury, he returned play at the highest level and earn the starting QB spot. Truly amazing , anything short of renaming the award to the “Alex Smith Comeback Player of The Year Award” doesn’t do this man justice.

I never been more impressed with someone . When i seen that doc on what happened to his leg after the operation and he said he would play again i was blown away .
And we know the flesh eating bacteria came from the hospital not the field .
If you haven't seen the doc , watch it . He had no leg left , he had about a inch thick of calf and that's it .
Walking again is amazing , running and playing is unreal .

Seeing the leg injury outcome sustained by Smith recalls an equally devastating leg injury sustained by Joe Theismann (QB) of another (yet the same) NFL Washington Team of decades past. Alex Smith inspires many by his displayed determination for accomplishment in athletic excellence. Rock on!

OMG, astonishing, unbelievable human being. It inspires me after having had surgeries and find myself by myself rehabbing and remembering my football days more than 40 years ago, using those exercises like bear crawl, crab walk, climbing stairs, pushing myself. At times I wanted to sulk but after watching this great video about a great man, I have fresh inspiration. Really, thank you so very much!!!

Smith should of just got cpoty when he made the 53 man roster. The fact he played and had Aaron Donald on his back testing the strength of his leg made me winch in pain. Hope everything goes well for him and Dak also 🙏 🙏🙏

This is the greatest comeback story in football. He overcame everything, even nearly dying, just to make it back on the field.. Tbh I think the CPoTY should be called the Alex Smith CPoTY award.

i teared up when he was in the snap, knowing the pain he must have gone through just to play another snap of football. what a legend most people can't do that, hell almost no one in the league could do that so that would basically be a superbowl title to him and his family. btw im not a redskins fan i've been a chiefs fan i'm not a bandwagon but when i saw that i really did feel bad for him.

Alex Smith truly is a tough man. My dad survived Necrotizing Faciatus once but, it claimed his life the second time. It's scary and something that totally destroys from the inside out. Good job Alex, I've always liked you. Go throw some touchdowns in honor of my dad, and other people that fought the same things but couldn't over come it.

Hope he manages to play at least some of the snaps this weekend (Wildcard weekend vs. the Bucs). Dude didn't just come back to throw a few balls in a bad loss and say "Look, I did it"; he reclaimed his spot as the starter and helped his team win some key games down the stretch. Guy deserves to see some playoff action to cap off this incredible story.
