CrowdStrike outage: Airlines, banks and hospitals impacted worldwide by faulty Microsoft update

- Опубликовано: 10 дек 2024
- A global IT outage grounded flights, knocked banks and hospital systems offline and media outlets off air on Friday in a massive disruption that affected companies and services around the world and highlighted dependence on software from a handful of providers.
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack - and that a fix was on the way. The company said the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows.
Carmi Levi joins Global News Morning with the latest breakdown of what went wrong as businesses around the world have their digital services go dark.

Love it when the reporter gets the context soo wrong! It’s not a Microsoft outage, it’s a Cloudstrike outage. But using Microsoft as the title gets more traction! Windows systems that use cloudstrike are affected! But that’s not all windows systems! And it’s not Microsoft’s to fix!
@@klassikality uhhh what? Proof?
Wasn't it faulty Microsoft software?
@@rick3461 it was not. It's a Crowdstrike software issue. They rolled out a poorly tested update. It runs on many large corporations' PCs as security software. The software glitch prevented Windows from booting the system.
@@rick3461no, Crowdstrike is a 3rd party that pushed a faulty update
Love it when the person correcting the reporter *also* gets it wrong.
It's CROWDSTRIKE, not "cloudstrike."
And they want us to except digital currency,, these people are hilarious
My understanding is that they actually want us to accept it. I haven't heard anything yet about them wanting us to except it in any way.

The problem is with a recent crowd strike update not a Microsoft update like the title says.
I was in IT for many years and saw the dependence people had on their computers to work. I informed the people at the top but they couldn't understand so I was wrong. Too many at the top won't listen to how vulnerable they are. Too many depend on their phone to tell them what to do. Lose your phone and you lose your life?
I think your word need a little clarification by empasizing people who were relying on internet and cloud services is the vulnerable one. But I can see through what you're saying.
My android tablet with their operating system from 2013 aka android 4.4 getting cut out their app support since 2020. So does the web browser. I'm quite shocked of the façade they're making. The website look simple and minimalistic, yet it made the old browser engine struggle to load a simple Ui with 4 flashcard like news site where 10 years ago the same UI can be rendered 😵. Rendering what a still perfectly functional operating system "Obsolete" by definition of it's crippled web capacibilities. But I am not by definition addicted to internet, I download everything I could. Thanks to Modern affordable high capacity Thumb drive. now used it as pdf/ebook viewer
The issue is not depending on the computer to work. The issue is lack of resilience and failure proofing. It's possible to make things truly high availability, made a career of it at one point. But it takes management trusting the people they hired instead of the lies the sales rep keep spewing and that's a losing battle, so I got out.

@@Lori.ReturnToFreedom Used to happen ALL THE TIME. Because of course the sales reps claiming "nothing can go wrong" is believed by management. Cash is KING!
Why does one company have so much control over so much! WEF, Blackrock etc. Investigate that?
WHY are our systems so vulnerable that if there's a disruption in one company, so many things go down within a whole continent? That's just crazy. It's is a recipe for a major disaster that's most likely just around the corner. Too many vital services depend on one internet company.
Reply
Lol did you even watch? Many companies use microsoft software. It's not an internet issue at all.
Automatic updates are to blame here. Normally, I'd attribute it to complacency, but these days Microsoft isn't really giving folks the option to update manually.
@@matthewsukkau382 That is the biggest reason I run Linux
Most of the Internet infrastructure runs on Linux (90%), there is NOT a problem, servers and desktops running Windows are and always will be problems with this crappy OS. The world should move to Linux, its free, reliable and secure.
@Dave-gy5mv It's a message, you depend on them.
IT professionals working with these companies are supposed to test updates before allowing the clients to update. This is equally the fault of the companies who are affected.
It's not. Crowdstrike pushes updates live, there's no option to manually approve local updates or have an out of date version running unless you're offline.
From what I can glean from various discussiobs, the update was pushed to N-1 and N-2 environments concurrently with those tracking latest.
I wonder how much Crowd strike will have to pay out in damages.
Might really be a cyber attack....we've had a few strange outages this year but it's been largely hushed.
And they wanna make a digital dollar yeah no thanks
It's not a "Microsoft" outage, it's a "CrowdStrike" outage. People not using CrowdStrike aren't affected unless they are downstream of systems that DO use it (ie: using cloud services where necessary servers are running Windows for some reason). Clickbait headlines have no place in competent, ethical news reporting. But then again, relying on a single vendor for so much (Microsoft, CrowdStrike) is also a stupid choice if you're interested in resilient and fail-proof systems, so what can we do? Glad I got out of IT, the suits are making bigger and bigger stupid decisions.
CloudStrike is also availble for Linux and MacOS so nothing is immune. Just easier to play the Microsoft card.
@@gerritvisser Mac and Linux users are unaffected
god there's so many stupid replies in this thread. 'just have a backup' like that even applies here.
@@gerritvisserThere appears to have been a similar issue for Linux deployments using kernel drivers instead of eBPF earlier in the year. eBPF and MacOS versions do not run custom kernel-mode driver code, which is what contributed significantly to making this outage so catastrophic.
Most of Microsoft's online services use it (teams, for example).
Cant believe there is no backup. So the whole internet is reliant on one company now.
They should just download more RAM to make it work.
backup of what??? What one company is it reliant on? This only affected people who ran Crowdstrike on Windows.

Oh look Alex Jones was right again
So it's a cyberattack
This sounds like the last thing you would expect from a cyber security contractor. If this was the fault of a person instead of software, they would either be fired or demoted into obscurity. Other reputable cyber security firms should be sending in their proposals to take over these contracts.
It's a bidding war for taxpayer money.
100% the fault of management. They refused to implement systems and checks that would have prevented this. Based on sad experience it was probably in search of a higher short-term share price because it's important to create "shareholder value" in the next 3 months. Long term viability is too often left in the ditch. Sadly, they'll probably find a tech to blame (as you have demanded) who will be fired, and the shoddy practices will continue.
@@driftwolf I have not demanded any such thing. I was using the gross incompetence of a person and the consequences they would face as an analogy for this software company and potential consequences for it glitching in such a widespread and far-reaching manner.
In other words, I was suggesting that other cyber security firms who have equal or better services to offer, should put in a bid to be the digital security for these various industries.
Furthermore, since when is offering a hypothetical situation considered a "demand"?
Please do not mischaracterize or misrepresent my comments.
It ain't just a "Counter Strike", it's also a "Crowd Strike".
There was a bad software update? and this should be acceptable? was this their first time to update that they didn't know the protocal? it was not tested as it should have been? what a joke!!!! if what u say is true they should be held accountable!!!! am sorry that we should rely on these companies!!!

Very, very concerning! It is always wise to be prepared for all sorts of emergencies including something like this especially if you are completely dependent on the digital world.
Just boot in safe mode and delete the update patch.
It should be mandatory that companies who control public companies that have an impact on the general public's day to day living [Banks, Phone,Transport and Information etc] to have a back up system, it appears by this fiasco there does not. Well, let’s look at this reasonably and logically, this IT outage isn’t as bad as… if all of the toilets worldwide were malfunctioning
I hope you're going to issue a retraction because this was NOT a Microsoft outage or problem. Any half baked reporter that spent more than 2 minutes looking at ANY tech news site, or even tech person on any social platform would have know this immediately!
these days most of the services runs as software as services , which means they have a way to fallback to the earlier rollout version of the service, wondering what's stopping 'Crowd Strike' to fallback
Because the computer doesn't even boot - so you would have to first manually boot the computer to a preinstall environment, whether it be WinPE or Linux or whatever, and delete the bad filter file. If you have thousands of computers, imagine how long that would take... brutal.
